  • Why Hello… Middle Adulthood! When Did You Show Up?

Suzanne’s had a bit of a sleepless night, but Michelle’s fully rested and ready to take on the topic of middle age, or as she prefers to call it, middle adulthood, in today’s episode. Originally intended to review the more positive side of this time in life, our hosts, as usual, look at all sides of the topic, adding in a number of their own experiences, both hilarious and touching.

They begin today by tending to some unfinished business from their previous episode, namely sharing their favorite Seinfeld episode, before beginning their exploration of middle age. When they first noticed it setting in, the age they consider it to be, and some of its negative and positive attributes form much of this exploration along with examples from their own lives. They finish up by highlighting the importance of a ‘carpe diem’ attitude, and some pieces of valuable advice which they received from their parents. In yet another episode that runs the gamut from lighthearted to deeply thoughtful, Michelle and Suzanne again bring their unique perspective to bear on a fact of life to which everyone can relate.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Their favorite Seinfeld episode

      “Middle age is not pretty.”

“I’m dangerously close to considering myself old.”

“Somewhere along the way, I became not so young anymore.”

“When did I become the oldest woman at the table instead of the youngest at the table?”

“Look at you getting all positive and reflective on us here.”

“It's like, ‘Oh my God, what is this?’”

“Older women clothes are much more comfortable than Ann Taylor ever was.”

“I would go into the old women's section to buy for my mom at that time. And look at me now. Now…they know me by name.”

“I also have a very false sense of how good looking I am, and how fit I am. And, remember, my mind tells me I'm still 24.”

“I had blissfully gone through life, not knowing about underarm flap, not looking for it, and I found it when someone pointed it out to me.”

“As a middle aged woman, I don't really care about what other people think of me.”

“We have to enjoy life now because we're not guaranteed old age.”

“In middle age and middle adulthood, we actually get to that point where we become the ones who share our wisdom and our experiences with our kids, and hopefully can make a difference in their life.”

“It was a tough day, but now we're proud AARP people.”

      “Stop calling me out.”

    • Why Hello… Random Thoughts in Friendship!

It’s been a day of frustration for both Michelle and Suzanne, so the orange juice is completely optional for this episode. To provide an uptick to their day, they have chosen to follow the example of one of their favorite TV shows (especially for Suzanne), Seinfeld, and host an episode about nothing. As you will quickly discover, however, any conversation between these two best friends always results in some entertaining and profound moments for themselves and their listeners, and today is no exception.

They start off by describing the reasons behind their frustrating days, the notion of making this a Seinfeld-esque episode, some Star Wars trivia, and the definition of ‘making dinner’. They also venture into what it means to babysit, Aunt Susie’s Rules, grandkids and Disneyland, Mother’s Day and their own experiences as children and mothers, and some of the dumbest things they did as teenagers. Born out of frustration and with a plan to be about nothing, this episode is anything but, as it celebrates the ease and warmth of a conversation between great friends and the variety in both lightness and depth that can be found there.

      Episode Highlights:

      • Michelle and Suzanne’s frustrating days
      • Seinfeld
      • Star Wars trivia
      • Making dinner
      • Babysitting
      • Aunt Susie’s Rules (ASR)
      • Grandkids and Disneyland
      • Mother’s Day, moms, and children
      • The dumbest things they did as teenagers
      • Quotes:

“Some days that's what you need to do is just bitch about it.”

“Give me a fucking break, you idiot!”

“That guy needed a Xanax, and now you need one.”

“While you were releasing to the universe, you made me laugh.”

“You're in charge of the kids. Therefore, you are babysitting.”

“I think it's an aunt's place or a grandparent's place to spoil those children.”

“You were only thrown out by the Disney police once. It's not like it happens every single time you go in there.”

“If I have to go to Disneyland, they better remember it.”

“You will be the grumpiest grandma there.”

“I think I lied through my teeth to my parents about what I was doing.”

“I don't see you ever doing anything stupid.”

“I got in so much trouble for that one.”

“At that point, it was the drunkest I had ever been.”

“It's a miracle no one was killed that day… and looking back on it, I am totally horrified by it.”

“That's a direct shot at me.”

“Were you too drunk to remember winning it?”

“She had strict rules and we were all the better for it.”

“I think God gives us the children we're meant to have, and we raise them because God knows how we're going to raise them.”

“God never gave me more than I could handle.”

It’s just orange juice and coffee for Michelle and Suzanne today as they recover from their weekend making joyful memories together with friends in Tucson. Given that, it makes perfect sense that the topic they have chosen to explore this week is the concept of ‘sparking joy’ – what it means, examples from their lives of what does and doesn’t spark joy for them, and how to make a conscious effort to find joy in daily life.

They start off by reviewing their weekend and what Michelle learned and observed during it, and then delve into their experiences with Marie Kondo’s exercise in sparking joy. Along the way, they share their own examples of what does and doesn’t spark joy for them, illustrate these with their trademark entertaining stories, and highlight the need to build joy into daily life and get rid of whatever doesn’t bring it.  Fittingly, they finish up the episode by defining the joyful exclamation ‘Skol!’. “I don't consider myself a visual person either, I really go with that feeling…and when I get that feeling, I know it’s right.”

“It's all about being present also in that moment and actually letting yourself completely relax into it and remember everything going on around you.”

“The only time you can be courageous is when you're dealing with something you’re afraid of.”

“Our inner voices are nasty little bitches.”

              • Why Hello… Budgets, Birds, and Bieber

With her head still spinning from all of the excellent wedding preparation advice shared by Suzanne and Katy in last week’s episode, Michelle takes a short break from the planning to discuss a range of topics with Suzanne here today.

