What could be more perfect for our 200th episode than to have the one and only Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay as our guest?! We're incredibly honored to talk to Donna and hear about her journey with The Band Beyond Description! Donna sang with the Grateful Dead from 1972 until 1979 but her musical trip didn't end there! In 2009, Donna Jean formed a brand new band, the Donna Jean Godchaux Band, with Jeff Mattson (of Phil Lesh and Friends, Zen Tricksters and Dark Star Orchestra after re-entering the music scene with Mattson and Mookie Siegel (of David Nelson Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Ratdog) to form Kettle Joe's Psychedelic Swamp Revue, later known as Donna Jean and the Tricksters.

We talk with donna about her first Grateful Dead show experience, how and why she ended up in the band, releasing her song 'Shelter' with Donna Jean and the Tricksters, singing with Elvis, the beauty of our community, the profound nature of the magick of the Grateful Dead, and too much more to put here!

This week on No Simple Road we are stoked to have Jude Smith as our guest. Inspired by class acts such as George Benson, John Mayer, and Michael Jackson, Jude Smith plays to a different tune than most. A Nashville native and multi-instrumentalist, Jude rose to Instagram-stardom through his guitar playing and musical content while showcasing his one-man-band ability - gaining over 100,000 followers in 2019. Since then, his self-produced EP's and string of singles have amassed over half a million streams, and bring to the table the timeless recipe of an irresistible melody mixed with charming instrumentation, a deep appreciation for groove and musicianship, and carefully crafted arrangements centered around his guitar playing - often being the sole performer on each track. Jude currently lives in Nashville, TN as an Artist and Music Producer.

We talk to Jude about coming up and finding that music was the thing he is passionate about, leaving school to pursue his real interest, ways of caring for the artist inside, the importance of finding the fun in everything you do, and a whole lot more!

This week on No Simple Road we welcome the one and only Anders Osborne! Between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work, New Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. He is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today. Guitar Player calls him “the poet laureate of Louisiana’s fertile roots music scene.” New Orleans' Gambit Weekly has honored Osborne as the Entertainer Of The Year. OffBeat named him the Crescent City’s Best Guitarist for the third year in a row, and the Best Songwriter for the second straight year. Osborne also won Song Of The Year for his composition, Louisiana Gold.

Anders spends some time with the No Simple Road crew discussing life in and out of quarantine, creating the new album 'Orpheus And The Mermaids', what really matters in this life, sobriety and the struggles within, why New Orleans is such a magical place, and much more!

We are extremely honored this week on No Simple Road to welcome Susana Millman as our guest! Around 25 years ago, Susana Millman became a Bay Area photographer. In the spirit of her love for bad puns, she dubbed herself “mamarazi,” although she’s certainly more benign than the paparazzi. Best known for her photography of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead from the mid-1980s on through later incarnations, she’s also spent a significant proportion of her professional life shooting dance (the Mark Morris Dance Group), travel (especially Asian religious architecture), events (the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge) and interiors, as sampled in this site’s galleries.

She and her husband Dennis McNally live in San Francisco, where they enjoy time spent with their daughter, Season Korchin, her husband Jono, and their grandsons, Julian and Elias. She is involved with a variety of progressive causes and works with two international programs that support literacy , Caravan to Class in Mali, and 100 schools in Myanmar.

We talk to Susana about the magic and mystery of the Grateful Dead, what makes the Grateful Dead so special, why she loves seeing life through the eye of a camera, what it was like being a fly on the wall with the band beyond description, and a whole lot more!

Head over to mamarazi.com to check out he book and more!

This week on No Simple Road we're proud to bring you Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski of Soule Monde! Soule Monde is avant funk erupting from the syncopated minds of power

drummer Russ Lawton + B3 wizard Ray Paczkowski. An ideal union of swagger and raw talent, the duo is cemented into an indestructible pocket, where bold improvisational leaps by either player are met by a near-telepathic response from the other. This is fluid funk, crafted for the dance floor but supported by an extensive grasp of jazz improvisation.

Ray & Russ hang out with us to talk about creating their upcoming album 'Mimi Digs It', what it was like being a beacon of hope for so many with 'The Beacon Jams', transitioning from a full band to a duet and the challenges that poses, who 'Mimi' actually is, the power of community in helping Ray through his tumor struggle, and a whole lot more!

Andy Stepanian from Leon III (that's pronounced Leon the 3rd) is our guest on No Simple Road this week! Andy and his Wrinkle Neck Mules bandmate Mason Brent have created something miraculous with the new album 'Antlers In Velvet'. The two left Nashville for Stinson Beach, California and Beech House Studios and created an album that is a textured pool of psychedelic wonderment, filled with deep grooves, haunting shadows, and vibrating rhythms that tickle that corner of the brain that so rarely gets its fix. It's very easy to see that this is one of the NSR crew's new favorites so we were super stoked to talk with Andy about departing from playing bluegrass with Wrinkle Neck Mules, what his intention was in creating the new album, how he feels about the re-emerging music scene, our similar musical history, the legacy of the Grateful Dead and their influence on his musical style, and so much more!

Make sure you check out the new album and for more on Leon II go to: www.leoniii.com

This week on No Simple Road we welcome Jamel aka Jamal to the show! Jamel is responsible for some of the most moving, funny, heartfelt, and creative reaction videos on YouTube. Jamel's reactions to the Good Ol' Grateful Dead drew us in and reminded us of what that moment of realization was like for us. We had to have him on! We sit down with Jamel to talk about growing up without role models, finding the music of the Grateful Dead through his YouTube channel, what the Grateful Dead community means to him, how he got started creating videos, how he met and courted his wife, and a whole lot more!
