Welcome to The Healing Light Studio. I’m JoAnn, and I’m so glad you’re here.
Thank you for choosing to spend a few quiet moments with me today. Wherever this message finds you, I hope these next few minutes offer you a chance to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply be present.
And as we settle in today, I want us to think about something we may not think about very often: the impact we can have on another person’s life without even realizing it.
Have you ever had someone tell you that something you said or did made a difference in their life...
and you barely remembered doing it?
Maybe it was something you said during a conversation.
A little encouragement you offered.
A kindness that didn’t seem particularly significant to you at the time.
But they remembered it.
And sometimes years later, they’ll tell you about it, and you find yourself thinking...
I had no idea that meant so much to you.
And moments like that have a way of staying with you, because they make you wonder how many other times something you said or did mattered more than you ever knew.
I’ve been thinking about that lately.
About all the ways our lives touch other lives without us always knowing it.
Because I think sometimes we imagine that making a difference in someone’s life has to be something big. Something we planned. Something we can point to and say, That mattered.
But I’m not so sure.
Because making a difference in someone’s life doesn’t always require some grand gesture. Sometimes it happens in the ordinary ways we choose to show up for one another.
Sometimes it’s stopping long enough to listen.
Sometimes it’s noticing someone everybody else seems to be walking past.
Sometimes it’s offering a little encouragement or simply treating someone with kindness.
And we may never know what that moment meant to the other person.
We may never know if the words we offered were exactly what they needed to hear that day. We may never know if a simple kindness reminded them that somebody cared, or if taking the time to listen made them feel a little less alone.
Most of the time, we simply continue with our day, never realizing that what felt like a small moment to us may have stayed with someone else long after we walked away.
But the more I think about it, the more I realize it, it works both ways.
There are people who have left something with us too.
Maybe they never knew it.
Maybe we never told them.
Maybe they were part of our lives for years, or maybe our paths crossed only briefly.
But something about the way they showed up, something they said, something they taught us, or simply the way they treated us...
stayed.
And that makes me wonder:
Do we ever fully know what our presence can mean in another person’s life?
There’s a verse in Hebrews that has been sitting with me as I’ve thought about this.
“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
Hebrews 13:2 KJV
There’s one word in that Scripture that really catches my attention.
Unawares.
Without knowing.
Without realizing the significance of the encounter while it was happening.
Now, I’m not suggesting that every person we meet has been specially sent to deliver some hidden message to us.
But I do think this Scripture gives us something worth paying attention to.
Because we don’t always know what another person is carrying when our paths cross.
We don’t know what happened before we met them.
We don’t know what they’re going home to.
We don’t know what they’ve been praying about, whether they’re grieving, or what they may be trying to hold together.
And sometimes we don’t know what a little kindness might mean on that particular day.
There’s something humbling about that.
It reminds us that there may be much more happening in an ordinary encounter than either person can see.
And maybe there’s another part of this that we don’t always recognize.
Sometimes God places us somewhere because someone else needs what we carry.
And sometimes God allows someone to cross our path because we need what they carry.
We don’t always know which one it is.
Maybe that’s why it’s important to pay attention.
The person standing in front of us may need encouragement.
Or maybe we’re the one who needs to hear what they have to say.
Maybe we have wisdom from something we’ve already lived through that could help someone who’s just beginning to walk through it.
Or perhaps their experience is about to help us see our own situation differently.
Sometimes we’re the giver.
Sometimes we’re the receiver.
And sometimes...
we are both.
We don’t always know why our paths cross.
And maybe we don’t have to.
Maybe our responsibility is simply to remain open enough to notice.
And sometimes, noticing someone stays with us even after the moment has passed. We carry something from the encounter with us. A face. A need. A concern. And sometimes, we carry that person with us in a way they may never know.
And for me, one of the ways that happens is through prayer.
I think sometimes we underestimate the power of simply praying for another person.
There have been times when I’ve passed someone on the street who was asking for food or needed some kind of help.
If I’m able to help, I do.
