Strange World is an odd duck. It’s trying too hard, but not for the reasons the comments on Rotten Tomatoes would have you think. It’s a bit cliche to blame the failure of a charmer on lack of confidence from the studio (read: marketing budget), but we think that’s the case here. While Josh liked it more than Clancy did, there are a number of things we agree on: it’s gorgeous, Dennis Quaid is a remarkable VO actor, and it’s only “inappropriate for children” if you’ve taught your children to be bigots.

We say this a lot and we’re certain no one listens, but you don’t need to see The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Net-net, you’re better off watching a live recording of the ballet with some mulled wine and a some of Santa’s *special* cookies because this… this is just a tragedy. And it’s a CHRISTMAS movie. It defies belief.

Oh and apparently “I’m the King of the Castle” is a nursery rhyme and we’d just never heard it? Shrug emoji.

It’s hard to imagine a more disturbing take on Pinocchio after the 1940 animated film. The coachman? The smoke monsters? The body horror of becoming a donkey? Horrifying. Effective, even, as the cautionary tale it was.

But this? Literal nightmare fuel. And not just Tom Hanks’ attempt at an Italian accent. There’s also the screaming souls of the damned in the cuckoo clocks, the anthropomorphic animals everyone is just fine with. Monstro as a kraken. What is happening? Who is this for? Not us. Not you. Let us take the pressure off. Sit back, relax, and try not to think about the lifeless painted eyes of a dead boy’s soul… watching you… wanting to know if someone… anyone… will make him a real boy…

Spoiler Alert: We missed talking about the leather bear. We were so excited to get this out on time that we just skipped right over the actual gayest thing in this movie. It almost warrants a re-record, but who’s got the time for that, much less rewatching Enchanted before you watch the sequel. We’re all busy. Pop in those airpods (are they clean?), hit play, and let’s do some gift wrapping together. Or in our case, frantic packing for an interstate move to a house we’re buying?!

It’s a Ruh-Ruh-Ruh-Rewind! We’re taking it back to our first season with The Nightmare Before Christmas because we’re both traveling for work and also trying to buy a house? We’re adults. It surprises us, too.

We’re bridging the gap from spoopy season into winter wonderland with Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas! Join us as we marvel at the filmmaking genius behind this story of a bored white guy at the top of his game who turns to cultural appropriation just to feel alive again. I mean, we see this headline like once a week, right?

Welcome, foolish mortals, to another spooptastic episode of Nonplussed! This week, we shriek about the ghostly goofery of 2003’s The Haunted Mansion. A family-friendly Eddie Murphy romp based on a theme park attraction with literal and euphemistic breasts. Also a penis. Maybe some masturbation tips. It’s hard to say.

Pro Tip: Don’t dump your loved one’s cremains on the attraction because they will close it down to vacuum up your nana.

Hocus Pocus 2 is exactly what you would expect it to be. As much as it excels in grounding and contemporizing its protagonists (who we’d love to see more of), it struggles in fits and starts to breathe new life into the resurrected corpses of anyone but Billy Butcherson. And perhaps Sarah.

Much like its predecessor, it’s fine! Who doesn’t enjoy - nay, tolerate - “family friendly” Halloween content? But there’s a reason it took this long to get made, and a big part of that is a dedicated, already-bought-in audience. Magika mystica captialisticka.

Flame off, y’all. It’s slobberin’ time. 2015’s Fantastic Four - also somewhat famously billed as Fant4stic - is a rocky worst case scenario of making comic book movies “more grounded.” This flaccid foursome forestalls any enjoyment you might have even as a fly-by-night fan of the First Family of Marvel Comics and stretches even the most flexible suspensions of disbelief. The bar is set unreasonably low for their first foray into the MCU, but I’m still hopeful they’ll burn right past my expectations.
