This week we're stepping back into the Remnant Chronicles universe with Mary E. Pearson's post-trilogy sequel, Vow of Thieves! As two people who still haven't read The Remnant Chronicles trilogy (it's on our TBR we swear) we thoroughly enjoyed this book! One of us even starts full on crying in this episode while talking about it. It's just a beautiful story, okay!!!! Also in this episode, we talk about the strong protagonists that are Kazi and Jase, the Ballenger family members that are on our shit list, Jase restoring our faith in male main characters, and the absolute best trope to ever exist in literature. Kaitlin gets so excited about this trope she knocks her mic over, and now that she's typing this description, she's wondering if maybe that's why it stopped working properly halfway through which then caused some additional editing...who's to say!

This week we're visiting another book by Madeline Miller that made both of us go oingo boingo bonkers insane! Circe takes us to a vivid and beautiful world full of the most incredible prose we've ever read. We discuss womanhood, what it means to be alive, how this book made us think about our parents, share a handful of Miller's jaw-dropping quotes, and finally, Emberlin tries to get Kaitlin canceled when their zoom meeting ended in the middle of recording. She had it coming!

In our discussion of Stephen King's The Shining, Kaitlin finally puts her degree to use, Emberlin has a love/hate relationship with King's writing, we take a step into the wonderful world of Dad Lore and, we discuss if a book can really scare you when you've already lived through The Horrors.

Welcome to the first week of Sbooktacular October! Each Thursday of this month, we'll be reviewing a ~spooky~ book for the ~spooky~ season! To kick things off we're starting with the classic 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. In this episode we discuss the things that scare us most, doomed characters and the yearning for a different life, comparing the book to the Netflix television series of the same name and finally, how all ghosts are our friends (well, at least the chill ones are).

For our final review of our Back to School reads we tackle the Arthur Miller play ‘The Crucible.’ In this episode, we dive into the history of the Salem Witch Trials, and by ‘we’ we mean Emberlin because Kaitlin is canonically terrible at history and also still hasn’t learned her lesson with audiobooks. We may or may not prove that the teacher who accused us of cheating in high school right, the scary times of living during a time when when people were getting accused of witchcraft and our final high school memory of a terrible night that allegedly happened!
