This week on No Simple Road we are super excited to have Marcus Rezak as our guest! Known as a master of jazz improvisation and a seasoned artist of the sit-in, Rezak is a frequent call among bands and musicians. Rezak’s 2018 debut as a bandleader saw him collaborating alongside Kris Myers and Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee, Arthur Barrow of Frank Zappa’s band, and legendary saxophonist Bill Evans. Since then he has toured across the US with eclectic lineups featuring the likes of Ike Willis, Kris Myers, Jay Lane, Scott Page, and more; led his band through two tours on the US Virgin Islands; spearheaded official Umphrey’s McGee afterparties, and continued to hone his chops in his home studio and licensing endeavors.

‘Truth in Sound’ is Rezak’s most recent work featuring members of Trey Anastasio Band, esteemed percussionist Kaylan Pathak, and more. His adaptability and exceptional skill have garnered Rezak much respect in the music world and have leveraged his ability to take his craft to integral heights.

Marcus sits down to talk with us about creating the new album 'Truth In Sound',playing with Russ Lawton, Ray Paczkowski, and Tony Markellis and the impact that Ton;y's passing had on how he sees the new music they created, the spiritual side of making music, what his 'turn-on' moment was like, and a whole lot more!

It's been a long journey for the past 19 months. We all know it's true. This mid-week short drop is a few of The Conductor's thoughts and ideas on heading back out into the musical community and seeing our collective trip with some new lenses and renewed sense of gratitude. Also, he just wanted to ride in the car or plane with you as you travel to Phish's West Coast run! Travel safe and see you all soon!

We are super excited to have Skerik as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Decade upon decade, Skerik remains the tireless steward for one of modern music's most diverse, adventurous & passionate bodies of work. Skerik's world is one where dialogue flows freely between wildly disparate strains of musical thought... where no borders exist between jazz & sludge metal, where elements of Congolese soukous dialect might find their way onto the million-selling records of an alternative rock band, where an avant-garde electronic translation of Ornette Coleman's deepest & darkest fantasies (shared with a select few listeners in a small club) easily attains the same level of satisfaction & meaning as an exuberant explosion of jazz/funk catharsis (shared with hordes of sweaty festival crowds all over the world).

We get right down to business with Skerik talking about our current landscape, lessons learned through years on the road, dealing with fear and pressure as a society, being 'the' grunge saxophonist, how musicians are an asset to our culture, dealing with the financial aspects of a musical career, and a whole ton more! Make sure to check out Garage A Trois' new album 'Calm Down Cologne' everywhere music streams.

A mid-week special episode with Starfinder Stanley and Hawk from The Owsley Stanley Foundation. The Owsley Stanley Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of “Bear’s Sonic Journals,” Owsley’s archive of more than 1,300 live concert soundboard recordings from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including recordings by Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, and more than 80 other artists across nearly every musical idiom. These analog reel-to-reel recordings are nearing the end of their expected shelf lives and will deteriorate and be lost forever if they are not preserved and that is the mission of the Owsley Stanley Foundation.

We check in with Starfinder and Hawk and talk about finding the most recent release 'Bear's Sonic Journals: Merry-Go-Round At The Carousel' Tim Buckley at the Carousel Ballroom on June 15th & 16th 1968. This is a true gem and among Buckley aficionados considered to be a seminal performance. We also get into some of the inner workings of the OSF and how everyone out there can help make sure Bear's meticulous work and honored legacy live on!

Head over to owsleystanlyfoundation.org to check out the full catalog of releases and to see how you can sponsor a reel (or reels) and make sure the music never stops!

We are super excited this week to have Elliott Peck as our guest! As one of the most sought-after vocalists on the West Coast, Elliott Peck has made a name for herself lending harmonies to everyone from Phil Lesh and Bob Weir to Jackie Greene and Reid Genauer. As a member of the band Midnight North, she’s appeared on bills with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and The Mother Hips and slayed festivals from Lockn’ to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Now, with her mesmerizing solo debut, Peck is stepping center stage, ready to prove she’s a talent more than worthy of the spotlight on her own.

We talk with Elliott about coming back from quarantine with a ton of creative projects in the works, the new Midnight North Album 'There's Always A Story', how she stays healthy while being on the road, being the only female on the road with a bunch of dudes, her memories of playing in Portland and her reception from the fans here, and a whole lot more!

This week No Simple Road is extremely excited to have Funk You as our guest! Friends, fun, and love comprise the ethos of Funk You, a nine-piece musical juggernaut from Augusta, Georgia. Motivated by a love of liver performance and armed with a captivating sonic presence, the band places a healthy helping of soul atop a funky backbeat that continues to evolve even after a decade on the road!

We start this episode, before the interview, with a check in from The Northwest String Summit Peacock Pickin' Party. This is NSR's first time at a show since quarantine and we brought a couple listeners along for the ride!

Then, we get into our conversation with the guys from Funk You about getting back at it after the Great Pause, seeing fans get emotional from the stage, re-releasing their first album for their 10 year anniversary with an entire horn section, being "precautious", and a whole lot more!

This week we are super honored and excited to bring you the one and only Benny 'Burle' Galloway! When Yonder Mountain String Band arrived in Colorado from Illinois, trying to make its name in the bluegrass world, they needed a friend who knew the ropes. Benny Galloway was their man. Galloway had been a part of the Colorado acoustic-music scene since moving here from the New Orleans area in the mid-’70s. Galloway had the wealth of experiences and contacts that Yonder Mountain was short on. A singer, songwriter and guitarist who also dabbled in dobro, bass and piano, Galloway had led his own bands, played bass in the Front Range group Fret Knot, jammed with the members of Leftover Salmon and Runaway Truck Ramp. This is the guy who the bands would come to after tour, lick their wounds, have some BBQ, and get centered again.

We spent the day with Burle talking about everything from Yonder's early days, living the Cowboy life, existing in the parenthesis, seeing Northwest String Summit grow into what it is today, seeing music as form and not sound, and oh.... so much more!
