Nonplussed

We know, we know. “Boys,” you’re saying to yourself, “another *brand new* movie?” But hey, at least you didn’t have to pay for this one. All things considered, it’s probably the queerest lineup of content on The Platform we could have done. And what better way to move from spring to summer (ish), from Gemini season to Cancer season (whatever that means) or from Pride Month to Wrath Month (fear us) than by covering Pixar’s hotly debated Luca? Not by cramming into a bar with Miss Delta Variant on sweeping her way across the pageant circuit, that’s for damn sure.

Happy Pride 2021, Nonplussed Niblings! To celebrate, we’re taking a mini vacay to celebrate our cultural heritage. But not to worry! We’re giving you a sneak peek of our Patreon content AND staying on brand/timely by covering Pixar’s 2020 short, Out! Originally recorded for Patreon.com/MakingMichief last summer, this episode is a perfect peek into the bonus content patrons receive from the boys at Nonplussed. We get a little more personal, a little less edited, and just about as goofy. If you listen closely, you can hear real emotions!

The DeVil wears flambada in this week's episode of Nonplussed! We watched Cruella in an actual theater and also paid for that premiere access. It’s so nice to be able to go to an Alamo Drafthouse and see movies again (socially distanced and masked up, of course). And what a darling movie to come back to! A fashion heist with some adorable dogs? Yes, please! Listen while we carry on about how good these Emmas’ are, and how dalmations don’t live that long.

Oh, and if it wasn’t obvious - spoilers abound!Anyway, must dash!

It's hard to make fun of a really good movie. In fact, we're 2/2 this year on guests serving us an absolute treat to dive into. This week, we are joined by none other than Miss Congeniality of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 11 - the one and only Nina West! Hot off the news of her new KIDS SHOW and PRIDE LINE WITH LANE BRYANT the fabulous Miss West was gracious enough to give us an hour (and change) of her time to discuss one of her favorite movies... only for Josh to ruin it by talking about vibrators. BONUS: It’s another Nazis and Boobs Movie!

This isn’t the first Shakespearean adaptation we’ve tackled on the show. It’s not even the second, come to think of it. But it is the first one starting Gay Icons and is also somehow the most… tepid? It’s okay. It’s at least as amusing as Splash. And is considerably more progressive, all told. We even get some Gay without the Panic, and only a dash of lingering Hayes Code. If we include this in queer cinema, then it’s certainly one of the funniest. But if you had to pick, maybe watch But I’m a Cheerleader over this. Get to this eventually. But it’s not urgent.

This week, the boys are joined by the one and only Mike Schubert (@schubes17) (of the Potterless podcast and the [FUNDED] Kickstarter project Modern Muckraker) as he guides them through the show’s very first series: Forky Asks a Question! Legit, the credits are as long as the episodes themselves. In a 21st century world of quick consumable content (WHY isn’t anyone doing that as a publishing platform???), this inaugural Disney+ series is a prime example of why Pixar will probably continue winning awards even though it kind of gets boring after a while.

WHAT? NO!

It should have stopped hereafter;

There would have been time for much a cut.

- A bad pun, and a bad pun, and a bad pun,

Creeps in this choppy pace from scene to scene,

To the last syllable of running time;

And all our yesterfilms have lighted fools

The way to crusty jokes.

But, but, brief viewer!

Craft is yet a saving feature, all good players

That strut and fret this hour and twenty four

And do perform so well. It is a tale

Told by many voices, full of Elton John songs,

Signifying nothing.

Oh, my giddy aunt!

“Wait, did I miss when they did the first one?” No, no you did not. “Do I need to have seen that one?” ‘Need’ is doing a lot of work there. “Should I watch this one before I listen?” Well, we fully predict a Monster at the End of This Book moment, but no. You probably shouldn’t. You should probably clean the lint trap on your dryer instead. Maybe trim the cat’s nails. Check the filter on your dishwasher. Yeah, that’s a thing. Just spend the hour or so listening to us while being productive rather than wasting any of your precious, hard-earned free time watching Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties. Trust us. They use the word “paddywhacker” in a line of dialogue in this movie that feels awkwardly patriotic for what is on the one hand a Catholic feast day, and on the other hand is a college binge day. If you’ve never seen it, we’d wager you know everything you need to know about this movie from that line. Join us as we work through various flashbacks triggered by middle parts and terrifying roller coasters, and try not to get too put off by the awful stereotypical brogue Josh wields like a shillelagh.

What can we say? This week, Clancy gets introduced to the unquestionable excellence of Disney’s made-for-TV classic, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. It seems impossible that he’s never seen it, but you know what the lady says. Whitney, Brandy, Whoopi, and Bernadette. The ‘97 spin on the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic Cinderella was a cornerstone for many, a triumph for the network, and a straight up bop. It’s hard not to enjoy this one. Especially if you’re a young drag-queen-to-be looking for inspiration. Winga Myfancy, shante you stay!
