  • Taking a Leap and Nerding Out: ODO 120
With all the nerdery in the news this week, I decided to take a break from my normal ramblings and nerd out a little bit. This week saw trailers dropped for the upcoming Disney sequel, "Mary Poppins Returns." We also got the first trailer for the next film from Marvel studios, "Captain Marvel." And finally we got an announcement that Netflix would be working with the show's original creators to make a live-action series of "Avatar: The Last Air Bender." I take a small sidebar to inform you of a tragedy that struck a podcasting brother in the form of Hurricane Florence. And last but certainly not least, in Recommended Listening, I actually talk about a show that I edit. (No I'm not being paid to do it either.) This week's feature goes to "Leap Like Me" with Lisa Hoashi.

  • I Don't Care If My Voice Is Shot: ODO 119
Hey! I'm here this week and I sound like complete crap. Long story short, I've been sick, but I didn't want to miss another week. That being said, it's a shorter show. No Jackass of the Week, but I do get into what's had me so busy recently and what I really do love about being a podcast editor. Plus I wrap up with the week's Recommended Listening feature, Play Comics.

  • A Friendly Troll, Bad Cops, and A Rough Giraffe: ODO 118
Another week, another show where I don't have a jumping off point. But that quickly takes a turn into my revelation that, when it comes to my friendships, I'm kind of a troll. But I'm a friendly troll. In a long overdue Recommended Listening, this week I'm talking about the Rough Giraffe Podcast. And finally, the Jackass of the Week brings us a couple of Detroit police precincts who really need a lesson in communication.

"Join Mum and Stacey for a quirky comedy podcast full of stories, facts and a wonky cat!"

Take 1 part "Varmints," 1 part "The Story Behind," add a fist full of zany and a "wonky" cat and you get Rough Giraffe. I will admit that I was never really interested in this show. I had heard the name dropped several times in podcasting groups and on other podcasts, but I never really knew what it was, or what it was about. Man, am I kicking myself now. Stacey and "Mum" provide a plethora of useful facts and trivia, and a splash of history to even the silliest of topics. I have learned things about penises, bellybuttons, and brains that I never really wanted to know, but it's cool that I know now. Of course they don't just cover anatomy. They also cover everything from marriage to pets and anything in between with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Absolutely hilarious, and a must listen for just about anybody. But you may want to send your kids to the other room.

    https://www.upi.com/Undercover-Detroit-police-attempt-to-arrest-each-other-in-embarassing-drug-bust/8361510804710/

Two Detroit area police precincts became caught up in a violent, yet hilarious, case of mistaken identity and miscommunication. When officers from Detroit's 12th precinct set up a sting operation posing as drug dealers, the last thing they expected was that the "drug buyers" that arrived would be undercover officers from the 11th precinct doing a similar operation. When more officers from the 11th precinct arrived to serve a search warrant, the scene turned into a full blown brawl between the two sets of officers.

  • What's Falling Out Of My Head: ODO 117
This week's show comes as a direct side effect of my recent foray into professional podcast editing. Long story short, I have been using a new program for editing podcasts, but I had yet to try recording an episode on it. I literally just sat down and started talking. Of course whenever I do an audio test I start with the opening of the show, and it just progressed from there.
You could say that this whole episode is as old school ODO as it gets. I had little if any idea what I was talking about, and I let my train of thought run off the tracks more times than I can remember. Considering I forget almost everything I say during an episode almost as soon as I press stop on the recording, that's saying something. What I do know is that I get into the reasons why I took a week off from the show, the growth of the ODO VP brand, and my insecurities about the overall value of the show to the listeners.

For me, more than all the news and ramblings, the most important part of the show is the Recommended Listening segment. I personally feel like that is the one segment of the show that has any real value to my listeners beyond just listening to me rant about life. As much as this has always been a very personality driven podcast (not that I've got a lot of that,) I take a certain amount of pride in the podcast features I do. As I've said before, my recommendations aren't for sale. I only ever talk about shows I actually enjoy and listen to. Yes, some have fallen off of my regular listening habits, but that is more on account of me listening to even more shows. But above all, everything I say about a podcast is honest and genuine. I tell you why I listen to the shows and what get me hooked, but I also point out anything that I may not be a fan of on a show. I don't give "reviews" I do features. Yes, I know it's a matter of semantics, but that's not the point. The point is, if I don't actually listen to a show and enjoy, I'm not going to talk about it. That to me is the only thing of value I actually provide in this show. So I have felt lately like I am short changing the little bit of an audience I have as I have not had a real Recommended Listening feature in about a month.

