No Simple Road

This week we have something special for all of you! We are super excited to have Clare Naber and Chris Couch from The Beltane Music Festival as our guests on No Simple Road!

Beltane Music Festival is a grassroots local festival that has grown from humble beginnings in Clare's backyard to a yearly festival complete with camping, vending, and the most badass musicians the Pacific Northwest has to offer! We sit down with Clare and Chris to talk all about the journey from the yard to the forest, the meaning of Beltane, why this festival started in the first place, what it means to do things intentionally, how the growth of the festival has changed the scene, why a musician has to be good at throwing stuff at things, and a whole lot more!

Beltane is taking place May 6th-8th in Scio, Oregon with performances from World's Finest, Polyrhythmics, Clinton Fearon, Highstep Society, Hillstomp, Outer Orbit, Band Of Comerados, Cytrus, Asher Fulero Band, Takimba, Rose Tinted, High Seagrass, Pretty Gritty, Ben Larson, DJPK, Pajama Jam, & Josh Garner.

Tickets are on sale now at www.beltanemusicfestival.com

Remember to hang out after the conversation with Chris & Clare to catch up with the No Simple Road crew!

We are extremely excited to have the one and only Jeff Mattson of Dark Star Orchestra as our guest on No Simple Road this week as part of our lead-up to Skull & Roses Festival. Guitarist and songwriter Jeff Mattson is one of the Jam scene’s most lasting voices having taken over Long Island in The Volunteers and The Zen Tricksters then rising to national prominence with The Donna Jean Godchaux Band. Mattson has also played with Phil Lesh & Friends both before and after taking the lead guitar post at Dark Star Orchestra.

We sit down with Jeff and get right to it talking about the rigors of returning to the road, playing for parking lots, how he got the gig with Dark Star, the magick of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, Wooley Mammoths, psychedelic fun, and a whole lot more!

We couldn't be more stoked to have J.M (Jonathan) Hart as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Jonathan is a musician, Host of 'The Brokedown Podcast', Co-Host of 'Undermine', avid record collector, Father, Husband, and the reason No Simple Road teamed up with Osiris Media! That's a lot of hats right there and we get into talking about most of them! We talk all about creating and releasing his first ever album 'Sunken Road', how he juggles all of his responsibilities, how he began doing The Brokedown Podcast, and no conversation would be complete with a host of The Helping Friendly Podcast and Undermine without a deep dive into Phish plus a whole lot more!

Check out the rest of 'Sunken Road' on Bandcamp and make sure to subscribe to all of the amazing Osiris Media podcasts including Undermine!

Remember to hang out after the conversation with Jonathan to catch up with the No Simple Road crew!

We are so excited to have the two creators of The Grateful Dead Tarot on No Simple Road this week! Elizabeth Jezorski is the mastermind behind Grateful Dead Tarot and the author of the guidebook. She dances through life sharing wisdom she pulls from the ancient arts of astrology, ceremony, and energy work. Erin Cadigan is the illustrator and product designer of Grateful Dead Tarot. She is a life long deadhead, occultist and creative soul constantly redefining her path through this lifetime.

We sit down with Erin & Liz and talk about how this incredible deck came to life, how even though they have never met in person there is still an undeniable energetic connection between them, why The Grateful Dead and their music make the perfect framework for a tarot deck, how the energy that has been poured into the imagery of the Dead helped shape the deck, and a whole ton more!

To purchase The Grateful Dead Tarot, sign up for one of their many workshops, and to just find out more head over to www.gratefuldeadtarot.com

Remember to hang out after the conversation with Liz & Erin to catch up with the No Simple Road crew!

This week's guest on No Simple Road is the one and only Ken Babbs and we couldn't be more honored! Ken is one of the original band of Merry Pranksters who, along with best friend Ken Kesey, became some of the psychedelic leaders of the 1960's and hosted The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests. Without the psychedelic foundation that they created No Simple Road simply would not exist!

Ken stops by to talk with us about his new book 'Cronies: Adventures with Ken Kesey, Neal Cassidy, The Merry Pranksters and The Grateful Dead', traveling across the country with The Merry Pranksters, not remembering the 60's, how to stay positive, and a whole lot more.

Remember to hang out after the conversation with Ken to catch up with the No Simple Road crew!

We're super excited this week to have all the guys from Spunj as our guests on No Simple Road! Spunj is a high energy, multi-genre four-piece based out of Eugene, Oregon. Using their diverse musical backgrounds and tastes, Spunj sets to make their live shows not just a musical performance, but an experience. The band incorporates classic songwriting with sections of improvisation to seamlessly weave from genre to genre while keeping the energy high and always danceable. Since 2019, the band has toured the Pacific Northwest relentlessly growing from playing bars and college parties to playing established and respectable venues and festivals and opening for major jam acts such as Cycles, Universe Peoples, Dubtonic Kru and Twiddle.

We hang out and talk about how the band has come together and morphed over the years, the Pacific Northwest jam scene, how it feels to be up-and-coming, the influences that have created their unique sound, creating their soon-to-be-released string of singles, and so much more!

We are super excited to have Dogs In A Pile as our guests on No Simple Road this week. Dogs in a Pile is the culmination of a love of music born from the deepest American roots of psychedelia, jazz, fusion, funk, traditional, and rock & roll. Sprung from the rich Asbury Park music scene in New Jersey, their serendipitous convergence has made for the kind of kindred intuition its members had only once dreamed of. Described as “listening to a single moving organism,” the sum of its five parts represents an original journey into the peaks and valleys of psychedelic improvisation, all while remaining reminiscent of so much we love of life and music.

We catch up with the Dogs to talk about their upcoming tour of the Eastern part of the US, creating 'Not Your Average Beagle', realizing that you are doing what you always dreamed of, the responsibility of carrying the future of the jam scene, why responsibility is so damn hard to master, and a whole lot more!

After cutting his teeth in Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Tea Leaf Green, bassist extraordinaire Reed Mathis established himself in the Grateful Dead world with membership in Billy & The Kids, The Rhythm Devils, Mickey Hart Band, Steve Kimock Band and the Golden Gate Wingmen. We catch up with Reed to talk about his upcoming show at The Chapel in San Francisco where he'll be performing a one-night-only presentation of music and improvisation, honoring, celebrating, and revisiting Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy!" and "Time Out Of Mind" masterworks, the importance of legacy, the Billy & The Kids shows at Red Rocks, what Bill Kreutzmann has taught him and shown him, how experiencing life too intensely has manifested for him, the genius of Bjork, and a ton more!
