A Sonoma County program has gained national attention for

helping inmates with mental illness be able to stand trial.

In Sonoma County, as elsewhere, jails increasingly serve as

mental health facilities. In its yearly report, the Sonoma County Grand Jury

commended a county jail program that has gained national attention for positive

effects on prisoners’ mental health. Sonoma West Editor Laura Hagar Rush spoke

with KRCB News Director Steve Mencher about the grand jury’s findings.

In its yearly report, the Grand Jury found that the Behavioral Health Division of the county was not only over budget but lacked policies and procedures for fiscal responsibility. Sonoma West Editor Laura Hagar Rush recently wrote about the Grand Jury report.