Sometimes that may be something to eat. Sometimes it may be a few dollars, or simply taking a moment to stop and acknowledge the person standing in front of me.
I may not be able to change their circumstances, but I can respond with whatever kindness or help I’m able to offer in that moment.
And before I leave, I let them know that they’re in my prayers.
And for me, those aren’t just words I say for the sake of saying them.
I mean it.
I actually pray for them.
Sometimes that person will come back to my mind again and again throughout the day, and each time, I’ll find myself praying for them.
Asking God to provide for them.
To watch over them.
To keep them safe.
To make a way for whatever it is they need.
And that person doesn’t know what I’m doing.
Our paths may never cross again, and I may never learn what happened after that day.
But I believe there is power in prayer.
And that thought makes me consider the other side of it too.
I know there have been people who have prayed for me.
Some of those prayers I knew about.
But I imagine there have been others I never heard.
Someone may have whispered my name in prayer.
Someone may have asked God to strengthen me during a difficult season.
Someone may have prayed for my family.
Someone may have asked God to guide me, protect me, comfort me, or give me peace...
and I never knew.
Think about that for a moment.
Some of the love that has covered your life may have come through prayers you never heard.
And some of the prayers you’ve prayed for other people may have mattered in ways you will never get to see.
Maybe one of the quietest ways we walk beside another person is through prayer.
They don’t have to be sitting next to us.
They don’t even have to know we’re praying.
But for those few moments, we’re carrying their name, their need, their life before God.
We don’t have to know the outcome for our care to matter.
We pray anyway.
We care anyway.
Because sometimes our part isn’t to know what happens next.
Sometimes our part is simply to be faithful with the moment we’ve been given.
So as you reflect on today’s message, I’d like to leave you with this week’s Soul Work.
I invite you to sit with these questions gently:
Who has crossed your path and left something meaningful with you, perhaps without ever knowing it?
Is there someone God has placed on your heart lately who might need your encouragement, your presence, or simply your prayer?
And are you leaving enough room in your day to notice the people God may be allowing your path to cross?
You don’t have to force an answer.
Just pay attention.
And perhaps there’s someone whose name comes to mind right now.
If there is...
maybe this is a good moment to pray for them.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the people You allow to cross our paths.
Thank You for the ones who have encouraged us, prayed for us, listened to us, and shown us kindness, sometimes without ever knowing how much their presence meant.
Help us to pay attention to the people around us.
When You place us somewhere because someone needs what we carry, help us recognize the opportunity to offer kindness, encouragement, compassion, or prayer.
And when You place someone along our path because we need what they carry, help us to be open enough to receive it.
Father, we also lift up the people who may be on our hearts right now.
You know their needs even when we don’t.
You know what they’re carrying and what they’re facing.
Watch over them.
Provide for them.
Strengthen them.
Comfort them.
And remind them, in whatever way they need today, that they are seen and they are not alone.
And for every prayer that has ever been whispered on our behalf, even the ones we never knew were being prayed, we thank You.
Continue to guide our steps and help us walk through this life with our eyes and our hearts open to one another.
In Your name we pray, Amen.
Maybe we won’t always know the difference we’ve made in another person’s life.
And there may be ways another person’s presence, kindness, or prayers have shaped our lives without us ever realizing it.
But perhaps we don’t need to know everything.
We can remain open.
We can pay attention.
We can pray.
We can care.
And we can trust God with everything we cannot see.
So as you continue along your own road, stay open to the people whose paths cross yours.
You may never know what your presence means to them, or what their presence may come to mean to you.
So keep showing up with an open heart. Keep noticing the people around you. Keep offering kindness when you can. And when someone crosses your mind, don’t underestimate the power of simply stopping for a moment and praying for them.
And perhaps that’s the beauty of it. We may never know where one small act of kindness or one quiet prayer will lead, but God does.
Thank you for spending these few quiet moments with me today.
Until next time, my friend, take good care of yourself.
One breath, one step, one day at a time.
