What is shame?
Brené Brown, author of Atlas of the Heart (a book we are obsessed with), defines shame as:
Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love, belonging, and connection. It thrives on secrecy, silence, and judgment. If you put shame into a petri dish and douse it with these three things, it will grow exponentially into every corner and crevice of our lives.
In this episode, Lori Weber joins us to share her struggle and her journey in overcoming an eating disorder. Having spent the majority of her adult life in a disordered relationship with food, Lori describes her experience before as less about the food and more about the power food had over her and the way she obsessively behaved around it.
In addition, she pointed out that keeping this secret behavior away from others for decades made it all worse since it contributed to the growing vicious cycle of self-fulfilling judgments.
She successfully released herself from the spiral of shame when she realized that the behavior was separate from what she really is.
Lori is now on a mission to help others avoid the eating chaos she experienced. Her Mindful Eating Clinic, based in the UK, provides coaching and online courses to clients worldwide. She can treat binge-eating, bulimia, yo-yo-dieting, and obesity and is known for her blend of empathy and pragmatism, helping clients find a happy life with food.
