After living abroad for more than a decade I can't imagine what my life would have been like if I had stayed in my country of birth. It is now just shy of 4 years since I began posting and more than 6 years since originally embarking on creating Not Your Average Globetrotter. I can say I'm quite proud that I have been able to accomplish the original goal that I set out to do which was to make a difference and help people avoid some of the situations that I dealt with during my dual Italian citizenship process as well as throughout my life as an expat. I've learned a lot and have had a lot of fun... as well as many sleepless nights because of this project of mine.

Life as an expat isn't easy and things aren't always perfect, but I can definitely say it has all been worth it. I feel as though I've not only learned about myself but also about the world around me, and I know there is still plenty more to learn. I genuinely look forward to the progression of the NYAG project and to see where it goes.

Dating in Italy is something that of course many individuals have in mind when moving to Italy to make a new life in Italy for themselves. Living in Italy as a dual citizen expat in Italy has taught me about some of the cultural differences between dating in Italy vs America. Learning about the cultural norms and expectations, going through my own experiences, and hearing about the experiences of others has greatly shaped this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter. I get into a discussion about life in Italy and what I've noticed regarding dating in Italy and how dating has changed over the past couple of decades in the US. Italy is no different and has seen a shift due to the mass adoption of dating apps in Italy. Even with the traditional mentality that can be easily found in Italy, the modern world and modern dating culture has definitely been embraced.

The Italy Green Pass guidelines and future use has been announced. Even though I haven't been the most optimistic regarding what things would be looking like going forward for life in Italy, I was truly hoping the next update on what's going on living in Italy would be that this is finally all over... Unfortunately, we're not out of the woods yet. It has been announced what things will look like in Italy with the new "Italy green pass" at least until the end of 2021 for individuals who would like to take part in events and social activities indoors. It's been interesting to see how these new rules have been put together. Things seem to be a lot less restrictive than what I would have expected in some ways, and I truly hope that the right choices have been made. As time goes on, I'll be keeping a closer eye than usual on the Italy covid updates and the new "vaccine passport"

This is my moving to Italy checklist.... well at least part 1 of it. These are some of the major steps that a person would want to do if they have Italian dual citizenship by descent (via Jure Sanguinis / Jus Sanguinis). Because of cultural/mentality differences, there are various steps that many of us would never even think of doing for their move to Italy from the USA. I receive questions such as "how much does it cost to move to Italy?", "how much money do I need to have to move to Italy?" and "what do I need to do as an Italian citizen after moving abroad to Italy". I also see these questions pop up online frequently that I wanted to address them. While much of this video focuses on the situation for a person of Italian descent who has already gone through the process to get Italian citizenship, there are parts of this process that will share similarities with what any person who is from abroad who wants to live in Italy as an expat and enjoy expat life in Italy. For example, instead of getting an Italian ID, it would be necessary to get a carta di soggiorno.

Living in Italy to enjoy the dolce vita is the dream of many around the world. But, only after moving to Italy is when you truly become acquainted with the realities of expat life in Italy. There are so many wonderful aspects to life in Italy, but when you live in Italy and not just enjoying a vacation in Italy, the daily realities of what things are actually like here become much more noticeable. Does that mean every single aspect of what it's like to live in Italy will affect you? More than likely no... however... It is very much worthwhile to be aware of the situation. Knowing what's happening in Italy will help you to be able to better navigate your move to Italy and everything that comes after that. Even though many people have the desire to live abroad in Italy, it's also important to consider some of the factors why many young... and not so young Italians want to move abroad.

Adam decided with his wife and children to move to Rome Italy to build a new life for themselves seeking what the Mediterranean lifestyle has to offer. Living in Rome Italy didn't go to plan for Adam and his family due to the events of 2020 and Adam eventually being laid off. After that major life change, Adam and his wife decided that they would build a language school as well as a consultancy business. I've found Adam's situation leading him to teaching English and Italian in Italy fascinating and respect how he's been able to take an unexpected turn of events and màke a U-turn and build something else. Italy is often looked at for a very surface-level understanding of what it is actually like to live in Italy. It's true most people around the world only have an interest in knowing as much as what will be relevant for their Italy trip. But Italy has so much more than just the food, wine and travel that it's popular for. Recently, while thinking about this subject and realizing that many of the greatest "Italian" accomplishments and contributions to the world are mostly from before Italy was what we know today. This leads me back to questions I've been thinking about for years... What is Italian? What does it mean to be Italian? As well as the discussion around what it means to be Italian American vs Italian. If so many "Italian" accomplishments occurred before Italy was "Italy"... then what is the definition? What do you need to do before you move abroad? I've been receiving more messages recently from people who are thinking about moving abroad and I wanted to respond to an Instagram message I received asking about the top 5 things to do before you move to Italy. Because many of the tips I would share would be the same as I would give to anyone wanting to move to another country and live abroad... I also mixed in some stories that I've never shared before in an expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter. When planning to move abroad there's a lot that unfortunately gets overlooked and while some of these tips may seem elementary, they can make all the difference when preparing to move abroad, move to Italy, move to Portugal or a move to anywhere in the world. Is it hard to move to another country? In fact, it can be, but by taking care of the basics before arriving and building a foundation can help your transition into expat life and living abroad go much more smoothly. Am I saying that I did everything on this list or had things perfectly ready for myself before coming to live in Italy? No, what I'm saying is that in an ideal situation, these all would be worth taking care of ahead of time and make this so much easier in the long run.

I often receive messages from individuals who want to buy a house in Italy and want to move to Italy or buy a home in Italy to be able to rent out as an Airbnb / Holiday Rental. Recently I received an email that summed up a number of these questions from an Italian-Canadian thinking about purchasing property in Italy to be able to live in Italy part-time.
