Bob Kihara, Kenyan poet, writer, communicator, space enthusiast and environmentalist talks the future of Africa in space.
Speaker Bio:
Bob Kihara is a distinguished Kenyan poet, writer, communicator, space enthusiast, and environmentalist with over three decades of experience in journalism and media relations at both national and international levels. During his career, he served as a journalist at The East African Standard in Kenya, a Communication Officer at the United Nations, and a Press Officer at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Switzerland.
In his poetry, Bob Kihara seeks to foster connections between individuals of diverse backgrounds, emphasizing the power of poetry to address and bridge even the most challenging societal issues. His passion for space exploration reflects his belief in its potential to unite people worldwide, including those in Africa. Additionally, he is committed to noble leadership, social justice, and improving humanity.
Bob Kihara is an alumnus of Kenyatta University and the University of Nairobi School of Journalism, where he was awarded a scholarship by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany. He also holds a diploma from the International Institute of Journalism in Berlin. Beyond his impressive career, he has actively contributed to journalism organizations, holding leadership positions and receiving accolades for his reporting efforts. He is passionate about his poetry, environmentalism, reading, music, and sports, and he often retreats to the countryside to engage in tree-planting and agricultural activities on his farm.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Graham Lau is an astrobiologist and communicator of science. With an academic background spanning biology, chemistry, astrophysics, and geology, Dr. Lau is an expert on how living things effect the environment around them and how we search for alien life beyond the Earth. He’s conducted research in the Canadian High Arctic, has done x-ray spectroscopy at three different particle accelerators around the world, and is the Host of the NASA-funded livestream show called “Ask an Astrobiologist.”
Graham currently serves as the Director of Communications and Marketing for the non-profit Blue Marble Space, he’s a Research Scientist with the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, and he is also the Director of Logistics for the University Rover Challenge (an undergraduate robotics competition focused on Mars rovers). Graham has given public talks to classrooms and student groups from around the world, has been interviewed on various podcasts, and is known for his inspirational views on our place in the cosmos. Dr. Lau also serves as a meditation instructor and public speaking coach.

Professor Daniels received her PhD in 2002 from Cornell University and joined the faculty of North Carolina State University in 2005, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Her main research interests center around experiments on the non-equilibrium and nonlinear dynamics of granular materials, fluids, and gels. Several of these studies have used idealized systems to provide insight into biological, geological, and solar system phenomena, including in rubble pile asteroids.

Prior to forming LEOcloud, Dennis was the Chief Commercial Officer for Cloud Constellation Corporation where he had global responsibilities for sales, marketing, channel management, and strategic alliances.
With 35 years of experience in terrestrial, avionics and space-based technology, solutions and managed services, he has a track record of bringing emerging technologies to market for managed services working with global partners and service providers to introduce next generation solutions into their communications and cloud service offerings.
Dennis was recognized by Boeing with a Certificate of Achievement for his contributions and efforts on the Boeing 777 development program.
Mr. Gatens earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and his MBA from Radford University.

Dr. Cameron Smith is a professor at Portland State University where he teaches a wide variety of courses in human prehistory and evolution. Dr. Smith also designs and builds spacesuits at his company Pacific Spaceflight. He has a Doctorate in Archeology from Canada’s Simon Fraser University, and his research interests include Northwest Coast archaeology, evolution in general, cognitive evolution, usewear analysis and the adaptation of humanity. He has a Master’s in anthropology from Portland State, and a Bachelor’s from University of Durham.

Additionally, he has served as a coach in the strategic foresight MBA course at the NYU Stern School of Business. He has worked with clients from traditional publishing to large-scale internet platforms, to leading-edge programs in decentralization and space futures. He has been featured in the Journal of Futures Studies, IEEE, and was a 2015 team finalist for Fastco’s Innovation by Design Awards. He holds an MBA in Strategic Foresight from California College of the Arts and a BA in Art and Philosophy from Freed-Hardeman University.

Dr. Robert MacCurdy is an assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder where he leads the Matter Assembly Computation Lab (MACLab). He is developing new algorithms, materials, and fabrication tools to automatically design and manufacture electromechanical systems, with a focus on robotics. Rob did his PhD work with Hod Lipson at Cornell University and his postdoctoral work at MIT with Daniela Rus. He holds a B.A. in Physics from Ithaca College, a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, and an M.S. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.

Dr. Andy Aldrin is President of the Aldrin Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to harnessing the inspiration of space. Dr. Aldrin is also Program Chair and Founder of the Master of Space Operations program at Embry-Riddle University. Before moving into academia, Dr. Aldrin had a distinguished career in industry and government research, including executive positions at Boeing, United Launch Alliance and Moon Express. He serves on the board of several charitable organizations, including The Secure World Foundation, Sea Space Symposium, Space for Humanity, and the Tau Zero Foundation. Aldrin’s father, Buzz, walked on the Moon with Neil Armstrong.
Prof. Brian Kaplinger is an Assistant Professor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kansas. His research interests include astrodynamics, trajectory and mission design, and vision-based spacecraft guidance, navigation and control. Prof. Kaplinger has collaborated with both Dr. Aldrin and Buzz Aldrin on a number of research projects exploring Mars Cyclers, which we’ll get into much more detail about in a moment.
