May 15, 2023 No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 30
Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we spend some time talking about Moms, psychedelics, taking psychedelics with your Mom, and what it is we think a psychedelic is actually 'doing' when we take it. This one is a twisted road of conversation that finally has all of us arrive at the destination together.

We start this week with Mel talking all about the healing journey she's been on lately with her Mom and how she's witnessed some pretty remarkable transformation in her over the last week-and-a-half. Then, the question is posed, "what do you think a psychedelic is doing when you ingest it?" Each of us gives our thoughts and the different perspectives seem to merge into an actual coherent idea.

May 12, 2023Andy Frasco - Back On The Couch
We're super stoked to have the one and only Andy Frasco back on No Simple Road as our guest this week! If you don't already know who Andy Frasco is you probably have been living under a rock. He's been constantly touring with his band Andy Frasco & The U.N. and performing at all the major festivals, well known venues, and bringing his own brand of chaotic fun to folks all over the world! There's no show like a Andy Frasco & The U.N. show, that's for sure.

Andy's back in the studio this week with the NSR crew for another therapy session. We've become Andy's Portland therapists and we dig right into it talking about:
How he hates birthday attention.
Why he feels that it's time to actually start taking care of himself.
The reasons it's not smart to do Ketamine in public.
How he has the ability to say no (believe it or not).
How his mental demons materialize.
His most recent experience with heartbreak.
Why we think he needs an emotional support mini Doberman.
How he's seen different ways of living traveling the world.
IIf there's a point when he thinks he's made it.
What his 'rock bottom' looked like.
... and so much more!

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we've got a special guest in the studio in honor of Mother's Day month... Mel's Mom Sussie (aka Wayla) joins us!

This one is filled with a ton of laughter, some serious real talk, and maybe even some tears. We talk about growing up as a kid of a single mother, raising kids on your own, what Wayla thought when she found out Mel was marrying a broke, homeless, drug addict. How not having a stable upbringing caused Mel and Aaron to create firm foundations for their kids. What Wayla thinks of the No Simple Road Family, and a whole lot more!

May 05, 2023Jake Brownstein of Eggy - Right From The Start
We are extremely excited to have Jake Brownstein of Eggy as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Song by timeless song Eggy reaches out a hand, inviting you along as a great story unfolds. Eggy’s music traces the full spectrum of emotions evoked by a life well-lived alongside friends well-loved.

Jake joined us here in the NSR studio on their stop here in Portland to hang out with us a little bit and have an extremely heartfelt conversation about:
The ways in which our musical community responds from town to town and state to state across the country.
What it was about playing music that drove Jake from an early age to want to do it for a living.
If playing is more of an emotional outlet for him or a place to find his own unique voice.
Why he decided to learn to play pedal steel guitar, the musical equivalent of flying a spaceship.
The way in which his own unique style of learning has benefited him in life.
How he keeps his mental space on point with so much happening so fast and with so much going on.
The importance of having solid friendships, family, and partner support while sacrificing for a dream.
Eggy's plans of recording their new album with James Petralli of White Denim.
... and much, much more!

Head over to www.eggymusic.com for tour info, mech, videos, music and more!

May 02, 2023 No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 28
Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we've got a player absent! Apple is still stuck in Fresno so Mel and Aaron take the wheel and talk about the last couple of week's transformational experiences and what the catalysts have been for each of them. Aaron takes us through his recent decision to begin a personal meditation practice and his hesitancy to seek instruction when it comes to anything remotely spiritual. Then, they spend some time talking about the recent trip to Skull & Roses and Mel shares what insight she gained amidst the chaos of backstage. And finally, they recap Phish at The Hollywood Bowl and what it was like to have their Daughter with them for her first Phish experience.

April 28, 2023Luke Black & Drury Anderson of The Mountain Grass Unit - Keeping The Fire Going
We're stoked this week to have Luke Black and Drury Anderson of The Mountain Grass Unit as our guests on No Simple Road! The Mountain Grass Unit consists of three Birmingham pickers, Drury Anderson (mandolin and vocals), Luke Black (acoustic guitar and banjo), and Sam Wilson (upright bass). With the addition of Luke Black and Sam Wilson on harmonies, The Mountain Grass Unit has established the firm foundation to take on not only the vocal harmonies of traditional bluegrass tunes, but also the freedom to adapt songs from various genres to an all-acoustic format. Aside from their original songs, all three are equally comfortable restyling a Tony Rice number, a classic Grateful Dead tune, or covering contemporary acoustic masters like Billy Strings. The youthful exuberance and energy they bring to the stage is always remarkable.

We talk with the guys about:
Their experience attending Berklee College Of Music.
How they have explored and developed their vocal chops.
The was they got Sam to join the band and play the upright bass.
How rap rhythms influence their sound.
If they are feeling the wave of momentum behind them and how it is affecting their world.
How they came to learn about Jamgrass and the way the community has taken them in.
Where they see themselves fitting into the wider tapestry of the musical community,
How they deal with playing for rowdy crowds.
Some of the kindness and love they've found on the road.
... and much, much more!

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind the three of us recap the beginning of Phish's Spring Tour up in Seattle, Washington. We share our favorite moments of the run, our favorite songs, and get into a conversation around 'the crew' and the significance that holds. Each crew in the arena is having a similar life-changing experience that comes together through the conduit of the music. How is that affecting us? What do we do with it once the show ends?

April 21, 2023Megan Glionna of HF Pod - Pheminine View
We are super stoked this week to have Megan Glionna of the Helping Friendly Podcast as our guest on No Simple Road. Megan is a podcaster, writer, actress, and long time music fan who brings her decidedly feminine viewpoint to HF Pod and is co-host of the newly created podcast 'Things Of Gold' which surrounds the band Snarky Puppy.

We get right down to it with Megan talking about:
The unique way she got the spot co-hosting HF Pod.
Her journey to live in NYC and trying her hand in the acting world.
The way that her female perspective changes the feel of HF Pod.
How by being a part of a Phish podcast her connection to the music has deepened and changed.
What her first Phish experience was like.
Why it is so important to make sure our cup is full before trying to be there for others.
The reason she thinks MSG is he ultimate Phish venue experience.
Trey's uncanny ability to tap directly into emotion.
How she has learned to balance going to shows, podcasting, and having a family.
If she feels like going to shows feels more like work than fun now that she is working on HF Pod.
... and much, much more!
