This week we focus exclusively on Jesus’ trial before Pilate, with special emphasis on the various people involved.  We examine the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders, the cowardice of Pilate, and the steadfastness of Jesus.

Grace is a wonderful and precious gift that God has given to us, but unfortunately it is also a gift that has great potential to be misunderstood and misapplied.  When it comes to grace, we want to avoid the extremes of understanding grace, rather that be emphasizing grace too much (by sinning without restraint) or by emphasizing grace too little (trying to be saved by works).  It is necessary that we find balance, and understand that while we strive to live a holy and righteous life before God, we recognize that we will fail and trust in his grace to pick us up when we do.

In Hosea, God, through the prophet, spoke of the exodus of his people out of the land of Egypt and of the bondage that it represented.  Centuries later the family of Jesus would mirror that exodus when they returned to their homeland after having fled to Egypt to escape Herod.  But still today, in a metaphorical sense, God continues to call people out of Egypt and into the Promised Land of the glorious kingdom of His Son.

The life of Abraham, as we read of it in Genesis, is one that is filled with ups and downs.  Though there are moments of great faith, there are also moments of great failure, and the story of Genesis 12:10-20 is one of those moments.  Though promised great things by God, Abraham has a set back in his trust as he goes to Egypt, and poor decisions have near catastrophic consequences.

When Jesus concluded his words to his apostles, he went with them across the Kidron Valley to the Garden of Gethsemane. There he was arrested, and brought to trial before Jews and Romans, before being nailed to a cross, and buried in a borrowed tomb. This first lesson will focus first on Jesus’ arrest, and then on aspects of his Jewish and Roman trials.

When the Christ was born, it was known where he was to be born because of the words of the prophet in Micah 5:2.  But as we look at this passage in context, we will hopefully that it was so much more than just an identifier of where the Messiah would be born, but of the nature of his ministry and his kingdom.

In the first lesson of this study, we focused on the command given to Abraham to go out from his family and homeland.  In that lesson, the central discussion was over the things that Abraham had to leave behind, as well as what we have to leave behind to follow Christ.  In this lesson we will shift our attention to the things that Abraham was going toward, namely the promises that God had made to him, and how Abraham responded to those promises in faith.
