Nuclear Hotseat

Word directly from two who are leading the legal battle against NY state's billion dollar bailout of four failing, unprofitable nuclear reactors.

Susan H. Shapiro is an New York State attorney whose practice focuses on environmental protection and land use in the Hudson Valley.

Tim Judson has been Executive Director of Nuclear Information and Resource Service, or NIRS, since 2014.

NUMNUTZ OF THE WEEK - Hanford site in southeastern Washington state is leaking plutonium and americium, internal contamination confirmed in 31 workers and counting -- so is this any time for a federal budget that CUTS BACK on clean-up funds?

Karen Nickel (l) and Dawn Chapman (r) of Just Moms StL
in video mere moments after EPA's announcement of the West Lake Landfill clean-up plan

This Week's Featured Interview:

• Dawn Chapman and Karen Nickel are two North St. Louis mothers who discovered the fact of WWII radioactive atomic weapons waste illegally buried in a neighborhood landfill.  They founded the group Just Moms StL and shepherded the protests by friends and neighbors to radioactive waste in the neighborhoods, the back yards, even inside the houses where others in their community live. With this week's monumental EPA announcement, nobody better to comment on what it all means... and where the battle for the clean-up turns next.  You didn't think it was over, did you???
• LINK to EPA site to make your comments on West Lake Landfill known during the 45-day comment period:  https://www.epa.gov/mo/forms/west-lake-landfill-public-comment-period

• Atomic Homefront, the HBO documentary on the West Lake Landfill, premieres on Monday, February 12 at 5:00pm Pacific time, and on demand as of Tuesday, February 13.

Numnutz of the Week (for Outstanding Nuclear Boneheadedness):

Henry Kissinger?!?!?????  (And this one contains a moment of prescience - I SWEAR I did not know about Trump's call for a parade when I recorded it!)

Impact of atomic bomb detonation and resulting fireball on the human body.
You can't "duck and cover" from that.  LINK to full film below.

This Week's Featured Interview:

• Bo Jacobs is a Professor at the Hiroshima Peace Institute and author of the recent Truth-out.org article, "We Cannot Survive a Nuclear Apocalypse by Ducking and Covering."  He discusses the recent spate of articles promoting the long-discredited "Duck and Cover" method for "surviving" a nuclear attack and analyzes the psychology behind this misleading bit of pro-nuclear propaganda.
• Duck and Cover - see and hear the propaganda film we were talking about:
• And here's the footage of the atomic canon being fired over the Nevada desert that Bo discussed.  The device exploded the same 15 kilotons as was dropped on Hiroshima:

Numnutz of the Week (for Outstanding Nuclear Boneheadedness):

Do you actually need any other explanation of why transporting highly radioactive nuclear reactor waste over the roads is not a good idea?  (HINT:  No other transport method is much better.)

The Missing Links:

• The Japanese Government Is Lying to the International Community: the Radiological Situation in and around Fukushima is NOT Safe - Appeal from Japanese Anti-Nuclear activist Etsuji Watanabe
• Tokyo Not Fit For Human Habitation
• Movie:  "The Day After."  At minimum check out 55:00 - 59:00 for their visualization of a nuclear attack.

Arnie Gundersen, Chief Engineer at Fairewinds Energy Education, focuses on the human toll inflicted by the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. Recorded December 2, 2017, at DePaul University, at an event sponsored by Chicago’s Nuclear Energy Information Service - NEIS.

More on the incompetent Numnutz at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency who were responsible for 38-minutes of HELL when they sent a false "incoming nuclear missile" alert to the entire state and then couldn't recall the message.