They begin by sharing their COVID vaccination side effects and the confusion inherent in differing pandemic protocols. Michelle then offers details of her trip to Houston and Galveston for wedding planning, the wedding location itself, and the budget experiment in which she and Robb have engaged. Suzanne draws their conversation to a close with her story about going to a Rainforest Café, and her very special surprise gift for Jeff. While budgets, birds, and Bieber may seem to be unrelated topics, our hosts bring the common themes of friendship, humor, and the enjoyment of life to them all here today.

Their advice covers a wide variety of topics such as visiting tables during the reception, various wedding traditions, seating charts, photography, and the order of events at the reception, among many, many others. Michelle also runs Katy and Eva through a ‘Bridezilla’ quiz, and Eva shares an app they will be inviting guests to access as well as the hashtag they have created for the wedding. As you will hear, there is so much to cover for this very special day that there just isn’t enough time to do it justice in one episode! The plan is to revisit it all on another episode closer to the wedding - something we can all look forward to as we join in the joy and excitement of this incredibly significant moment in the lives of our hosts and their families.

                  • Why Hello… Karen!

Fresh from an eventful weekend with Suzanne, it’s orange juice only today for Michelle as she gives her liver a rest, and together she and Suzanne delve into a topic which arose in last week’s podcast. The notion of ‘pulling a Karen’ was a new one for Michelle last week, so she has since done some research on just what the criteria for a Karen are, and today she and Suzanne offer their perspectives on Karens, and explore the possibility that one of them might meet these criteria.

Before they get into the main topic, though, Michelle shares a couple of scary experiences she has had, one of which just happened recently, and then she and Suzanne review their safety plans for potentially dangerous situations. They also discuss March Madness Pools, COVID vaccinations and ‘vaxholes’, the universality of COVID, and Suzanne’s experience with an anti-mask demonstrator while she was visiting Michelle. Finally, they dive into the Karen criteria, Suzanne’s perspective on them and on being considered one, her results from a couple online ‘Karen’ quizzes, and some concluding thoughts regarding the Karen approach to life. If you’ve ever wondered about what it means to be a Karen, today’s entertaining episode is the one for you!

                    Episode Highlights:

                    • Michelle’s scary parking garage and airport stories
                    • Michelle and Suzanne’s safety plans for potentially dangerous situations
                    • March Madness Pools
                    • COVID vaccinations and ‘vaxholes’
                    • The universality of COVID
                    • Suzanne’s experience with an anti-mask demonstrator
                    • Criteria for being considered a Karen
                    • Her thoughts on Karens and being considered one
                    • Suzanne’s results from the Buzzfeed and PopBuzz’s ‘Karen’ Quizzes
                    • Taming a Karen approach while also not letting others walk all over you
                    • Quotes:

“I knew instantly that this was going to be trouble. I needed to look for my exits.”

“Don’t fall for that Ted Bundy ruse!”

“How the hell am I going to get out of here as quickly and as safely as I can?”

“It did give me great pleasure to go see friends, spend a weekend, and not be quite so hung up on COVID.”

                      “I wanted to punch him!”

“You’re the reason why we’re all still in this nightmare!”

“Who do you think you are, you asshole?”

“They attacked me to further their cause.”

                      “Mom, you’re such a Karen.”

“If I’m upset about something, I want it resolved.”

“Am I privileged? Yes. Am I a white woman? Yes. Am I middle aged?...Yes to all of those.”

“We did change rooms 3 times before I got a room that I was satisfied with.”

“That’s when I kind of become a Karen, is when all of a sudden I need perfection.”

“I guess it’s how you approach it.”

“I don’t want to be a Karen, I’m just owning up to being a Karen.”

                      “It’s a constant thing in my head now – don’t be a Karen, don’t be a Karen!”

“Don’t let it have you setting for less.”

                      “Don’t be a Michelle, either!”

“If you can embrace it and not take it too seriously and it’s teaching you how to respond differently to people in a way that you’re more comfortable with, why not, right?”

                    • Why Hello… Flying Etiquette!

Michelle and Suzanne are both fully equipped with champagne (and no orange juice) for today’s episode that’s all about traveling by plane and the etiquette involved – a conversation that could have gone on for hours! The many travel restrictions imposed during the pandemic have resulted in our hosts both having acute cases of the travel bug so today they take a deep dive into proper flying etiquette, and, as always, the stories of their experiences with it.

Fresh from watching travel videos with her son and daughter-in-law, Suzanne runs through Michelle’s list of flying etiquette items with her, and the two of them share their firmly held opinions and laugh out loud stories that they swear have not been embellished. Suzanne explains what a ‘Karen’ is, Michelle explains Robb’s airplane set up, and then together they propose the improvements that they feel would make flights much more comfortable. As you will discover, these two best friends have extensive experience with flight travel, and they share the good, the bad, the ugly, and, of course, the hilarious, with listeners today.

                      Episode Highlights:

                    About Orange Juice Optional

                    From the publisher's feed

Orange Juice Optional is a podcast that celebrates both the crazy and serious sides of everyday life. Through the eyes and comfort of a 15-year friendship, and with over 100 years of stories and experiences between them, co-hosts Suzanne and Michelle tackle the ups and downs of their unpredictable empty nest lives. Their stories are relatable, funny and the best part is, they are all absolutely true! While they thought life would get easier after the kids were grown, they’ve since adapted the motto that ‘we couldn’t make this up if we tried’.
