In our penultimate lesson in this study of Revelation, we finish our look at John’s description of the New Jerusalem, shifting from descriptions centered around a city to those of an Edenic paradise, a restoration of what was lost because of sin.  Next week we will consider some concluding remarks from the last few verses of Chapter 22.

Our understanding of Genesis 1 is integral to how we interact with the world around us.  If we truly believe that people are created in God’s image, it should govern how we treat them.  If we truly believe that God has given us dominion over creation, making us stewards of it, then it will govern how we treat creation.

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he first taught them to revere God and honor his will (v. 9-10). He then taught us to pray for physical needs, our daily bread (v. 11).  Then he taught us to pray about our greatest spiritual need, the need for forgiveness, and the need to forgive.

One of the blessings of humanity is our diversity.  We are all different in many ways, but there are also things that we all have in common.  We are all created in the image of God, as we discussed last week; and we all share a common problem, sin.  That problem began in Genesis 3 and has continue to plague us.  But there is hope in Christ.

This week’s afternoon sermon takes a look at Psalm 139, what it teaches us about God, and how we can be encouraged by it.

When Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in Matthew 6, he is doing more than giving us words to say in prayer.  He is also teaching us about our God and our relationship with Him.  The prayer for daily bread is a reminder that we depend on God for our daily needs, while at the same time serving as a statement of trust and contentment.  Lastly, it serves as a reminder to be focused on our community, and use the opportunities we have to do good for others.

God created us in his image.  God wants to have a relationship with his creation.  God took steps to redeem and restore the broken relationship because of his great love for us and because we matter to him.
