IAG or Insurance Australia Group is one of the largest insurance companies in Australia. IAG has been around for more than 160 years, they obviously have a huge stack of legacy applications and infrastructure. There are over 147 core insurance systems running within the IAG group. The majority of those are mid-range mainframe systems like AS/400.

Around two years ago, the company decided to change things. They name long time executive Julie Batch as Chief Customer Officer. Under her leadership, IAG started a group called Customer Labs to consume and get involved with open source; something they never did in their 140 year long history.

That work led IAG to actually open source their own technology. They open sourced one of their technologies called Data Pipeline. It's a tool to help companies do ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) in python.

"IAG is an incredibly conservative company that's 160 plus years and operates in a highly regulated industry," said Satterly. "To open source their technology is pretty significant; it's a big change and a jump ahead for them."
