Obesity negatively impacts the health of women in many ways; for breastfeeding mothers, obesity has been linked to decreased intention to breastfeed, decreased initiation of breastfeeding, and shorter duration of breastfeeding. While some of these effects may be cultural or related to the mother’s body image, others may be caused by metabolic and hormonal effects of adipose tissue—including decreased milk supply. What can the overweight mother do to ensure she develops a good enough milk supply to meet her baby’s needs? What steps can provide the best health and well-being for her baby? How can she best prepare to meet her breastfeeding goals? But soon after birth, the days are often fraught with sleep deprivation and conflicting messages from peers, family members, and health care professionals. Later, negative messages from the media and critical comments from family members and others may trigger mothers to question their decision. Feelings of inadequacy, intimidation and societal pressure to wean can cause mothers to give up breastfeeding before meeting their goals.
The aim of this show is to empower parents to overcome the barriers that keep them from beginning or continuing to breastfeed.
