1. The newest inflation report is out and it could be the last one for some time. The report is out nine days late because of the shutdown. The government only called workers back to compile this report because this particular inflation report is used to determine the "cost of living adjustment" for social security benefits next year. So, what does it show? It shows the rate of inflation is up. Don't expect the inflation report for November if the government shutdown continues. Today, the White House basically said we won't get it.
2. The NBA says it is cooperating with the investigation into the betting scandal involving celebrities, the mafia and big names in the sport. Miami Heat Guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trailblazers Head Coach Chauncey Billups are both making initial court appearances on Thursday. Former Bucks guard Damon Jones also arrested. Rozier is alleged to have participated in a sports betting ring that used non-public information about NBA players and teams to place fraudulent bets and charged with Conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Same charges for Billups who is alleged to have lured wealthy individuals into participating in rigged poker games with Mafia ties. Jones is tied to both cases.
3. General Motors is cutting jobs, more than 200 to be specific. Workers got the bad news this morning. Auto reporter Jeff Gilbert has the details. GM is trying to re-evaluate its businesses and cut costs to boost profits. These new layoffs represent a small percentage of the company's salaried workforce, but continue a trend of white-collar job reductions.
