  • ep. 17 - Cervix: A Key to Pleasure and Orgasms with Olivia Bryant

How much do you know about the cervix? If not much, then you're not alone. Listen in as we unlock the mysteries of this wonderful organ that plays a role in childbirth. In this episode, Debra welcomes Olivia Bryant to talk about the cervix and how it can be an organ of pleasure. She believes everyone should have the opportunity to experience pleasure during pregnancy and childbirth. The key to unlocking this opportunity is to explore your body, do your sexual healing work, and practice making space and calming down. This conversation opens up a new perspective on the importance of pleasure in childbirth and parenting

Olivia Bryant is the founder of Self: Cervix, a movement to reclaim the cervix as a powerful organ of pleasure and orgasm.

    In this episode:

    • Cervix is an organ of pleasure and orgasm. It moves during your cycles - it moves further up during ovulation and drops down quite low during your bleed.
    • The cervix's purpose is to hold sperm and act as the uterus's gatekeeper.
    • The cervix is profoundly intelligent as it is a birthing organ and is most connected to the brain in the pelvic anatomy.
    • Some people may have difficulty in the highly sensitive area of the cervix feeling orgasmic initially.
    • One can expand their pleasure by embracing where they are, being curious, and loving what is present.
    • Check out free resources on Olivia Bryant's website - https://selfcervix.com/!
    • Olivia discusses the importance of first getting in touch with the cervix and learning to be present in the pelvis before beginning more advanced practices such as de-armoring and conditioning oneself to feel pleasure.
    • De-armoring is a process of exploring and feeling areas of numbness and pain, which helps to condition the tissue to receive safe touch.
    • Olivia tackles the importance of honoring the first current, which is the downward current of orgasm. This is necessary for orgasm to occur.
    • Understand that you have the right to empowered consent and that your voice deserves to be heard.
    • To experience pleasure during pregnancy and birth requires a safe and  private environment
    • People should touch their cervix before and during pregnancy, which can help create a more pleasurable birthing experience.
    • She also recommends practicing touch for pleasure throughout pregnancy and birth and suggests that people learn to make space and relax during sexual activity.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Contrary to what we've been told, the cervix is sensitive
    • When something is not spoken about, shame easily corresponds
    • Healing and opening to pleasure begin with addressing trauma
    • Celebrate and enjoy whatever is pleasurable for you
    • Stay curious about your own body and admire it
    • The cervix may be the most traumatized part of the body
    • Take ownership of your pleasure and experience
    • Receiving safe touch requires being relaxed
    • Healing from pain and gaining empowered consent are important
    • Realize that you have a voice, and it deserves to be heard
    • Touch your cervix, if you haven't already done so

    Tweetable Quotes:

"Your doctor will most likely say, 'Oh, your cervix is supposed to be numb,'... Actually, your cervix is profoundly sensitive. And it is most connected to the brain than any other part of your pelvic anatomy. And it makes sense, right? It's a birthing organ, it makes sense that it would be profoundly intelligent." - Olivia Bryant

"Whatever is pleasurable for you, celebrate it, embrace it." - Olivia Bryant

"The way to expand your pleasure, the way to grow in pleasure is to love where you're at, and embrace where you're at, and enjoy it completely. " - Olivia Bryant

  • ep. 16 - The Power of Words: Transforming Fear into Strength with Donna Tabas

Words are powerful - we hear this phrase often. Did you know that this is also applied at birth? In this episode, Debra welcomes Donna Tabas as they discuss how birthing can be a beautiful experience despite the challenges. Listen closely as Donna focuses on the terminologies during birth on what to be mindful of. Often, violent and hurtful words are used in the process, and these are not helpful in facilitating birth. The key is to use nutritive, gentle, and honored words; birth should be treated with utmost regard and respect.

Donna Tabas, CNM, MS, is a Columbia University-trained Certified Nurse Midwife who has been working with birthing families for 39 years, initially as a NICU nurse, then as an RN at a freestanding birth center with midwives, and finally, for the last 18 years as a midwife. Deeply affected by her own first birth experience that ended in a C/S, she went on to birth her second child with a VBAC, and her midwifery passion was born to help other women birth normally with strength and joy. She is committed to evidence-based care but is also aware that birth is deeply affected by issues of the head and heart as well. She is known as the "Science and Soul" midwife. She is now retired, enjoying her 3 grandchildren, completing her book on birthing and spirituality, and continuing to counsel women in their birthing journeys.

