Today we cover the Seven Factors of Awakening, also known as the Seven Factors of Enlightenment. These are seven qualities we cultivate that lead to “true knowing and release.”
We cover each of these seven factors, when to cultivate them, and how they are interrelated. This is a teaching that can serve us in both formal meditation practice and in daily life.

This is a recording of the meditationfrom our Thursday Morning Meditation on October 29th, 2026. We’re discussing the second of the Five Hindrances, ill-will. Metta is one antidote to ill-will, so I thought a metta meditation would be a lovely way to start group this week.

Today I sit down for a conversation with Justin Michelson. Justin is an old friend, dharma teacher, and lovely human. He’s here to discuss his new book, The Dharma of Healing. As I mention in the episode, the book is wonderful. The Dharma of Healing offers a unique and heartfelt path to working with what Justin calls “original wounds.”
Listen to the episode, get to know Justin, and order his new book!

Like everything eventually does, the How They Meditate series has come to an end! I appreciate all of the feedback and wonderful conversations this series has fueled. Today, I want to offer just a few closing thoughts regarding our practice, what we do with this information, and finding a practice that works for us.

It’s hard to write a paragraph or two about Thich Nhat Hanh, or Thay as his students call him. A Vietnamese monk, Thay trained in Thien (Vietnamese Zen), studied Buddhist philosophy including Yogacara and Abhidharma, and trained in many early Buddhist texts in both Pali and the Chinese Agamas. Additionally, he has many teachings that are uniquely him.
A poet, activist, teacher, and guiding teacher to countless around the world, Thich Nhat Hanh lived for many years in exile from his home nation. His teachings are firmly rooted in both Thien Buddhism and Yogacara philosphy. I cannot think of a teacher who has more deeply impacted my practice (and my family’s) in daily life.
