Terry 'Uncle T' Williams runs Challenge2Change, and Isaiah Johnson founded Greenmount East Leadership Project. Long COVID--with symptoms that linger for months like brain fog, dizziness, or heart palpitations --may affect 2 to 10 percent of children who have been infected with COVID, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In September, a new set of guidelines was published to help pediatricians identify and treat long COVID. We speak with one of the lead authors, Dr. Laura Malone, co-director of Kennedy Krieger’s Pediatric Post-COVID19 Rehabilitation Clinic.

Then, an athletic, academically engaged high school student is suddenly exhausted. His normal schedule of classes and sports and activities with friends shrinks, as he struggles with dizziness, nausea, and brain fog. We speak with Lucas Denault and his mom, Karin, about his recovery from long COVID.

You may know Ben Jealous as a civil-rights leader -- former president of the NAACP, its youngest president ever when he was named in 2008. You may know him as the Democrat candidate for governor of Maryland in 2018, who failed to unseat incumbent Republican Larry Hogan. Maybe you know that Jealous was born and grew up in California -- in part because his African-American mother and white father left Baltimore after they married; interracial marriage was not legal in Maryland until 1967.

But many of the stories Jealous tells in his new book--including the summers he spent with his maternal grandparents in West Baltimore--are rooted in Maryland.  The book is called Never Forget Our People Were Always Free: A Parable of American Healing. And Ben Jealous joins us on Zoom to talk about it.

In Liberty Road, sociologist  Gregory Smithsimon lays out how African-Americans broke the color barrier in Baltimore County, how their white neighbors reacted, and the role of suburbs in building a Black middle class.

Atman Smith, Ali Smith, and Andrés González are co-founders of the Holistic Life Foundation. Their new book, “Let Your Light Shine: How Mindfulness Can Empower Children and Rebuild Communities,” is partly about the systems in Baltimore that make life so challenging for Black and Brown children, partly about the authors’ personal transformations through yoga. The volume tells the stories of the Holistic Life Foundation’s founding and its two-decades working to spread love to at-risk youth.