    In this episode:

    • Donna Tabas shares her experience of witnessing the childbirth of a dear friend on the seventh day of Passover, which was a miraculous birth due to her focus on thanking God during her surges.
    • Despite many sorrows and challenges, women can still feel the pleasures and joy in life and birthing.
    • Birth workers should work to help birthing parents understand that big, powerful sensations are normal and that they are not to be feared.
    • There is importance to the different connotations used to describe childbirth. Using words that promote a positive image can help to reduce fear and tension during labor.
    • People often use violent and hurtful words when talking about childbirth, which can be harmful to birthing women.
    • Using nutritive and gentle terms is the way to help make the birthing process respected and honored.
    • Having the baby "delivered" is said so many times in labor in hospitals - as if the mother was a container.

    Key Takeaways:

    • It is essential to address and release fear, especially in the moments before birth
    • Learn the ideologies behind fear to address it
    • Sensations are powerful in birth - listen to your body
    • The words people use during childbirth can impact the experience
    • Be wary of violent or hurtful words - use nurturing words instead

    Tweetable Quotes:

"Fear interrupts birth and interrupts the natural flow of birth… If there is fear in the room, help the woman address them…  transform  fear into strength and power." - Donna Tabas

"It's our job as birth workers to help a woman understand that these really big, powerful sensations are normal… We are strong women, we can do really big and powerful things, and that it's not to be feared." - Donna Tabas

"Pre-labor has its own beautiful function, and there's nothing false about it. And that needs to be honored. It's a real thing. " - Donna Tabas

  • ep. 15 - Doulas: The Missing Link in Maternity Care

What is a doula, and why is it essential to have one? In this episode, Debra shares her insights on the role of doulas in childbirth. When we look back historically, it is apparent that female companions during birth, now known as "doulas" were a significant part of the calm, connection and safety for birthing people. Doulas supported others prenatally, and during labor, birth and postpartum. .  Research shows  that  a doula plays an active role in helping to shorten labor, decrease cesarean births  and makes birth easier and more satisfying for both mother and baby. Doulas have many benefits for a woman during labor and postpartum, but there are not enough of them in the birthing space. Listen in as Debra discusses how doulas are the missing link in maternity care, and how they can help amplify the voice of the birthing people  facilitating informed decision making.

    In this episode:

    • Doulas offer emotional and physical support during labor and postpartum. Continuous support during labor is beneficial for both mother and baby.
    • Doulas are a valuable resource for pregnant women and new parents. They offer support, information and companionship to birthing people.
    • There are many benefits to having a doula during childbirth and postpartum, but not enough doulas are available in the space.
    • Although the medical model can provide benefits, without careful planning, birth often becomes more of a "medical emergency" or "procedure" instead of the honoring of the emotional, physical and spiritual process that birth holds.
    • Listen to episode 4 with Dr. Sarah Buckley to learn about childbirth hormones!
    • Doulas add to the privacy and comfort of childbirth. They make a difference in the outcomes for the birthing woman and her partner.
    • Visit https://www.dona.org/ for a guide on understanding the roles of a doula and how to find one.
    • Doulas are a missing link in maternity care, and as states and employers see the benefits for MotherBaby-Family, they are beginning to include these services in their benefits.  Doulas are recommended as a  part of global initiatives to provide Safe and Respectful Care such as the www.icichildbirth.org
    • Have you had a doula at birth? Tell us about your journey @orgasmicbirth!

    Key Takeaways:

    • Emotional support equals physical wellbeing
    • There is no risk in hiring a doula - it should be highly considered
    • Having a doula can help reduce fear, provide comfort and increases satisfaction in childbirth
    • Fear in labor will slow or stop labor
    • Doulas add to the privacy and the connection with your partner
    • Having a doula amplifies your voice to ensure you are heard and respected
    • Collaboration for birth is best for all - doulas add care

    Tweetable Quotes:

"With the transition to a medical model and hospitals, there have been benefits, but also much has been lost, including the roles, skills, and wisdom of support and companionship in birth and postpartum." - Debra Pascali Bonaro

"Fear in  labor is designed to slow or stop labor, so it will be longer and harder if the laboring woman does not feel private, safe, and unobserved." - Debra Pascali Bonaro

"Consider having a doula with the knowledge of comfort measures to help you make informed decisions by facilitating communication between you, your doctor, midwife, nurse, and care team. They'll help you to amplify your voice to ensure you're heard and respected and can benefit you, your partner, and your birth." - Debra Pascali Bonaro

  • ep. 13 - Oxytocin: The Hormone of Love, Birth, Bonding, and Breastfeeding with Dr. Sarah Buckley

How significant is the role of oxytocin in our bodies during labor and after birth? Dr. Sarah Buckley joined us in Episode 4 to talk about the hormones of Love, Sex and Childbirth. Today, Dr. Buckley is back to get in-depth on the roles of hormones when interventions are needed and on how to fill the hormonal gap in labor and after birth. Today is essential information to help you make informed decisions about induction and understand the differences between natural and synthetic oxytocin.

