No Simple Road

We are so excited this week to have Parrish Gabriel and Matthew Rennick of Sicard Hollow joining us on No SImple Road!

Nashville’s psychedelic punk-grass rockers, Sicard Hollow, grew up sick of any existing institution telling them who and what to be. Now, as they navigate adulthood, they’re equally tired of the music institutions telling them what their music should sound like—so they dunked it in patchouli and a skate-and-destroy ethos that brings an enduring sound into the modern age.

Before the band met in 2018, none of the members ever considered playing bluegrass. Matt Rennick (violin) was working on electronic music, Will Herrin (mandolin/vocals) was playing guitar in rock bands, and Alex King (guitar/vocals) was barely playing music at all. After a few jam sessions, the bluegrass just kind of happened. Since adding Parrish Gabriel (bass) in the Fall of 2019, the band has been on a journey of self discovery within the genre while challenging themselves to make it their own.

We talk with Matt and Parrish about coping with the realities of being on the road, the importance of having a network of friends and family that you can rely on when not touring, how it feels to actually be breaking genre molds with your music, Matt's side project 'Magec' and his personal struggles with mental health and what he's doing to keep his head on straight, Parrish's love of driving, and a whole lot more!

Check out www.sicardhollow.com for all their tour info, merch, news, and more!

We are super excited this week to. have Erik Yates of Hot Buttered Rum as our guest on No Simple Road. Erik spent his Bay Area youth trying nearly every instrument and style he came across. Piano lessons, saxophone quartets, garage bands and folk songs had all weaseled their way into his life by the time he hit high school. College in Portland, OR, where he studied music and writing, brought new musical horizons, new conspirators (including classmate Nat Keefe) and a new project, Hot Buttered Rum, which would soon take over his life.

We sit down with Erik to talk about his experience going to school in Western Oregon and the Bluegrass scene there, why, to him, bluegrass feels like the most honest music to play, how and why Hot Buttered Rum got their start, the ways in which playing music overlaps with ones personality, how the new album 'Shine All Night' came into being, how it feels to have your music released into the world for people to experience, and much more!

For tour info, merch, music, and more, head over to: www.hotbutteredrum.net

Make sure to check out the new album 'Shine All Night' everywhere you stream your tunes!
