Not in a Huff with Jackson Huff

This week we head to Washington DC and speak with retired White House Press Corp member about his decades in covering the US President. Chris Carlson was a cameraman for a major broadcast network and covered every President from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump (that is SIX!). He tells us his favorite stories interacting with the leader of the free world, his favorite President, and his least favorite (might surprise you). This was an amazing conversation and a fun one whether your political or not. What a career!

This week I speak with an accomplished author with 14 published books and counting. We talk about the writing process, what got her started, and what the future holds. That future includes going to high school as Shanti Hershenson has done all this at just 14 years old and in eighth grade! This was such an inspiring conversation with a young person already achieving great things with so much potential to achieve more in life. Whether you are a book lover or not the energy and passion she has is easy to see and makes for a fantastic interview.

This episode I hop back on the road and speak with travelers Sinclair and Miles. While they are nomads in a moving home much like an earlier episode their perspective on it all is a bit different. We talk about their conversion of a former Philadelphia Airport shuttle bus into their traveling home on wheels, how traveling as a couple in a 100 square space can come with benefits as well as challenges, and advice they have for others looking to join the journey. This was a fun one whether you want to get on the road or stay firmly parked in your non-moving home.

This week we dive into a world I actually know a little bit about and bring Jeff and Jamie of the YouTube channel "Foster the Meeple" to the table to talk about the world of board gaming. We talk about how they got into the hobby, how it became deeper than just Monopoly and Clue, and how they eventually decided to share their passion for board games with the world through their YouTube channel. Their channel is all about making the board game community inclusive to any one interested in gaming so they are great people to listen to talk about the hobby whether you are an avid board gamer or someone who has never even rolled a set of dice.

This week we learn about the world of mystery writing from Edgar Award Finalist, Ben Rehder. I grew up reading his book (which are definitely not kids books!). Ben writes two beloved mystery series in the Blanco County series about a Texas Game Warden and the wacky characters in the county getting themselves into quite the predicaments and also the Roy Ballard series which is a bit less wacky but still quite funny about an insurance investigator that gets involved in a lot more than insurance. In this chat he tells us about growing up in Texas, how get got started writing, how the world of getting a novel out there works, and tips for new writers.

This week we take a deep dive into the world of mermaid work. We speak with two "real life" mermaids about what it means to shimmy into a tail and join the party. I first speak with Lily Luna who quit her job as a high school math teacher to be a professional mermaid. We talk about what got her into this work and some funny things that have happened at the mermaid parties she serves (mostly for kids). We also talk about the craftsmanship that goes into these mermaid tails and the high cost that comes with acquiring them. In the second half, I speak with Scarlett Wolf who does mermaid parties as well, but she is also involved in the mermaid pageant world. We talk about what a mermaid pageant even is and what she went through to be crowned Miss Mermaid Texas 2021. This was a fun chat about an underwater world I knew NOTHING about going into it! Give it a listen :)