Dr. Sarah Buckley is trained as a GP (family physician) with qualifications in GP obstetrics. She has been writing and lecturing to childbirth professionals and parents since 1997 and is the author of the internationally best-selling book Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering. Sarah has a special interest in the hormones of physiological labor and birth and the impacts of interventions. In 2015 she completed an extensive report on this topic, Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing, published with Childbirth Connection (US). She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Queensland, researching oxytocin in labor and birth and the impacts of maternity-care interventions. She has co-authored several papers on oxytocin in labor, birth, and breastfeeding. Sarah is also the mother of four children, all born at home and now in their teenage years and beyond. She lives on the semi-rural outskirts of Brisbane.

    In this episode:

    • Hormones of labor and birth include oxytocin, which is responsible for contractions, pain relief, stress reduction, and reward and pleasure activation.
    • Oxytocin is released in the brain during labor and breastfeeding, and it helps reduce stress, and switch on dopamine receptors.
    • Interventions in childbirth can create hormonal gaps that impact sexual arousal, orgasm, and breastfeeding.
    • Having a birth companion, such as a midwife or doula, can help birthing moms feel safer and more secure.
    • Low doses of oxytocin infusions do not increase the mother's oxytocin levels much above what she would naturally produce in labor.
    • When doses get high, synthetic oxytocin could counteract the calming and natural pain relief, causing stress for the mother.
    • Hypoxia (low oxygen levels for the baby) is inevitable during labor and babies have evolved mechanisms to protect themselves.
    • Synthetic oxytocin can cause strong contractions to be closer together and compromise the baby's ability to cope.
    • The physiological onset of labor is a complex process that is influenced by many different factors, including hormones.
    • If labor is induced, the mother's readiness is not as high and she may need to use more stimulating methods to induce labor.
    • Epidurals can interfere with the hormones that are necessary for the onset of labor, leading to a slower or even stop in the process.
    • Skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding are important ways to fill in the gap.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Oxytocin, the well-known hormone of labor and birth, is susceptible to hormonal gaps
    • A private and safe space is needed to release oxytocin
    • Being in an unfamiliar place can make labor slow down
    • Labor is designed to overall be a positive experience
    • Be wary of synthetic oxytocin as it may disrupt hormonal balance
    • When the mother is not ready to induce labor, stimulating methods are needed
    • The hormonal gap needs to be filled after birth to help the mother and baby reconnect

    Tweetable Quotes:

"Labor is designed to overall be a positive experience." - Dr. Sarah Buckley

"Both skin-to-skin contact and suckling is the magic ingredient for the hour after birth, it's going to help both mother and baby to release oxytocin and reconnect." - Dr. Sarah Buckley

There are signals that pass between mother and baby that they are ready for labor, they are coordinated. Preparation for labor includes a dramatic increase in oxytocin receptors in the uterus. The mother's uterus becomes very sensitive to oxytocin in the lead up to labor so in her natural physiologic onset she doesn't need to produce much oxytocin to trigger contractions

but when being induced it's a different scenario you don't have that peak readiness

Did you know that sexual health is just like any other aspect of health? As sexual beings, it's important we understand and honor that sexuality is part of being human, and that there should be no shame is discussing, addressing, and caring for it. Pregnancy and postpartum introduces it's own pleasures, challenges, and differences, so let's take a look at how to maintain pleasurable sexual health throughout these stages.

In this episode, Dr. Rachel Rubin discusses the importance of good sexual health and how pleasure is essential for a healthy relationship. She also stresses the importance of communicating with your partner about your sexual needs in order to maintain a strong bond.

As children grow, Dr. Rubin recommends that parents discuss sexual health with them and provideinformation on how sex works biologically and psychologically. By understanding these matters, families can create a foundation for healthy sexuality, openness and safety.

Dr. Rachel Rubin is a board-certified urologist and sexual medicine specialist. She is an assistant clinical professor of Urology at Georgetown University and works in a private practice in the Washington DC region. She is one of only a handful of physicians fellowship trained in male and female sexual medicine. Dr. Rubin is a clinician, researcher, and vocal educator in the field of sexual medicine. • ep. 11 - Feel it to Heal From it: How to Reawaken Your Sexual Energy After Baby

Are you ready to prioritize your happiness and pleasure? In this episode, Debra shares the acronym P.L.E.A.S.U.R.E.S. and how these steps can deepen your connection to your body and sexuality. After birth, it is common for women to feel less sexy and desirable to themselves and others. Our birth story dramatically impacts how we think about ourselves, our self-esteem, our bodies, and our sexuality, so it becomes necessary to unpack and reflect on it. From there, we can take action, understand where we need healing, and embrace the new, sexy you!