Along those lines, sometimes I feel like maybe I should stop doing this podcast and try to do something with a little more substance to it. I genuinely would like to start doing that interview show that I discussed a while back, but I simply do not have the time. Between my night job, my kids, dad chores, podcasting, and podcast editing, sometimes even I wonder how I do it.

Ya know what's funny? I know I missed about 90% of what I actually talk about in this thing. Good luck!

  • I'm Bad At Friends: ODO 116
This week I've got a quick-ish spot about the recent storm that hammered my neighborhood. In place of a full feature, for Recommended Listening I mention a couple shows I've just started listening to that will get a future feature. I've got a "Jackass" who's affair cost him millions. And I ramble on about my recent epiphany that I'm really just not very good with friends.

    http://www.odditycentral.com/news/texas-man-has-to-pay-8-8-million-for-seducing-another-mans-wife.html

A Texas man has been ordered to pay $8.8 million after being sued for "alienation of affection," or in other words, having an affair with a married woman. After meeting the woman at a BMX stunt bike show put on by her husband, the pair had a lengthy affair which was frequently disguised as business trips or spa vacations paid for by the woman's husband. North Carolina law allows a person to sue someone for knowingly engaging in an extramarital affair.

  • Brown Skies, Back to School, and Books: ODO 115
Another week, another dust storm. Of course it happened right after I washed my van. It's the last week of Summer vacation before my boys go back to school and, as usual, the school supply list is utterly ridiculous. But we did seem to find a new tool to try and make our boys behave in the form of Lego Harry Potter. Plus, the launch of "Mole Hole Talk Radio." The release of The Story Behind book. I'm thinking about starting another podcast with interviews. And the proper return of the "Jackass of the Week" with a man too cheap to pay for a car wash.

  • Summer Vacation and The Return of Sunshine: ODO 114
I'm back from our regular summer vacation, and I think I need another one. We always a good time, but, let's just put it this way, would you want to spend 20 hours in a van with 4 screaming boys? But now it's time to get back to work, back to business, and back to talking about myself because that's what I do here. Well, not just about myself. It's also time for another Sunshine Summit!

    -Summer Vacation
This year was the smoothest, most efficient summer vacation we've had since moving to Arizona. My wife started planning the hotels back in January and this year we've finally found the best hotel that suits our needs. As a family of 4, we just have to have a suite with a full living room and kitchen in order to keep our sanity.
The drive back to Texas was seriously the smoothest it's ever been. When we drive to Texas, we actually do it all in a single trip without any overnight stays. My wife and I just keep switching drivers while the other rests. This year we went for a little different plan. I drove in the big cities and overnight, and she drove the open roads during the day. This actually left us with a pretty even spread of time. I actually stopped to take a nap at some rest stops a couple times, but I never got so tired that I felt like we were in danger, which has happened in the past. Other than that we stopped for major meals and kept on trucking.
We did all the same things we always do. We visited our families. My stepmom insisted we all go to Peter Piper Pizza. We went to the Texas State Aquarium. We drove around to see what things have changed. It's the same things we do every year, but this year seemed must less stressful. Maybe it's because we are in such a good place financially this time. For the first time ever, we actually didn't come home broke. In fact, we actually came back with extra money left over.
It's taken nearly 10 years, but we've finally gotten our family vacation dialed in. In a couple more years we wont even need to pack a diaper bag. here's looking forward to next year's vacation going just as smooth.

    -Jackass Of The Week-
Whoever Designed the Freeways In Texas Cities
Instead of pulling up a story from the news to make rip into, I'm just gonna go with a serious gripe I have with my vacation back to Texas every year. The design of the freeway systems in the major cities in Texas is utterly retarded. Never mind that they are perpetually under construction with no real progress or signs of any actual improvements over the last 8 years. Scratch that. Make it 20 years. The freeway systems and roads themselves make no logical sense. Frequently, ramps exiting the freeway lead directly into ramps entering the freeway with less than a quarter mile of space for the cross traffic to avoid crashing into each other. Oh and the on-ramps themselves have such short merge lanes that many times cars have to stop on the ramps or in the travel lanes of the freeway to allow cars to enter and merge into traffic or avoid collisions.
Add to that the fact that all of the freeways have active businesses and shopping areas running along them and use the frontage roads as major streets. And of course these businesses are all the ones that you are trying to get to: grocery stores, gas stations, shopping malls, hotels. So when you are trying to get in and out of these businesses you are having to fight with all of the traffic trying to get on and off the freeway. On top of all of that, the cities are designed in a way that practically forces you into using those freeways to get anywhere because of how the cities are laid out. Of course the roads themselves aren't actually capable of handling the heavy load of traffic and so you may spend hours on the road and maybe only move 2 miles. I all but refuse to drive at certain times of the day while I'm visiting my dad. It's not worth the stress. Oh, and did I mention just about every road is in need of repair and cleanup?

