In our world with modern technology and social media, it’s hard not to compare ourselves with others. We get trapped in this temptation to feel perfect. It’s dangerous and soon turns into us wanting more and more. It’s never enough. We want to feel recognized and significant. Lies and more temptations start to form. We get so caught up in pursuing these things, that we miss out on the small joys of life. When we fall into this temptation, there is always a price to pay. We turn further away from God. Rejection is tough. We all want to be liked. We want to please the people around us. We want to feel accepted. Sometimes people even pretend to be someone they aren’t and compromise their own standards. Then they don’t even know who they are anymore. The more we long to please people, the more we say yes. We become blinded to the things right in front of us and hurt the people we love the most. When we start to submit to the people around us for acceptance, then our focus is no longer on God. When we’re younger, the load we carry is light and virtually care free. But as we get older, the load gets heavier and heavier. We all carry an invisible “backpack of our past”. It contains your biggest regrets, greatest mistakes and all of the shame that you hide. Deep down, if you’re honest, you believe that your past defines you. Your past disqualifies you and determines your worth. You will never be more than your greatest mistake. How can you possibly be loved or worth loving? The feeling or voice in your life that is telling you this, isn’t God’s voice. His voice is incapable of telling you these things.
