In 2015 a film called The Revenant was released, about a man who was attacked by a bear and left for dead by his fellow trappers in a harsh, empty landscape. The ferocity of the bear was violent, graphic and intense and all based on a true story. The story of Hugh Glass, a larger than life American hero who survived impossible odds, facing starvation, death and violence, but managed to tell his tale.

The Japanese occupation of Korea lasted from 1910 to 1945, in which Japan spent their time systematically wiping out any sort of Korean culture and religious beliefs, stating that the Koreans should follow Japanese culture, traditions and beliefs. This erasure of Korean culture left many Koreans feeling lost and wanting to hold on to something familiar to them. The Korean preacher, Sun Myung Moon started to preach, bringing Christianity slowly back into Korea, despite the protests of Japan.

However, Moon has had his own objectors and those who believed that he wasn’t just preaching the word of God, he was brainwashing and manipulating his followers into spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on artifacts, items that would promise to take away the sins of their ancestors and lead to future good luck. Not to mention the mass weddings that were held, people who would be meeting their future spouse for the first time, some not even speaking the same language.

For many in the United States, the story of the first Thanksgiving often paints a picture of harmony, where the Pilgrims and Native Americans sat down together to share a peaceful meal. This version of history, while widely taught, seems overly idealized when we examine the darker reality of European colonization in the Americas. As we grow older and learn more about the harsh treatment of Native peoples by European settlers, it becomes clear that the cheerful Thanksgiving narrative is a sugar-coated version of the truth. In reality, these disease-ridden Europeans arrived in the Americas, seized land, and wiped out hundreds of thousands of Native Americans through violence, disease, and forced displacement.

They called her the Bitch of Buchenwald, she was Lady Commandant, the wife of the Nazi Commandant Karl Koch. Her and her husband’s crimes were so brutal, that even the Nazis felt that they went over the top in their sadistic cruelty. Ilse in particular was found terrifyingly fascinating, as she allegedly ordered lampshades, book covers and other items to be made out of human skin.

Nazi controlled Germany is full of human atrocities, the T4 Program, the predecessor to the terrible Holocaust, was one of the worst ones. The most vulnerable and helpless people were being targeted. Those who had cognitive disabilities, the elderly, disabled children, mentally ill patients were sent in droves to gas chambers where they were executed silently, quickly, their ashes returned to their families with a death certificate with a fake cause of death listed. The killing of these innocent individuals devolved into them being shot in their beds, killed without any second thought or mercy. The reason that they were targeted? They were seen as undesirables, people who did not belong in the Nazi’s eugenic vision, to the Nazis these people were simply life unworthy of life. But who gets to decide who is worthy of life and who isn’t?

Getty had all the money in the world, yet he refused to pay a single cent to rescue his grandson.

I also discuss the back and forth laws made about allowing gay people and transgender people to serve in the military. While it’s the 2020’s, the LGBTQ community is still fighting for the basic human rights that they deserve.

Homosexuality has been prevalent in humankind since the moment we walked on this earth, but it has taken a long time for society to come to terms with the fact that homosexuality is biological, one does not choose to be gay, they simply are born that way. The United States has a long and terrifying history when it comes to LGBTQ rights.