  • Unicorns and Dust Storms: ODO 113
I'm in the final stretch leading in to our summer vacation and what do I do? I spend half the show talking about the weather. Summertime in Arizona means monsoons which means dust storms and thunderstorms. Funny thing is, we always seem to have stormy weather on our vacations. Of course it's not all about the weather. This week is my wife's birthday. Since her birthday is on a weekday, we decided to throw her a faguely Lisa Frank themed party over the weekend, complete with rainbow unicorn balloons.
For Recommended Listening, I went back to a previously featured show that just came back from hiatus. The gang from PreRecorded Live is back and are just as silly as ever.

  • 4th of July and Jerkface Neighbors: ODO 112
This week for episode 112: In Recommended Listening I got to be a guest host for episode 40 of the Second Press Podcast, and I've got a jackass with fishy feet, but let's not forget what holiday just passed, I've gotta talk about my 4th of July.

Happy Independence Day to all my American listeners! And to everybody else, hey! So once again I'm running behind this week, but in this case it can be directly related to the holiday. Long story short, since my wife was home, she decided we needed to spend the day being more productive and preparing for our upcoming vacation. Of course this meant cleaning, and going through lists, and shopping for the things missing from those lists.
But, let's not forget the fireworks. What is the 4th of July without fireworks? At this point in my life, less stressful. There has been a big movement in recent years to remind people that, in general, dogs and cats DO NOT like fireworks. This goes for my 10ish year old Labrador /Dalmatian, Emmitt, with gusto. He isn't a big fan of most noises, big or small, so the giant unseen kaboom from our local Independence Day celebration has him barking his head off. On top of that, the entire ruckus scares my 4 year old, who wakes up crying until it's over. Of course, it's not that simple because our new neighbors came to acquire some fireworks of their own, and they kept up their personal show until nearly 11 o'clock at night. So who is left sitting up late trying to calm a 2 and 4 year old and a 90 lb. dog? This guy!

Fish Pedicure Causes Woman To Lose Toenails
    https://gizmodo.com/a-woman-lost-her-toenails-after-a-fish-pedicure-1827314989/amp

An unnamed woman appears to have lost her toenails after having a controversial Chinese beauty treatment that consists of tiny fish eating away the dead skin from the bottoms of her feet. According to her doctors, the treatment caused damage to the nail matrix, and her nails stopped growing and eventually fell off.

That's what you get for getting a pedicure from fish. This procedure is actually banned in at least 10 states for health reasons. The tubs and fish are reused for multiple people which can lead to serious risk of cross contamination. The few salons that offer this procedure claim that they sanitize the tubs and fish after every client, but how do you sanitize a fish? Seriously, what would make you think that this is safe by any means? There's a legitimate reason why this is banned in 10 states. And, not to throw shade at China, but they do a lot of things over in China and Japan that are just bad ideas. And, I don't care how popular it may seem, this is a classic example of, "if everyone else jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?"

  • Sometimes I Just Ramble: ODO 111
I've been so busy with podcast editing and working on business stuff that I just did not do much for news research this week. So I decided that I'm going to jump to the new format starting this week. At the same time, I have no clue what to talk about this week. It's a good old fashioned random rambling. I get into my struggle with not buying new recording equipment, my attempt at a work/work/life balance, sacrificing sleep to get more work done and how I've always just run that way. I get interrupted by Sam deciding to change his name for a few minutes, and I get mildly philosophical about my views on calling myself selfless. So much crazy stream of consciousness this week. I get geeky with this week's Recommended Listening feature, the Sometimes Geek podcast, and declare a bunch of health conscious festival goers the Jackass of the Week.
