Are you making decisions based on where you're going... or based on what happened to you before?
In Episode 41 of Off-Limits, I start with something surprisingly simple: a dating profile that made me wonder whether we sometimes think we're communicating our standards when we're actually communicating our wounds.
But this episode isn't really about dating.
It's about how we're living.
Whether you're single, married, starting over, navigating a career change, rebuilding after disappointment, or simply trying to figure out your next chapter, we all carry pieces of our past into our present.
The question is:
Is your past teaching you... or is it quietly running the show?
I also get personal about the ending of a relationship with someone I genuinely cared about. There was no villain. No betrayal. No dramatic ending. Just two good people trying to determine whether the lives they were individually building could truly become one.
And it made me wonder:
Can a relationship still be successful even if it ends?
We talk about trusting your intuition versus overthinking, the power and occasional ache of singlehood, building your “empire” while still leaving room for someone else, and the difference between carrying baggage forward and carrying wisdom.
Because healing doesn't mean pretending something didn't hurt.
It means becoming conscious enough that what happened to you doesn't unconsciously decide what happens next.
And this isn't just about romantic relationships.
Where are old hurts influencing your marriage, friendships, career, opportunities, or the way you see yourself?
Are your standards rooted in self-worth... or have some become armor?
Are you staying because something is right for you... or because you're afraid of what happens if you let it go?
Are you responding to what's actually happening today... or to something that happened years ago?
And maybe the biggest question:
If the thing you've been asking for showed up tomorrow, are you actually ready to receive it... or are you still protecting yourself from what happened before?
Your past gets to teach you.
It doesn't get to drive you.
Take the lesson. Keep the wisdom. Leave the bitterness.
Date from hope.
Love from hope.
Build from hope.
Lead from hope.
And most importantly... live from hope.
Because nothing is off-limits when you're living on purpose.
