  • NH #228: West Lake Nuclear Political Hot Potato - Byron DeLear on Legal Issues, Mimi German on Radiation Monitoring
    THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEWS:
    • Byron DeLear lives within seven miles of the West Lake Landfill.  He has been involved in clean energy issues as chairman and CEO of Energy Equity Funding. He is a columnist with Examiner.com, was founder of Global Peace Solution, and is currently running for state representative.  We talked about the legal situation that makes West Lake ineligible for the federal FUSRAP clean-up program of Superfund sites -- and how that might be turned around.
    • Mimi German is the founder of RadCast, (Radcast.org) which helps citizen activists learn how to take accurate radiation readings, then compiles their data to figure out what's going on – radiologically speaking - wherever the EPA has fallen down on the job… which is just about everywhere.  She can be contacted directly at: [email protected].
    NUMNUTZ OF THE WEEK:

Wanna know how to get around having verifiable radiation readings at a nuclear site?  Don't hire anyone to do the job when your current staff leaves!  Workers, we're not in Kansas any more, but the Wolf Creek nuclear reactor still is!

    THIS WEEK'S NEWS:
    • Entergy announces upcoming closure of Fitzpatrick nuclear reactor in upstate New York when its tank runs empty, er, when it's time to refuel and they won't.
    • Nevada nuke waste dump explosion and fire only 120 miles from Las Vegas and 21 from Nevada test site.
    • EPA admits to shutting off 99 of its only 135 radiation monitors around the country.  If you don't have any data, it can't be contested.  Planned deniability?
    • Explosion and fire at Doel nuclear reactors in Belgium near Antwerp.
    • Fukushima radiation at record highs; exposure to deadly radioactivity could kill a person within one hour.
    • ...and more!

  • NH #226: Pre- and Post-Shutdown Reactor Woes - Turco on Pilgrim, Gilmore, Headrick on San Onofre

    THIS WEEK'S FEATURED INTERVIEWS:

    • Diane Turco, one of the founders of Cape Cod Downwinders, discusses ongoing issues at the Pilgrim Nuclear facility in Massachusetts, which is going to be shut down... by the end of 2019.
    • Donna Gilmore of SanOnofreSafety.org explains what her research has shown about the dangers of the "thin" (tin can) dry casks chosen by utility operator Southern California Edison and the NRC to store San Onofre's deadly radioactive waste.
    • Gary Headrick, c0-founder with his wife Laurie of San Clemente Green, an ecologically-focused group in southern California, looks at the kinds of manipulations the nuclear industry goes through to guarantee profits and negate citizen concerns once a nuclear cash cow reactor is forced to close.  Gary discusses the latest rulings on "spent" fuel rods and fuel assembly storage at the San Onofre site, as decided by the California Coastal Commission just two weeks ago, on October 5.

NUMNUTZ OF THE WEEK: Mobile Chernobyl in miniature as a drilling company searches over 18 counties in two states to find a missing radioactive piece of equipment -- you think we can trust them with high level nuclear waste on our highways? PLUS THE WEEK'S NEWS: St. Louis West Lake landfill fire draws mainstream media attention as residents struggle to cope with the implications for their lives; Japan recognizes its first case of cancer in a Fukushima worker - they've ignore all the other cases; EPA's Radnet radiation monitors continue to be down and unable to measure radiation exposures; and bill filed to protect Grand Canyon watershed.
