  • New Year New Whatever: ODO 130
Happy New Year 2019!! It’s the first new episode of the year, and that means it’s time to make plans for what I want to do on the show this year that I’ll probably never get to. Plus I’ve got a little tease for some ideas and recommendations coming up this year.

I realize I do this just about every year. Right around new year’s I look back on all of the things I did last year, and all of the things that I want to do in the coming year. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever really kept up any one of those plans, with exception to maybe keeping a more consistent release schedule. I’ve missed only a handful of shows in the last year, which is more than I can say for years past. I may have been late more times than I would have liked, but I got something out.

On top of that, I actually accomplished my goal of completing the 30 days of podcasting for NAPODPOMO. That by itself was a goal of mine after the failure of 2017.

Somehow I also managed to start a business as a podcast editor and develop an interest in doing voiceover. Although I’ve only done minor work as a voice actor, I have had a little success as a podcast editor which I hope to grow in 2019. First step in that is creating my website for ODO Voice Productions which, considering how long it took to build this website, may take some time. But I know it’s necessary. Along with that I’ve got to start formal VO training, which is going to take time and money, but I know it’ll be worth it in the long run.

As for the podcast, besides keeping up my regular release schedule, I would really like to expand the show more and include more guest spots. My goal is to have a guest at least once a month going forward. I planned to start this in December, but holiday schedules are quite the pain. Since I’m not a great interviewer, I lean more toward the Nerdist/ ID10T method of just having a conversation with people for sheer enjoyment of the conversation. I’d also like to be a guest on more podcasts myself, which again takes time, but is always quite a lot of fun to do.

I also want to do more extra stuff for my Patreon supporters. Over the holidays I released a reading of myself doing “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas” which I really enjoyed. I would like to do more things like that for those people who are awesome enough to support the show financially.

I have a bunch of podcasts that I want to share with you for 2019, but not as many as you may have to share with me. Going forward I want to turn this segment into more of a traditional review/ feature segment. And I want you to tell me what you’re listening to. What do you think I should check out. I’ve been telling you what to listen to for long enough. I want you to expand this segment beyond my taste and into that of the people who seem to enjoy my ramblings.
Send me your recommendations. Whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, e-mail, carrier pigeon…
I want to know what you want me to listen to

  • Plethora of Perplexus: ODO 129
Happy holidays to you. This week I’ve got a tale of too many “Perplexi,” an oddly large number of humorous news stories about guns, a “Jackass” who wants to trade pot for a Big Mac, and I don’t care if Paul Csomo already mentioned it, in “Recommended Listening” I’m talking about Weird With You.

Hope you had a great holiday, whatever holiday you celebrate. For us that would be Yule, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t give presents. But when you’ve got 4 boys who get jealous of everything, you have to have a strategy. For example, buying them all different versions of the same toy.
In our case that toy would be the Perplexus. If you haven’t seen one, a Perplexus is a 3 dimensional puzzle, usually within a sphere, where the goal is to move a ball from a starting point through 100+ turns and obstacles to the end without falling off the track. Just because it’s labeled ages 8 and up, this is no easy task, and once you start playing you will get sucked in to the game by sheer frustration… We bought 4. Not only did we buy 4, but we bought 4 different versions. We got the Original, the Epic, the Mini Twist, and the World’s Smallest Perplexus, which is an original that is about the size of a tennis ball. And every single one has had everybody in the house occupied since opening them up.

In an attempt to change American’s culture of using guns, one New York town has started a program to buy back toy guns in exchange for other toys. They feel that if they get the kids to stop using toy guns, that they wont want to use real guns later.

-Florida Man Tries To Trade Weed For McDonald’s
While going through the drive thru of his local McDonald’s, a 23 year old man attempted to pay for his food with a bag of marijuana.
Apparently he thinks that Florida is still under the barter system.
He returned later that day, supposedly with cash, and was later arrested based on employee descriptions.

  • Sugar Cookies and Christmas Songs ODO 128
It’s almost Christmas. Why not add a little holiday cheer to the show. Gareth’s Random Ramblings is doing their annual Christmas series, and we even got into the spirit this weekend decorating gingerbread houses. Of course I’ve still got a “Jackass of the Week” that throws all that holiday spirit out the window.

This year my wife decided that we should try to do some more traditional things for the holidays.
As such, my wife decided that we were going to decorate gingerbread houses and sugar cookies. I’m not necessarily against decorating cookies. But I do have a thing about gingerbread houses.
I just don’t understand the point of decorating food that you really have no intention of eating. Decorating fresh gingerbread cookies or fresh baked sugar cookies I’m ok with, but to spend all that time to decorate a bunch of stale semi-gingerbread sheets glued into house form just to sit on a shelf and get thrown away… I’m not a fan.
I want to eat my cookies not look at them.

    -Gareth’s Random Ramblings

"A weekly podcast in which we, Gareth and Bex, discuss everything. And we mean everything. We have discussed topics as far and wide as celebrity news, and celebrity deaths; our wedding, and our miscarriages; from our new cars to our old friends, all while cracking jokes and basically trying to have fun in each others company."

