In October 2018, four years after shooting and killing 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, former Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was convicted guilty of second-degree murder and sixteen counts of aggravated violence with a firearm. He was sentenced to only six years and nine months in jail in January 2019. While the punishment is obviously lenient in light of the multitude of offences committed, what little justice was being served came to an end this week when officials revealed that Van Dyke will be freed early after completing less than half of his term. Now, campaigners are pushing for the federal prosecution of this murdered officer.

Clifford Owensby of Dayton, Ohio, discovered the American police state's willingness to go to violent and oppressive lengths to enforce window tint extortion laws. James Williams, 46, spent his last seconds on Earth trying to figure out who shot him at his family's New Year's party. The family would eventually learn that a Canton police officer took aim as Williams stood on the opposite side of his private fence, in his own back yard, and shot and killed this unarmed father of six. However, there is one feature of Rittenhouse's trial that we would want to highlight, and that is the rapidity with which it transpired. Rittenhouse avoided incarceration for most of the period after the shooting and will now remain a free man for the remainder of his years. Others, on the other hand, have not had such expedited trials or attracted the attention of billionaire political blowhards eager to pay their bail.  Marvin Guy is one of these individuals, and if Kyle Rittenhouse can be granted such a rapid trial in the middle of this media blitz, there is no reason Guy should not be granted the same treatment.

O'Shae Terry and a buddy were stopped by Arlington police officer Julie Herlihy in September 2018 because Terry's temporary tag had expired. Officer Bau Tran would also react to the stop and would shoot and murder Terry 10 minutes later. The Fifth Circuit Appeals Court has now given Tran qualified immunity on the grounds that leaping onto a moving automobile and murdering the driver is "reasonable."

Cops who expose departmental misconduct and work to avoid violence often find themselves on the receiving end of this judicial system, condemned for doing the right thing. This retribution against officers for revealing corruption inside their units refutes the "one bad apple" idea totally. Is it "one rotten apple" if a whole department tries to snub an officer for doing the right thing?  Police in Joliet Sgt. Javier Esqueda is an excellent officer. We can say this with confidence since he demonstrated it by refusing to remain quiet about suspected illegal activities committed by his fellow officers and risking his job and now his freedom in order to shed light on the matter. He thought enough was enough after seeing a video of his fellow police seem to choke a guy who ultimately died. His other cops restrained Eric Lurry while he was handcuffed, suffocated him, struck him, and jammed a baton into his mouth moments before he died.