    In this episode:

    • Have a moment to pause, breathe, and turn your frown upside down to invite the feel-good hormones.
    • Debra discusses her book, The Ultimate Guide to Sex After Baby, tackling how to navigate through relationships and sexuality.
    • Talking about sex and pleasure with friends can help to build support networks.
    • People feel less sexy after having a baby, which can impact their relationships and parenting.
    • Many factors can contribute to this decrease in sexual desire, including a lack of education about healthy sexuality.
    • To find balance in parenting, think about what words describe how you feel about being a parent.
    • Daily rituals can help reduce stress and create happiness. One example is brushing your hair for an extra minute.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Always listen to your body and prioritize your safety and comfort
    • Birth shouldn't strip away your dignity and sense of self
    • Don't let anyone take your peace and pleasure away
    • Parenting can be difficult, but there are resources available to help
    • There is a lot to unpack when reflecting on your birth story
    • Pregnancy is a time when healing is needed
    • Talking about sexual abuse during pregnancy can be helpful
    • Look in the mirror and see your beauty and appreciate your new body
    • Write down what gives you pleasure

    Tweetable Quotes:

"All birthing bodies take time to heal after birth. And everyone heals and is ready for intimacy and sex at different times and in different waves. So always listen to your body, prioritize your safety and comfort." - Debra Pascali Bonaro

"Don't let those old beliefs or lack of knowledge take your pleasure away… Don't let anyone take your peace and pleasure away." - Debra Pascali Bonaro

  • ep. 10 - Reclaiming Our Birth: Transmuting Painful Histories into Power with Piper Lovemore

Birth is a powerful experience that can help to heal barriers and open the door to more love and intimacy in life. It's time to reclaim the narrative of childbirth.

In this episode, we welcome Piper Lovemore to discuss the transformative power of childbirth. As a woman of color, she had to navigate a broken system that, inherently, treated her differently. Piper has moved from pain to power with purpose. From a troublesome history of racism in childbirth, to ensuring she and her family have the most vested interest in their health.  Piper shares why and how she created the births she desired and a family full of connection, communication and love.  Piper has been birthing her own children at home using empowered and intuitive free birth for the past six years. She has observed that each child brings a seed of wisdom that helps guide their journey into adulthood.

Piper Lovemore is an original Orgasmic Birth alum. Since birthing her first child in our documentary, she has gone on to welcome 6 more children, at home, via empowered, sovereign, and intuitive free births. Inspired by the concept of birth as a catalyst for personal growth and transformation, she has pursued a passion-driven career in the birth arts and supported hundreds of families as a birth educator, doula, and midwife.

    In this episode:

    • Piper Lovemore shares how each childbirth requires a type of mother need, teaching us different lessons about ourselves and the process of birthing.
    • The journey into motherhood is transformative for Piper, helping her grow in faith and trust in her body and abilities.
    • Piper shares her transformative power as a midwife, doula and educator and how she empowers others.
    • The experience of transmuting pain from a troublesome history into power is empowering.
    • Postpartum is a great opportunity to breathe life into the conversation and access healing.
    • Decide to center both your and your partner's truth together and uplift your beliefs.
    • Postpartum couples are more likely to encounter adjacent issues, such as hunger and fatigue.
    • Keeping an open line of communication and checking in on each other are important ways to show care and support.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Giving birth can be the most transformative and empowering aspect of life
    • Birthing should not be full of disempowerment and shame
    • Having a partner who is present and supportive is important
    • Do not assume to know - communicate openly with your partner
    • Self-care is more than bubble baths and candles - it can be simple and non-luxurious
    • Orgasmic Birth is definitely a gateway drug
    • Establish a channel of communication allows for authenticity and presence

    Tweetable Quotes:

"Black women were subject to a very troublesome history which helped me transmute pain into the type of  power that would  see me through my process .  I felt empowered by the notion that despite having lived in squalid conditions and the open disregard for the well-being of the mother and the baby, my ancestors were able to care for themselves and one another effectively enough for me to be here right now. This  told me that 1) birth works and 2) that I  and my family have the most vested interest in my own health and my child. ." - Piper Lovemore

"Having established that channel of [open] communication early allowed us [partners] to be authentic and present even in the spaces that are a little bit more challenging to navigate, and we can hold space for one another." - Piper Lovemore

"Create and protect a space to honor the intuition that they bring (baby) .  So much of the conversation centers on adult anxiety and medical management . These little beings come with a clear directive,  observe their  seeds of wisdom that present in such a tiny package.:

"Birth is not something to fear - but can be an empowering journey.:

"Birth as a celebration and ceremony. We have continued to embrace  our births in our family as a ceremony and celebration and very low on material trappings,  although that is often what we are fed is the appropriate way to prepare.   I  wanted to reach in and share some of my joy  and lend that  space to those experiencing stress who are not seeing birth positively reflected around them. Orgasmic Birth is definitely a gateway drug!
