We're stoked this week to have Ethan Miller of Howlin Rain as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Over nearly 20 years, Howlin Rain may have become the quintessential independent American rock ’n roll band: a steam-spitting Hydra of cranked guitars, kicking asphalt dust through a kaleidoscoping travelogue of desert motels and dives, volleying forth transmissions of sci-fi poetry from the blacktop veins of this cracked and aching country. Now, in America 2021, capping these strangest and sorest of times, the band returns with The Dharma Wheel, a six-track, 52-minute dive into a joyous fantasy realm of exaggerated present.

We catch up with Ethan for a conversation about the evolving sound of Howlin Rain, creating the new album 'The Dharma Wheel', his decision to add keyboard wizard Adam MacDougall to the mix, how we can strive to not be like the insects, how he feels now that he's able to get back at it on the road, ways to be a little more gentle with ourselves, and a whole lot more!

We’re so excited to have Andy Frasco on No Simple Road for his 3rd time and we're basically going to therapy together with this conversation! We jump right to the action this week and start digging into why Andy has such a hard time accepting his successes, why we struggle against our happiness, what makes us keep reaching for something bigger while being unable to enjoy the moment, how our past can haunt us even now, why Aaron forgets to eat, and a whole lot more!

Frasco is not just a friend of the family, he’s the host of the hugely popular Andy Frasco’s Worldsaving Podcast, bandleader for Andy Frasco and the U.N., host of ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, and who knows what else! If you haven’t been to a Frasco show, well, you need to do that immediately and you can find out all his tour info, news, and more over at: www.andyfrasco.com

Also, make sure to check out the new live album 'Live On The Rocks' streaming everywhere you get your music.

Nic Clark had a fairly unconventional childhood, which is perhaps one reason why his first album, Love Your Life / Songs for the Whole Family, came out youth-centric.  It wasn’t that he wasn’t supported— in fact, his mom got him the certificate that allowed him to play in bars at the tender age of twelve.  It was the school thing.  His school system in the Denver area had a truancy court, and he set up semi-permanent residency there around the 7th grade.

You see, he had found the blues.  Visiting a bookstore with his brother, he found a book about harmonica playing which included pictures of Sonny Boy Williamson and Stevie Wonder and a harmonica….and he never came down.  The harp was his school, and he never missed a class there.  Soon he was playing live and then, after the shattering loss of both a young cousin and his grandfather, he found the healing power of music, too.

We talk with Nic about growing up in a multi-generational household and how that has affected the way he creates music, how he found the harmonica, why school took a backseat to playing, creating the new album ‘Love your life’, why he wanted to make an album for all ages to enjoy, and a whole lot more!

The third album from Maggie Rose, Have a Seat is the work of a phenomenally gifted artist showing the full extent of her power. After years of honing her chops and making her name as a force-of-nature vocalist, the Nashville-based singer/songwriter has dreamed up her own unbridled collision of rock-and-roll, soul, folk, funk, and R&B: a fittingly eclectic sound for a musician whose live experience includes opening for Heart and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, touring as direct support for Kelly Clarkson, and sharing the Cayamo Cruise bill with Emmylou Harris and Jason Isbell—all in 2019 alone. Centered on the stunning vocal command she’s revealed in taking the stage at The Grand Ole Opry over 80 times, Have a Seat finds Rose approaching her music with more confidence and clarity of vision than ever, ultimately sharing a selection of songs both timeless and urgent.

We sit down with Maggie and go deep into the feelings of returning to the stage after the forced break of lockdown, the feelings of seeing the crowd responding to her music again, how we can move forward into the future with a little grace and gentleness, what her podcast ‘Salute The Songbird’ is all about, her recent experiences playing big festivals, creating her new album ‘Have A Seat’, and so much more!

We are extremely excited to have Vince Herman as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Things are just more fun when Vince Herman is around, and since helping co-found Leftover Salmon over a quarter century ago, Leftover Salmon shows have always been the most fun. Herman moved to Boulder, CO from Morgantown, West Virginia, where he was attending West Virginia University, in 1985. On his first night in town, he met his future bandmate Drew Emmitt at a show for Emmitt’s group at the time, the Left Hand String Band. The two struck up an immediate friendship. For a short time after moving to Boulder, Herman joined The Left Hand String Band, marking the first time the two would play together in a band. Herman soon left The Left Hand String Band to pursue his own musical vision. He formed the Salmon Heads, a Cajun-jug band that tried to wrangle all of Herman’s disparate musical influences, Cajun, Calypso, Ska, and bluegrass into a coherent musical statement. His vision was fully realized on New Year’s Eve 1989 when the Salmon Heads and The Left Hand String Band united forces for a show.

We catch up with Vince to talk about dealing with coming out the other side of quarantine, creating the New High Hawks album, what it means to be a psychedelic chef, finding others that share your passions, making a new solo album, why Charlie Daniels was a hippie, and so much more!