In honor of the 12 Days of Christmas, Gareth and Bex have been doing their annual “12 Days of Podcasts” where they keep things family friendly. They play holiday trivia and games and each night they end the show with one of them singing a Christmas song.

    -Jackass Of The Week-
Rather than having a single weird news story this week. Instead, the Jackass of the Week is going to the creators of Fortnite for ripping off dances from people. They are currently being sued by the “backpack kid” who popularized the dance known as “the Floss,” Alfonso Ribeiro over “the Carlton,” and rapper 2 Milly. They also got heat from Donald Faison over the use of his Turk dance from “Scrubs.” Of course technically none of these people own a copyright to these dances, if you even can, but they are all dances that are synonymous with those people. It’s not really about the fact that they didn’t have permission to use the dances. To me at least, it’s the fact that they didn’t even ask some of them. And they didn’t tell them that those dances would be sold in the game.

  • Stayin' Alive, Even If It Kills Me: ODO 127
This week I find myself in a sea of parents at one of the most uncomfortable events of the year... Children's winter concerts. Throwing the season out the window, in Recommended Listening I've got a new take on a horror movie podcast with "Kim and Ket Stay Alive... Maybe." And I wrap it all up with a failed marriage between a woman... and a ghost.

    -Recommended Listening-
Kim and Ket Stay Alive... Maybe
    http://www.kimandketstayalive.com/

What do you get when two best friends, and horror movie fans, convince themselves that they would definitely be ‘the final girl’ at the end of the movie and never be the girl running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door? You get Kim and Ket Stay Alive…Maybe. Each episode, Kim Burns and Ketryn Porter choose a different horror film, and through very scientific (not scientific), totally indisputable (very disputable) methods, and amidst hilarious tangents about their personal lives, they determine whether they would be the ones to stay alive at the end.

An Irish woman, who has claimed to have married the ghost of a 300 year old pirate, has announced that they have split up.

Personally, I think the bit about him being dead for 300 years would have split them up in the first place, but hey it's 2018!

  • I'm Officially A Dad: ODO 126
I'm back to "normal" with this week's show where I talk about my new status of being "officially" a Dad, and it revolves around lights. This week's featured podcast brings the 4th appearance of John Buckenas, 2nd for Jessica Kupferman, and Recommended Listening debut of Melissa Brilliant with their show "Brilliant Observations." And it all wraps up with a Jackass of The Week involving a woman who just wanted to buy some Pringles. Or did she?

  • Day 30 #NAPODPOMO Extra Super Special Guest Heather Welch
It's Friday November 30th, the final day of National Podcast Post Month. And to close things out, I decided to have my very best pod-friend, Extra Super Special Guest, Heather Welch from "Sunshine and Powercuts" on for little other reason than just that I love talking with her. Of course there are a few cases of kids and dog interference, but what would this show be without those sort of things? It is always so great to get to talk with Heather. She is such a sweet person. Why the hell is she friends with me? I still don't get it, but I'm glad to have her in my life.

  • Day 29 #NAPODPOMO I Just About Did It
Thursday Day 29 and I've just about done it. I wanhted to do a big clip show at the end of this, but that's just too much work. Instead I'm just looking back at how much I've grown in the last month of daily shows. Although it's a tough thing to accomplish, I think this could be a great training exercise for any newbie podcaster to fast track growing their skills.

Very special thank you to all of you who have supported me through this whole month, especially: Paul Csomo, Derek Graziano, Chris Osborne, and Heather Welch. You guys are amazing.

  • Day 28 #NAPODPOMO Making Mac and Cheese
Wednesday Day 28 and we're making mac and cheese.

    Here's what you'll need:

    1 Link Smoked Sausage- cubed
1 lb Macaroni Pasta of Your Choice

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, cubed
    2 heavy Tbs Flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    Dash pepper
    2 cups whole milk
8 ounces ( 1/2 lb) FRESHLY SHREDDED Cheddar Cheese

    - Boil your pasta (duh)

-While pasta is boiling, brown your sausage in an extra large sauce pan or pot, remove sausage from pan and set aside
    - In sausage pan, melt your butter and whisk together with sausage drippings
    - Once butter is melted, whisk in your flour until thoroughly combined
-After flour is integrated, slowly whisk in your milk, giving it time to completely absorb into the flour butter mix before adding more. It will go from a paste to more of a gravy consistency.
-After all the milk is thoroughly mixed in, slowly whisk in your cheese in small handfulls, making sure to allow it to completely melt and integrate before adding more to the pan.
-After all of the cheese is added and melted, reintroduce the sausage to the mix and stir.

-Pour your cheese/ sausage mix over the top of your drained pasta and stir carefully to coat all of your pasta.
-Let it rest for about 5 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken and cool. (It will be SUPER HOT)

    Serve and enjoy.

    -

Here's a basic similar recipe that doesn't include the sausage.
