Going straight into the ICU as a new grad can feel somewhat daunting to some. We have instructors telling us that a new grad does not belong in the ICU and must gain experience beforehand. I am here to tell you that is old advice and today new grads are THRIVING in the ICU. This new series "New Grad to ICU" will help fill the gaps that nursing school made in your critical care education and help make your transition to ICU RN a little less intimidating.
In this episode, we go over passing the NCLEX and getting your first job in the ICU. What kind of job should you look for? What do you need to do to make yourself stand out? It is all answered here.

In this episode, we go over what a balloon pump is and what it does for our cardiac patients. Balloon pumps have become more common in many different ICUs and not just the CCUs or CVICUs. This is a great overview of what the balloon pump is and what it does but it is not a replacement for the instruction that you will get in your facility. Always follow your hospital's policy and procedures.

This is all publicly available information but I do not state the RNs name or where this took place. You won't believe some of the things you hear!

In this episode, we dive into what mean arterial pressure actually is and why it is so highly regarded in the ICUs (especially the CVICU!).
In this episode we go over the basics of landing and recovering a patient after they come out from cardiac surgery. This episode gives a nice overview of what to expect in the first shift after OR has been completed. Care varies a lot case by case but the fundamentals usually stay the same. Use this as a backbone and grow your practice from it with personal experience.

In this episode we talk about an algorithm developed in Europe that addresses what should be done if a patient codes following cardiac surgery. It should be noted that this has not been officially adopted by the AHA here in the states but changes to ACLS are currently being looked at. Please consult with your providers and unit leaders before integrating anything into your practice.
