Nonplussed

Flipping your fins, you would hopefully get farther than anywhere this movie takes you. There is not enough water in this movie to douse our hot takes! This week we take a look at 1984’s Splash, which is lauded for its screenplay for some reason, and do our level best to find the pearl in this bedraggled pinnacle of 1980s romcoms.

Hey there, chowderheads! Smootch your best dame, grab your tommy gun, and blast off with us this week as we take to the skies with The Rocketeer! It’s a delightful, action-packed, panoply of pulp that manages to solidify the concepts of Nazis and boobs as recurring topics on this podcast. Here we are. Welcome.

Shout out to listeners who’ve seen some of the set pieces at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: http://www.mainstgazette.com/2013/06/south-seas-club.html

Show yourself! This week we head into the unknown for Frozen II, and our conclusion is that we wholeheartedly regret sleeping on this one when it was in theaters. Frozen II is a very refreshing Disney film that not only deals with the realities of colonialism, but also of grief, codependency, identity, and 80s pop ballads. A fairly solid entry as far as we're concerned, so join along as we break it down!

This week on Nonplussed we try to offer a distraction from the world at large by diving in to a magical world of make believe. We wish it was less problematic, but you know what they say about wishes!

We find the funny where we can, but they're no escaping the dark legacy of Pan. Some resources a bit more qualified than we are to discuss the depictions in this film:

• "Disney+ adds disclaimer to ‘Dumbo’ and ‘Peter Pan’ for depicting racist stereotypes," Marketwatch
• "The Racist History of Peter Pan's Indian Tribe," Smithsonian Magazine
• "Peter Pan Is the Boy Who Never Stopped Being Racist," Fatherly

This week, we were both surprised and delighted by "Frank and Ollie." In a more honest (or perhaps just deeper?) take than one might expect from a documentary about two of Disney's Nine Old Men, we get to know the men who are probably responsible for one of your favorite Disney animation moments. We delight in the glam of early Hollywood, explore the depths of their friendship, and we even see a boob or two. We're truly stepping up our Disney nerd cred after this week's viewing. Get lost in the magic - or in Ollie's office - with us!

We were anything but speechless on this week's episode. Join us as we fall down the well of the 2019 live-action adaptation of Aladdin, asking the important questions like, "What are the stakes here?" and "Is that monkey going to haunt my dreams?" We experienced a whole new world of disappointment, but managed to find a diamond in the rough more than once. So our track record is at least better than Jafar's.

We're gonna take you all the way (down the bayou) on this week's episode! We watch The Princess and the Frog for the first time ever, and we have THOUGHTS. Most notably that it doesn't take friends on the other side to see that Tiana is one of the hardest working princesses in the canon. Y'all want some candy? Listen to us tell a tale from long before the Superdome, where the Saints of Football play.

Boats, booty, and a midnight buffet! This week, Clancy introduces Josh to Muppet Treasure Island and all its piratical puppet pomp! It’s a regular festival of conviviality as we fight off our own cabin fever and revel in the glory of this adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic! How does she do that?

We kick off our excursion into the Disney+ catalogue by literally coming out of the closet to discuss 1971's Bedknobs and Broomsticks! Bob along as we follow correspondence witch Eglantine Price and her hard-worn foster kids on a magical journey of self-discovery, mild misogyny, and big ol’ pantyhose. Josh gets big Poppins vibes. Clancy teaches us about sodium vapor film processing. Both of them giggle copiously. It’s a beautiful, briny delight!
