Thembi Ngubane was a young woman who became famous through the American National Public Radio show Thembi’s AIDS Diary: A Year in the Life of a South African Teenager.. She was vibrant, punchy, and full of life. She recorded the consultation when, as a doctor, I started her on antiretroviral therapy in 2005. Jo Menell’s documentary film, Thembi, gives a sensitive and nuanced account of her fast rise to fame, culminating in meeting Barack Obama and addressing the US Congress, and then equally rapid fall into oblivion, loss from care, and death.

Since the October 2017 attacks by alleged Islamist insurgents- commonly referred to as Ahlu Sunnah Wa-al-Jama and locally know as Al Shabab- on Mocimboa da Praia, it has not been entirely clear who the attackers were, what their strategic objectives are, and on whose domestic and international support they rely. Today, almost everyone is aware of who these people are: the disgruntled youth of Cabo Delgado, who are demanding a slice of the resources that are found in abundance in their region. This paper, grounded in a historical understanding of conflict in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, seeks to identify possible stakeholders and scenarios in what we no longer see as an insurgency, but a war. This study will also seek to highlight the drivers of the conflict in Cabo Delgado, and attempt to answer the following questions: what does a peaceful intervention by the African Union (AU) look like? what must it avoid as a block to achieve normalisation and stability?

WHAT DOES PRESCRIPTION MEAN?
Prescription is when a debt arising from a cause of action is extinguished after a determined period of time has elapsed. It is regulated by the Prescription Act 68 of 1969 and starts to run on the day that the debt becomes legally due to be paid. The general prescription period applicable in most cases run for a period of three years.
The prescription periods in relation to Road Accident Fund matters differ somewhat to the general three year prescription period.
It should be noted that in certain circumstances prescription can be delayed or interrupted.

Health/social conversations – New breast cancer movement stresses the importance of early detection through regular screening
Breast cancer is the most common cancer type amongst women in South Africa and a lack of regular screening through mammograms and breast sonars are adding to the already heavy burden. Radiology Group, Keystone Radiology, says that they have launched a national campaign, urging women of all ages to prioritise their health by committing to annual breast cancer screenings. Dr Nikoli van Zyl says the Screen Her Save Her movement is based on the premise that early detection through screening is critical.

‘We have officially launched the Screen Her Save Her campaign, aimed at encouraging women to commit to annual breast cancer screenings. We know that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers amongst women and almost 1 in every 25 women are likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime. Early detection could easily become the determining factor when dealing with a life-threatening disease,’ she says.

Dr Van Zyl says despite the numerous awareness campaigns around the disease, the majority of women in South Africa are still uninformed about the necessity for regular screening. Screening can be done via self-examination, Mammography and ultrasound – which remain the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer.

There are 50 million children under the age of 15 living with asthma in sub-Saharan Africa; most of them are reportedly in South Africa. For parents or caregivers of these children managing the illness can be complicated and stressful. Added to that, new information suggests that asthma treatment needs urgent re-examining, leaving parents with questions about the dangers of being over reliant on reliever pumps.
Doctor Marlin McKay, a GP at the Goldman Medical Centre in Johannesburg explains, “When children are diagnosed with the respiratory disease, they are normally prescribed with two different types of inhalers, a maintenance inhaler and a symptom relieving inhaler. 2,3 Findings show that patients with asthma - not precluding children, will frequently underuse the maintenance inhaler which contains an anti-inflammatory therapy, and instead, over-rely on the symptom reliever inhaler. It is usually blue in colour and contains an item which opens up the airways known as short-acting beta2 agonists (SABA) therefore providing rapid and temporary relief for children. The problem with this approach is it can mask the worsening of symptoms and actually increases their risk of asthma attacks.”4-7
