Sonoma County residents celebrated their community’s

agricultural roots over the weekend.

The theme of this year’s 83rd annual Sonoma County Fair is

“back to our roots in cowboy boots.” It’s meant to celebrate the region’s long

history in agriculture. In the signature event on Sunday, wranglers drove a

herd of cattle through downtown Santa Rosa. KRCB’s Adia White was there.

Sonoma County fairgoers didn’t let the violence in Dayton,

El Paso and Gilroy discourage them.

Despite the atrocities in Ohio and Texas over the weekend,

families at the Sonoma County Fair didn’t let hatred and violence ruin their

traditions. Fair organizers had already made plans to bolster security after

the deadly shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. KRCB news director, Steve

Mencher, talked with families waiting in the security line and exploring the

fairgrounds on Sunday. He shares both their excitement and concern.

Safety along the SMART train corridor is a top concern this

summer.

Five people have been killed by the SMART train since June,

three are believed to have died by suicide. County leaders are now looking for

ways to improve safety for a complicated problem. Sonoma County Supervisor

Shirlee Zane has served on the SMART board for ten years. KRCB’s Adia White

spoke with her about possible solutions.

a back seat to any other health condition.

Sonoma County Supervisor Shirlee Zane spoke with News

Director Steve Mencher recently about a group she has formed to meet with

Kaiser Permanente CEO, Bernard Tyson. The group is made up of families who say

they have been failed by Kaiser’s mental health care. They are demanding

improvements.

A Sonoma County program has gained national attention for

helping inmates with mental illness be able to stand trial.

In Sonoma County, as elsewhere, jails increasingly serve as

mental health facilities. In its yearly report, the Sonoma County Grand Jury

commended a county jail program that has gained national attention for positive

effects on prisoners’ mental health. Sonoma West Editor Laura Hagar Rush spoke

with KRCB News Director Steve Mencher about the grand jury’s findings.
