It's not that we're not fans of "Les Miserables," actually, never mind, we aren't really fans of the musical adaptation. The story wanders and doesn't really settle on any theme, plus there's the issue of the musical being sung ALL THE WAY THROUGH. And we haven't even mentioned the lack of dance numbers yet! Recommendation: Best version of this story is the 1998 film adaptation.

If you're not yet familiar with Laini Taylor's work (because you live under a rock or in a basement or something), then know she has an admirable, uniquely lyrical writing style. It works really well for some, maybe not as much for others. We definitely thought it worked for her "Strange the Dreamer" and "Muse of Nightmares" duology.
