  • 275: TOP 5 SONGS ABOUT DRIVING / OLIVIA RODRIGO REVIEW
Rev your engines and so forth as NO ENCORE gets behind the wheel and tears down a musical motorway in search of the very best songs about putting the pedal to the metal. All that and a truckload of teenage angst on this week's album review.

  • NO POPCORN #035 | SOUND OF METAL (2020)
Dave Hanratty, Norma Howard and David Higgins return with another music-related film review as they dive into Darius Marder's critically-acclaimed Sound of Metal. A recent streaming release for Irish viewers, it tells the story of a noise-metal drummer who begins to rapidly lose his hearing and his subsequent attempts to manage the situation.

Is this an authentic portrayal of Deaf culture? Does the casting reflect that? What about the sound design? How are the performances? And is Ruben's band any good or not? All that and more discussed on a new NO POPCORN.

ACT ONE: What We've Been Watching including Dave's descent into one-star Netflix-approved hell.

On the agenda this week – lots of news including a shock nu metal return (turns out we're not done with it, sorry), the third album from rock enthusiasts Royal Blood and a Top 5 that celebrates and commiserates some of the most interesting musical duos in history.

ACT ONE (3:15): News! Wicked Wisdom reborn, Billie Eilish makes a statement, gigs are back... kind of, Ed Sheeran gives back, and what are U2 doing now?

ACT TWO (26:50): Simultaneously really popular and quite forgettable arena-fillers Royal Blood return with Typhoons, an album Dave reckons he listened to over 20 times this week. Does that mean it's good, though?

NO ENCORE's music x movies side hustle returns with a rather revered turn-of-the-century affair; the John Cusack-fronted hipster relationship dramedy that is High Fidelity.

Is lovesick protagonist Rob Gordon charming or toxic? How much Jack Black can one film handle? Is this the best Catherine Zeta-Jones performance on record? How are the tunes? Does the fourth-wall breaking structure work? And more!

ACT ONE: A special Oscars-themed edition of What We've Been Watching shines a light on Nomadland, Another Round, Minari, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and other such Academy Award alumni. Oh, and the new Mortal Kombat reboot.
