I don't know about you, but I just can not get enough of Zibby Owens. She’s been a guest on the show and I’ve read her work before for On My Nightstand. This incredible, powerful memoir is just one more reason for me to love her work.

Zibby Owens is an essayist, memoirist, award-winning podcaster, book publisher, entrepreneur, and CEO. Owens founded Zibby Media, a privately held media company, in 2018, and the company has since grown to include the publishing house Zibby Books, the magazine Zibby Mag, and the podcast network Zibby Audio, which produces her award-winning podcast “Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books." Owen’s daily podcast has become an essential destination for writers (she has interviewed more than 1200 authors on the show) and it recently surpassed 9 million downloads. Her advocacy on behalf of writers and their work has earned her the moniker “New York’s Most Powerful Book-influencer” by New York Magazine. Owens is a regular contributor to ABC-TV’s "Good Morning America" and other broadcast outlets, where she shares her mission-driven enthusiasm for books. She is the author of the memoir Bookends: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Literature, the children’s book, Princess Charming, and the editor of two anthologies on motherhood. Owens is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Business School. She lives in New York with her husband and four children.

Today I’m reading from Chapter 8 of Carla D. Williams’ book, Blues Highway.

Carla D. Williams began writing as a teenager in Chicago and later became a newspaper editor and Humanities educator. As a fellow in the Bay Area Writing Project Summer Institute 2010, she produced memoir, fiction, poetry, and more. History, travel, sports, politics, and raising her two boys have fed her imagination and dreams. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in e-zines Digital Paper, Poetry Express, Dillydoun Review, and elsewhere. She is part of Datura Writer’s Collective in Oakland and developed this novel with support from Marlene Connor Lynch Literary.

While drugs changed hands and bullets flew outside, his grandmother’s kitchen was a haven for him.

James Beard nominated chef, Keith Corbin literally grew up in the drug game and ended up working in the kitchen of the maximum security prison where he served seven years as an adult.
