Nonplussed

Buckle up, kids, lest you get carsick. We went on an overlong road trip and broke it down to under an hour for you with Pixar’s 2006 nostalgia wank, Cars. Did we mention this movie is too long? Because it is. And it raises more questions than it answers. Do Cars mate? Are they mammals? If they “eat” gasoline, what are their tongues for aside from talking? Are they for sex? Are there homosexumobiles? Why were none of those long haul trucks cuddling? Why should the audience care about the main character? You know, little questions like that.

It’s Hiatus Two: Grogu Boogaloo on this week’s Nonplussed! Last week, we tackled Marvel news from Investor Day. This week, we tackle Star Wars! We tell you other people’s news about the news about Star Wars. And if that’s not Peak Geek Culture, I don’t know what is. Also don’t worry about Josh, his throat is dry because of “Cedar Fever.” That’s a real thing. G’head, Google it. It *should* be SFW.

Yeah, I just checked, it is.

Punch it!

This week, Clancy and Josh shift format just a little bit in a valiant attempt to cover the MCU news out of Investor Day, a few leaks, and also a rumor or two. We’re a week late on this one, but we hope you took time to take care of yourselves just as we did. Either way, we took January “off” and this is already more work than it needs to be, but we’re having FUN. Isn’t everyone having FUN?!

Excelsior!

This week the boss stops by to wish us a merry Christmas! Mischief Media’s own host of Extraneouses SPN and Steven Universe Leah Cornish joins as we romp and read our way through beloved modern Christmas classic, “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” We lament the lack of award season recognition for both Michael Caine and Frank Oz, discuss Gonzo’s fowl habits, and attempt to drive off the haunting image of Christmas Pasts’ teeny baby hands from our night terrors.

Last week in a galaxy not-so-far away, we watched the brand new LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special! Look, if they can do it with Haunted Mansion, we can do it with Nonplussed. We’re bridging the gap from spoopy season into winter wonderland with Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas! Join us as we marvel at the filmmaking genius behind this story of a bored white guy at the top of his game who turns to cultural appropriation just to feel alive again. I mean, we see this headline like once a week, right?

We bring Spooptober to a close with 1949’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad! This one has had a choppy history (literally), and is one part gag-a-minute cartoonery, one-part Bing Crosby’s Halloween Visual Album. Buxom Dutch girls, horse drag queens, and dual mustaches all make for compelling viewing this season. Join us as we absolutely lose our heads and take you nowhere in particular!

Our month of spoopy goodness continues with the Disney Channel Original “favorite,” Halloweentown! It’s the show’s first DCO film, and wowsers it’s a doozy. Neither Josh nor Clancy caught this one in their youth, and their feelings are true to the Nonplussed name. They attempt to demystify the popularity of this magically inauspicious grab at the rising teen wizard wave of the late 90s. One thing can be said for certain: the late, great Debbie Reynolds knows how to commit.

We’re kicking off a month of spoopy goodness with Tim Burton’s 2012 stop-motion adaptation of his own short film, Frankenweenie! Clancy was less than electrified, unless you count each time he shrieked at Mr. Whiskers. It’s a macabre, spindly pastiche of classic horror, with many of those tried (tired?) and true Burtonesque trademarks we’ve come to expect, saying, “Ah yes, gothic irony, kooky adults, and sharp angles. This… is a Tim Burton film.”

This week’s episode is dedicated to the memory of our own bright, loving, and wonderful dog - Obee. She took her journey over the rainbow bridge suddenly and unexpectedly after we recorded this episode. Rather than chuck this baby out with the proverbial bathwater, we decided to embrace the dramatic irony and release it in her honor. To Obelia Reneé “Obee” Wittge: fashion icon, epic snorer, and world-class spooner.
