For more than one hundred years, thousands of Native American children were taken from their homes and sent to residential Indian schools in the United States and Canada, to forcibly assimilate them into white culture and Christianity.

Indigenous advocate Jennifer Night Bird Miller describes cruelties they endured and what she hopes for as the U.S. moves toward understanding this painful past.

“The US citizens need to know and acknowledge that these atrocities have occurred and the people are still here. And in order for us to heal, we need acknowledgment.”

Plus -- Sandi Cianciulli and MaryAnne Robins from the Carlisle Indian School Project 90 miles northwest of Baltimore, tell us how they hope to memorialize young lives lost.

It’s not a traditional comic--it uses augmented reality, through a phone app, to bring out the real barbarity of slavery on a Maryland plantation. And not your traditional comic superhero: this is a 19-year-old enslaved African-American who wins immortal powers. Jupiter Invincible is the concept of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa and graphic artist Ram Devineni. Devineni is already known for a heroine who fights for those society scorns:

“The Superhero doesn’t have to fight an asteroid that’s about to collide into the earth. You can have superheroes fight basic problems that everyone deals with and understands, but through their heroic acts really challenge us and hopefully become better people.”

Growing up in Baltimore’s Little Italy, Nancy D’Alesandro never pictured herself running for office. She watched her father campaign for Congress and for mayor; she helped her mother with the nitty-gritty of organizing and keeping track of political favors.Biographer Susan Page says that only after Nancy Pelosi had moved across the country, raised five children, chaired the California Democratic Party and raised millions for other candidates did she run for Congress herself--and a decade later pushed herself onto the path toward speaker. Pelosi told Page her father’s advice resonated,“No one is going to give you power, you have to seize it. So even if you think you deserve power, don’t think you’re going to be rewarded. You have to go out and fight for it and win it.” You can hear more from Susan Page next month. She’s hosting the White House Historical Association's 2021 Lecture Series. We hear how MTA plans to reach more jobs in the Baltimore region, and improve on-time performance--about one out of four buses now runs late.Then, a new report identifies Baltimore’s areas of greatest transit need. Persuasion is what Andres Lares does all day. Actually, most of us spend a big part of our day trying to persuade people to see things our way--but Lares and his colleagues do it full time, in an organized way, at the Shapiro Negotiations Institute. So three of them wrote a book called Persuade, that compresses the skill into four steps. Most people base choices on trust and emotions, Lares says--but you still have to present a logical case for what you’re proposing.

“Because over time the process of which we made a decision and the decision itself both impact how we feel about it. So it isn’t just where we got to but also how we got there, and so logic plays a big role in that.”

CityLit Project, dedicated to literature, writers, and their audiences, understands how storytelling can promote empathy. Its current series called ‘Becoming American,” offers proof.

CityLit board member Aditya Desai and author/producer Saima Sitwat give us a preview. It features videos and essays of ten women immigrants who now call Maryland home. One of them is Ale Balcazar from Colombia:
