Welcome to The Healing Light Studio.
I’m JoAnn, and I’m so glad you’re here.
Thank you for choosing to spend a few quiet moments with me today.
Wherever this message finds you, I hope these next few minutes offer you a chance to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply be present. Perhaps today you’ll be reminded that giving yourself permission to dream again is only the beginning, because eventually, we have to decide what to do with the possibilities we’re beginning to see.
What happens after you give yourself permission to dream again?
Maybe you begin imagining possibilities you haven’t allowed yourself to consider in a long time. Maybe you start wondering what could be next. Maybe you begin looking at your life a little differently and thinking, What if there really is something more ahead for me?
And somewhere along the way, you realize that dreaming was only the beginning.
Because eventually, the dream asks something of you.
It asks you to make room.
But what does that really mean?
Making room means allowing the dream to become more than something you think about from time to time. At some point, you begin to wonder what it would look like to actually move toward it. You may not know exactly where it will lead or how everything will come together, but you begin to see that there may be a part for you to play in what comes next.
And that can be a little uncomfortable, because dreaming feels safe when it stays in our imagination. Making room asks us to become open to change. It asks us to consider that where we are today may not be where God intends for us to stay.
Dreaming lets us imagine something different. Making room means becoming willing for something to actually be different.
That’s what makes the words in Isaiah 43:19 so meaningful to me. God says:
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
There’s something about those words, spring forth, that catches my attention. Because when something begins to spring forth, it doesn’t necessarily arrive all at once. It begins to show itself. There are signs of life, signs of growth, signs that something is changing.
And I think sometimes we miss that because we’re looking for the finished picture. We want to know where this is going, how it’s going to work, and what it’s going to look like when we get there. But God may not be showing us the finished picture yet. He may simply be inviting us to notice what is beginning.
Maybe you’re thinking differently than you were a few months ago. Maybe something you once dismissed keeps coming back to your heart. Maybe you’re beginning to feel hopeful about an area of your life where you had stopped expecting anything to change. Or maybe you’re simply more open to possibility than you used to be.
Those things matter.
They may not tell you exactly where you’re going, but they can help you recognize that you’re not standing in quite the same place anymore.
And once you begin to notice that something is changing, the question becomes: What do I do with what I’m beginning to see?
I think this is where we can make things harder than they need to be. We start thinking that if God is doing something new, then we need to make some big decision or have everything figured out before we can move forward.
But making room for what’s next doesn’t always require a dramatic change.
Sometimes it looks like making better use of a few hours you already have. Sometimes it’s finally starting the thing you’ve been thinking about for months. It might be learning something new, having a conversation you’ve been putting off, or simply giving more attention to something that keeps tugging at your heart.
And sometimes making room isn’t about adding something at all. Sometimes it means looking at what is already taking up space in your life and asking whether it still belongs there.
Maybe it’s fear.
And I understand that fear because I’ve had to face some of my own. As I’ve allowed myself to dream about what could be next for my life and for The Healing Light Studio, there’s excitement, but there’s also fear.
I can see things beginning to grow. I can see possibilities that I’m genuinely excited about. But if I’m being truthful, there are moments when I wonder, Can I really do this? What if I step out and it doesn’t work? What if what I’m dreaming about is bigger than what I’m capable of doing?
But I’ve also started thinking about another kind of what if.
What if it does work?
We spend so much time worrying about what could go wrong that we don’t always talk about the fear that can come with something going right.
What if the opportunity really does come? What if the thing you’ve been nurturing begins to grow? What if the door opens? What if you find yourself stepping into something bigger than anything you’ve experienced before?
That can bring its own kind of fear, because now you’re not only being asked to do something new. You may be growing into a version of yourself you haven’t met yet.
And you may wonder, Will I know how to handle it? Can I carry the responsibility that comes with it? Am I ready to become the person this next season may require me to be?
Maybe sometimes we aren’t only afraid that the new thing won’t happen.
Sometimes we’re afraid that it will.
Because if it does, life may change. We may change. And even good change can feel unfamiliar when it takes us somewhere we’ve never been before.
But maybe making room means making room for that possibility too. Not only believing that something good could happen, but trusting that if God allows us to step into something new, He can also help us grow into the person we need to become when we get there.
And I’m learning that making room for what’s next doesn’t mean the fear disappears first. Sometimes making room means acknowledging that the fear is there and deciding that it doesn’t get to make every decision for me.
I can be excited and afraid at the same time.
I can have questions and still move forward.
I can trust God and still have moments when I wonder how all of this is going to come together.
Maybe that’s the part of making room too. Not waiting until we feel completely fearless, but becoming willing to take the next faithful step even while some of those fears are still sitting beside us.
So when I talk about making room for what’s next, I’m not talking to you from the other side of this journey. I’m walking through it too. I’m learning what it means to grow into new possibilities while still carrying some questions and fears along the way.
And maybe that’s part of what God is teaching me in this season. I don’t have to wait until I feel completely ready or completely fearless. I can acknowledge what I’m feeling, bring those fears to Him, and still take the next faithful step.
And maybe that’s where preparation begins.
There’s a difference between dreaming about what’s next and preparing for what’s next. Dreaming allows us to see possibility. Preparation is where we begin responding to it.
And I’m learning that preparation doesn’t always look like some big, courageous move. Most of the time, it looks pretty ordinary. It’s doing what you can with what you have, right where you are. Let me say that again, It’s doing what you can with what you have, right where you are.
Maybe it’s setting aside a little more time for something that matters to you. Maybe it’s learning something you’ll need for where you hope to go. Maybe it’s asking for help, having a conversation, making a plan, or finally taking that first small step you’ve been thinking about.
None of those things guarantee that everything will turn out exactly the way we imagine. That’s where we have to leave room for God.
We prepare, but we don’t control.
We take the step in front of us, but we don’t have to know where the tenth step will lead.
And I think there’s freedom in that, because sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to figure out what’s next that we miss what God may be asking us to do right now.
Maybe the question isn’t, “God, will You show me the whole plan?”
Maybe the question is, “God, what can I faithfully do with what You’ve already shown me?”
Because preparing for what’s next isn’t about getting ahead of God. It’s about being willing to move with Him, one step at a time.
What if the next step isn’t knowing exactly where God is taking you? What if the next step is simply preparing yourself to go?
As you reflect on today’s message, I’d like to leave you with this week’s Soul Work.
If you have your journal nearby, or even if you just want to hold this question quietly in your heart, ask yourself:
What would I do differently today if I truly believed God might be preparing me for something new?
Don’t rush to find a big answer. Give yourself permission to sit with the question for a while. Pay attention to what comes to mind, especially the things you may have been dismissing because they seemed too small, too uncertain, or maybe even a little scary.
Then take it one step further and ask:
What is one small thing I can do to make room for what’s next?
Maybe your answer is practical. Maybe it’s something you need to pray about. Maybe there’s something you need to begin, something you need to rearrange, or something you simply need to give more attention to.
Whatever comes to you, remember, you don’t have to do everything today.
Just take the next faithful step.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for meeting us right where we are. Thank You for the dreams that are beginning to awaken again, for the possibilities we’re beginning to see, and even for the questions we don’t have answers to yet.
When You are doing something new in our lives, help us to recognize it. Give us eyes to notice what is beginning to spring forth, even when it is small and even when we cannot see where it will lead.
And Father, You know the fears we carry. You know the questions we sometimes don’t say out loud. You know the moments when we wonder if we’re ready, if we’re capable, or if we have what it takes to step into something new.
Remind us that we don’t have to be fearless to trust You.
Give us the courage to make room for what You may be doing. Show us what needs our attention, what may need to be rearranged, and what we may need to release. Help us not rush ahead of You, but also not to allow fear to keep us standing still when You are asking us to move.
Teach us to be faithful with what You have already shown us. When we want the whole plan, bring our attention back to the step that is right in front of us.
And as we prepare for whatever comes next, help us hold our dreams with open hands, trusting that Your plans may look different from ours, but knowing that we can trust You with every part of the journey.
Give us peace for today, wisdom for the next step, and faith for whatever comes after that.
In Your name, we pray. Amen.
Thank you for spending these quiet moments with me today.
As you move through the rest of your day, remember, you don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin making room for what’s next. Pay attention to what is beginning to grow, be honest about what you’re feeling, and trust that the next faithful step is enough for today.
You don’t need the whole plan.
You just need to be willing to take the next step, trusting that along the way, God is also helping you grow into the version of yourself you haven’t met yet.
Until next time, my friend. Remember,
One breath, one step, one day at a time.
