Oh My Word!

Sometimes a good book makes a good film, and sometimes a good film can have a star-studded cast and not incapacitate our pearl clutching scale! (Well, almost.) Moneyball, based on the book by Michael Lewis, is the story of one baseball manager making good--and until then, unusual--use of baseball's myriad statistics to put together a winning team.

Based on the book when Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon, Mismatched is a teen Rom-Com set in India, and centers around a boy who's looking for romance and his attraction to a girl who's looking to build a career in apps. Although the setting is new, many plot lines are familiar as the various characters navigate differences, difficulties, and societal expectations, all while trying to figure out how to code.

Community is a zany, crazy found family comedy of the type not often seen on TV anymore. Some seasons and some episodes are better than others--some lines have even proven prophetic!--and overall the series contains mature and usually clean content. The historical fiction genre has become saturated with World War II settings, but at least it encourages authors to find new angles and fresh stories. This one follows a British writer to the formerly occupied British island of Guernsey, where she meets and falls for a small group of individuals brought together by books. The real part of the story we're wondering about is how does an author discount one part of a love triangle when the character hasn't done anything wrong, and what's the deal with the girl proposing?

Blood Heir was almost pulled from publication, but we're glad it wasn't! Although the story gets rather bloody, the slightly different setting, light romance and clean language work in its favor.
