  • EP030_EN_Ariadne – how to respond to betrayal

“43 Ariadne” is a main-belt asteroid, known for being a bright and elongated object, discovered in 1857. It is the second-largest member of the Flora family and orbits between Mars and Jupiter.

In mythology, Ariadne is a Cretan princess, daughter of Minos, who helps Theseus escape the Labyrinth with her famous thread, betraying her father for love.

After their escape, however, Theseus abandons her on the island of Naxos, leaving her alone and without identity.

The myth concludes with her rebirth: Dionysus finds her, loves her, and makes her immortal.

Ariadne realizes that, after giving up everything for love, Theseus did not prove worthy of her sacrifice. After a period of pain and disorientation, she does not remain trapped in her trauma, but opens herself to life, transforming her suffering into a new existence.

Ariadne does not withdraw into pain, revenge, or self-destruction; instead, by making use of her experience, she evolves into a new person, more aware of others and of herself.

  • EP029_EN_Thetis – love that accepts and does not control

From an astronomical perspective, Tethys is a natural satellite of Saturn. It is one of the planet’s largest moons, discovered in 1684 by the astronomer Cassini. It is composed almost entirely of water ice, with a bright and heavily cratered surface.

In mythology, Tethys is a sea nymph who tried to make her son Achilles immortal by dipping him into the River Styx, leaving his heel vulnerable. To protect him from his destined death, she hid him disguised as a girl, but he was discovered and departed for Troy.

Although she knows he will die young, Tethys accepts his choice, embodying the painful act of letting go. From an ethical perspective, Tethys represents above all the conflict between love and acceptance; like any parent, or anyone who loves, she goes through three stages:

    1. Absolute protective love: she tries in every way to save Achilles, even defying fate.

    2. The limit of control: she realizes she cannot decide in place of her son or remove him from his destiny.

    3. Painful acceptance: in the end, she lets Achilles choose his own path, even knowing it will lead to his death.

In the end, one must realize that true love is not possession or control, but freedom…

  • EP028_EN_Autonoe – coping with the pain of loss

Autonoe is a natural satellite of the planet Jupiter, orbiting the planet in a retrograde direction.

Autonoe is a Theban princess and the mother of Actaeon. One day, her son saw Artemis naked, and for this he was transformed into a stag and killed by his own dogs, which did not recognize him.

Devastated by the loss, Autonoe falls into deep despair.

Autonoe embodies a profoundly human psychological experience: trauma, loss, and the shattering of relational identity bonds.

Traumatic grief causes a sense of guilt without a clear cause and a total feeling of helplessness in the face of suffering. Although she survives the loss, Autonoe is no longer able to rebuild a sense of meaning.

When we are touched by such traumatic events, we must distinguish between:

    - what is not within our power, namely the natural course of events;

    - what is within our power: our response.

The initial response to grief may be to express pain openly; then, once mourning has been honored, it becomes necessary to rediscover meaning in everyday life, living in a way that honors the memory of the deceased through our actions.

  • EP027_EN_Hephaestus – How to control anger

“2212 Hephaisto” is an Apollo-type asteroid (meaning its orbit crosses that of Earth). In mythology, Hephaestus was the god of fire, volcanoes, metallurgy, and metalworking. He was considered the blacksmith of the gods, the one who forged weapons, armor, and divine objects.

When Hephaestus is rejected and cast down from Olympus, he has every reason to be destructive; instead, he retreats to his forge and creates, becoming indispensable to the gods. Hephaestus therefore “controls” anger not by repressing it, but by channeling it into action.

He also does not act on impulse or lose control; rather, he defines a strategy and plans…

His emotions are not suppressed, but neither do they lead to destructive reactions; instead, they are internalized and examined with clarity, transforming into a thoughtful, productive, and constructive response.

  • EP026_EN_Psyche – Fragility that can become strength

“16 Psyche” is a main-belt asteroid. Psyche is a mortal of extraordinary beauty loved by Eros, who visits her only in the dark. Driven by doubt, she betrays him by looking at him and loses him. To win him back, she faces extremely difficult trials imposed by Aphrodite. In the end, she is forgiven, made immortal, and reunited with Eros, symbolizing the soul’s journey through error, suffering, and transformation.

Psyche represents the fragility of the human soul, which can be unsettled by uncertainty and life’s difficulties (hardship, loss, isolation, failures, …).

Fragility, therefore, is an “existential” condition of human beings, which can sometimes stagnate, fester, and wear down the spirit. Yet it can also evolve positively through overcoming difficulties. Fragility, then, is the starting point for transformation and inner growth, for maturing and evolving toward a stronger and more complete form.
