No Simple Road

We are extremely stoked this week to have Chris Pandolfi of The Infamous Stringdusters as our guest! We get right down to business with Chris discussing some of the deeper aspects of being a musician and also a human being, like not letting your mistakes become part of your identity, how practice and repetition open the door to 'the zone', ways to strive for success and be on top of your game, the rich oral tradition of Bluegrass music, and so much more!

Aside from the Dusters, Chris has a few solo endeavors that keep him busy. TRAD+ is a banjo-centric exploration of a different sonic world, combining vinyl samples, drums, synths, strings, beats and much more. He released his first album, Interference, in the fall of 2015, and it’s been downloaded over 600,000 times internationally. TRAD+ continues to evolve and more new music is on the way.

His latest venture is his podcast, ‘Inside the Musician’s Brain.’ It’s a deep dive into everything that’s underneath the music and the artists that inspire us. He explores the Stringdusters world and sits down with other influential artists to discuss inspiration, creativity, and the many facets of bringing a musical vision to life. New episodes come out every two weeks. ITMB is part of the Osiris Media

We are excited to bring you Lauren Murphy of The Psychedelics and Deb Grabein of The Sound Field this week on No Simple Road! Lauren Murphy shares more than a little with The Sound Field, not the least of which are the musicians David Salvia and Mark Karan. The latter, who co-produced Psychedelics with Murphy herself at Dauphin Street Sound in Mobile, AL., also accompanies members of the band named after this record. Such continuity of activity further delineates common roots in the Sixties also extending to a package layout by Bob Minkin Design (he of so many superb photos of the Grateful Dead even apart from his book Photographed By (Insight Editions , 2014) as well as two songs here co-authored by the late wordsmith Robert Hunter for that latter band.

Thanks in part to the augmentation of its core trio, The Sound field's second album, This Moment of the Storm, is an incrementally ghostly listening experience over the course of its dozen tracks and near sixty-minutes duration. The esteemed David Lindley, long-time accompanist to Jackson Browne, adds color with lap steel on "Cry For Memory" and "Walk" plus bouzouki on "Copperhead Road," while Mark Karan, best known for his long-term work with former members of the Grateful Dead, chips in with suitably intricate guitar work.

This is a heavy conversation! We get into women’s role in the music industry, how the patriarchy has affected their music, creating the new albums, playing at Sweetwater during the pandemic, and a ton more!!!

Make sure to check out THE SOUND FIELD on all streaming platforms!

Also check out PSYCHEDEICS also streaming everywhere!

We are extremely excited to have Greg Loiacono of The Mother Hips as our guest on No Simple Road this week! From his first gigs with the legendary The Mother Hips all the way up to his most recent solo album Mystic Traces Greg Loiacono has always been driven by one unwavering desire: to connect. In music, he found a direct conduit to the soul, a miraculous means by which to inspire and unite, and it’s guided him like a compass throughout his remarkable career. Whether Loiacono’s fronting his solo band, producing records, guesting with peers like Phil Lesh or Chris Robinson, or onstage by himself, it’s all part of a never-ending quest to generate and celebrate the magic of shared human experience.

We talk with Greg about re-releasing 30 years of Mother Hips music on vinyl, creating his new solo album 'Mystic Traces', coping with solitude and pressure throughout the Pandemic, sobriety and his desire to connect with other humans as a way to stay clean and sober, and a whole lot more!

We are super stoked to have Chad Staehly from The High Hawks as our guest on No Simple Road this week! In mythology, the hawk is often associated with intuition, healing, spiritual awareness, unification. They seem to appear when you need them most, evoking a feeling of clarity, focus, or maybe courage. The six members of this outfit met on the road touring across America, admiring one another as musicians and characters. When they finally came together in Vince Herman's living room in the Colorado high country, it wasn't apparent what kind of music would be made. What ended up happening was six friends transfiguring into The High Hawks, born of deep respect for one another, a musical openness and curiosity, and a love of those musicians and characters that flew before them!

We talk with Chad about winging it into playing their first show, what it was like creating the new self-titled album, saying what needs to be said with your music with love, what comes from an energetic connection with your brothers while playing, the love of the Grateful Dead, and a whole bunch more!

Make sure to check out more with The High Hawks

We are stoked today to bring you Brian Lagerstrom from Weeds & Sardines! Weeds & Sardines is a wildly popular YouTube cooking channel that was born out of the Pandemic! While Lagerstrom started making videos during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, his move into YouTube began long before we grew sick of the word “pivot.” When, like many Americans, Lagerstrom was furloughed in mid-March, he was already two years gone from the restaurant industry.

I know it may seem strange to have a YouTube Chef on No Simple Road but I assure you the crossovers are there! We talk with Brian about recreating himself several times, changing from musician, to Chef, to YouTube star. We get into what his reason is behind trying to each folks to cook, how music and food are so much alike, how learning to cook, just a bit better, can spread love and intention to those we love, how Brian helped Aaron get through some emotional up's & down's during quarantine (and make kick ass Apple Fritters), plus a bunch more!!

Make sure to head over to Weeds & Sardines on YouTube and give a 'Like' & Subscribe'
