A shining example of proletarian leadership, Anne wonderfully proved Mao Zedong’s famous saying that ‘Women hold up half the sky’. Anne Harper (formerly Scargill) was the daughter of a mining trade unionist before she was the wife of one. She became legendary during the great miners’ strike of 1984-5 for her indefatigable organising and leadership of the support movement for the strike, and her activism in defence of British mining and the working-class continued long after the strike’s conclusion.
