As the sun breaks to a New Year, join Chris and Jonathan as they reminisce on the 365 days colloquially known as Twenty Twenty Two.

What were the standout games we played in 2022? The best releases of 2022? The games we never got round to because we were stuck playing Everybody’s Golf and Monster Hunter respectively? And the games we’re looking forward to in 2023?

2022 may be DEAD, but videogames remain ALIVE AND KICKING.

And so this is Christmas,

And what have you done?

(Other than listen to 50-odd episodes of the O3C Games podcast of course!)

Bezzies Chris and Jonathan get together for a festive celebration, sharing gifts and glad tidings as they unwrap four presents each that have been chosen to fit in with the schema ‘something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read’.

How far have the boys bent the definitions of each category for their videogame themed gifts?

Merry Christmas to you and yours from us at O3C Games. We love you!

Sail the Sunless Sea,
(actually Unterzee),
Here where it’s darker, and light is much starker,
Failure guaranteed!

Then under the sea,
Under the sea,
Moments of quiet, then gatekeeping giants,
An eco-message ‘bout trees!

(Chris and Jonathan report back on saltwater twofer Sunless Sea and The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human)

You know what? I’ve written about 200 of these blurbs now, and I’m reasonably confident no one reads them.

Sometimes I put in little stories and jokes about the games we’ve played like this: Jonathan and Chris do their best to get to grips with the 85th instalment in the venerated Demon Quest franchise, and lose their topsy turvy minds and collective motor faculties as they get to grips with OMAZE, a game quite literally about mazes.. made from ‘O’s.

Sometimes I’m a little more direct: In addition to a Playdate bounty, this week our intrepid podcasters have played Pokemon! Rez Infinite! Jumping Joe! Jumanji! And a few other cranked goods.

But whichever way the copy fairy takes me, I always put the work in, to make sure those who stumble upon this show have a decent idea of what to expect in the episode.

If you’ve read this far, cheers! Come give me a wave on Twitter. You know the handle by now. And if this last line remains, forever truncated in obscurity by the podcast feeds of the world, who cares, eh?

Listen to Chris and Jonathan tackle the following old games:

Jurassic Park, Nintendo Entertainment System, 1993

Jurassic Park: The Lost World Special Edition, Sony Playstation, 1998

Cave Noire, Nintendo Gameboy, 1991 (Fan Translation by Aeon Genesis, 2012)

Good? Bad? Ugly?

Also!

Chris completes Arcade Paradise, listens to dance music, and is rewarded for a speculative purchase made nearly a decade ago. Jonathan rags on Pokémon Flippert and Pokémon Fandango for a long, long time.

The plucky little handheld that could, does and continues to do, delivers two more oddballs this week in the form of Flipper Lifter and Echoic Memory.

Ferry penguins up hand cranked elevators. Restore the memories of sentient boomboxes.

Quite literally, ONLY on Playdate.

PLUS!

More Arcade Paradise, and some Pokémon Upset.

Games are really chuffin’ cool.

On this week’s edition of the O3C Podcast, let us walk you through our experiences with the following very good games.

LUNISTICE
ARCADE PARADISE
TETRIS EFFECT: CONNECTED
BAYONETTA
UNBOX: NEWBIE’S ADVENTURE
MO: ASTRAY

Oh, and Jonathan plays ten minutes of the perfectly-serviceable-but-nothing-special Poi as well.

They can’t all be zingers, right?

Week 3 of the first Playdate Season has us readin’ and rollin’ with Lost Your Marbles, and pickin’ and packin’ with Pick Pack Pup. As a mild spoiler, we enjoyed one of these games much more than the other!

Alongside our Playdate play date, Jonathan bigs up 10 other sideloaded Playdate treats from itch.io, and Chris continues to slather and slobber over the Steam Deck’s myriad uses.

Who’s up for some retro gaming?

Two weeks ago, Chris challenged Jonathan to whack on the Sega Mega Drive twofer, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Quackshot Starring Donald Duck. How did he get on with the in-house, Sega-developed takes on two of Disney’s most enduring characters?

Jonathan asked Chris to give Gameboy Advance powerhouse, first-person shooter Ecks vs. Sever a go. How did he find this early handheld venture into the 3rd dimension?

Also - because there’s always an also - reasonably targeted thoughts on Resident Evil 3 Remake from DUNN, and Effie from DOW.
