As readers study the top three essays authored by Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove, Dr. Pim van Lommel and Dr. Leo Ruickbie, it will become apparent that there is a great variety of approaches that prove the case for survival of human consciousness after bodily death beyond a reasonable doubt.

One hundred percent of the responsibility for judging of the BICS essay contest lay in the hands of the six judges. There was no influence by either Robert Bigelow or Colm Kelleher on the judging process. The essays were chosen by majority rule with the central criterion being the cumulative evidence for Survival of Human Consciousness beyond permanent bodily death and beyond a reasonable doubt. Because of the very large number of excellent essays that BICS received (204), the judges spent over four months of very intensive work in meticulously evaluating, deliberating, arguing and eventually making their decisions.

Why were these essays chosen by the judges?
The winners were chosen based on the power of the arguments presented and on how persuasively the essays made the case for survival of human consciousness beyond a reasonable doubt. In reading these top three essays some members of the public may disagree that particular essays should have been included in the top three winning group. That opinion is to be expected. Every reader may resonate differently with these and other essays. While the judges were reading and re-reading the two hundred and four submitted essays, they were conscious of the great responsibility of choosing the top three. The judges chose these principal winners with exquisite care.

Chris Rutkowski 'Canada's UFOs: Declassified'.

Since 1947, the reality of UFOs has been hotly debated by enthusiasts, zealots, debunkers, and scientists. Skeptics insist that people who report UFOs are either mistaken or liars, whereas many true believers are convinced that aliens are visiting Earth and interacting with its inhabitants.

Recent years have seen a tonal shift in mainstream media coverage of UFOs following surprise admissions by the US Pentagon that it continues to investigate dramatic sighting reports from its personnel.

Canada has had its own UFO projects, too. Science writer Chris Rutkowski has viewed files on these studies, many of which were declassified from higher restrictions. These records demonstrate that many Canadians not only witnessed unusual objects in the sky (and on the ground) but that they overcame their fear of ridicule and possible legal persecution by reporting their remarkable sightings to the Canadian government. What’s more, many of the UFO reports were made by military personnel, and many continue to defy conventional explanation.

Journey with Rutkowski on a guided tour of the UFO files contained within Library and Archives Canada (LAC), detailing a selection of historical reports that illustrate the kinds of objects witnessed by Canadians between 1947 and 1980, the period covered by LAC’s current digitization.

These documents offer insight into how the Canadian government went about studying UFOs, how it dealt with witnesses, and what it told the public.

This week I'm reading from are the book 'Living In Two worlds' by Lisa Savoy and Sharon Hewett Rawlett's BICS prize winning essay 'Beyond Death: The Best Evidence for the Survival of Human Consciousness'.

Does consciousness continue after death? For 150 years, scientists, doctors, and other highly qualified investigators have carefully collected evidence in hopes of answering this question. In this award-winning essay, Sharon Hewitt Rawlette analyzes the best of that evidence to date.

Starting with third-person phenomena such as after-death apparitions, mediumship, and telephone calls from the dead and moving on to first-person phenomena like near-death experiences, memories of previous lives, and memories of the period between lives, Rawlette lays out the vast landscape of evidence for life beyond the grave. She argues that extensive cross-validation between first- and third-person evidence cripples the strongest skeptical arguments brought against each type considered alone. Ultimately, she concludes that the survival of consciousness is the best explanation for the evidence taken as a whole and considers what implications this has for our understanding of the world we live in, even while we are still on this side of death.

Both readable and rigorous, Beyond Death is a fascinating distillation of a century and a half of afterlife research.

I was always ‘sensitive’, ever since childhood, but when my Grandmother passed away when I was 17, my mediumship began to open up. She came to me in dreams and told me things that would later come true.

When my own loved ones began coming to me, other people’s loved ones did as well. I found work as a medium (or work as a medium found me!) straight out of school, and I’ve been transmitting evidential messages from spirit to their living loved ones ever since.

To date I have conducted 15,000+ sittings and public demonstrations globally, and I have demonstrated my mediumship for the Scottish Society for Psychical Research, under the scrutiny of sceptics and scientists.

In 2015 I graduated with honors from University of Glasgow where I studied English Literature and Philosophy, specializing in consciousness studies.

Philip Mantle
'UFO Landings UK'

British UFO researcher Philip Mantle began his active involvement in ufology in 1980 when he joined the newly formed Yorkshire UFO Society. One of the first UFO cases that he investigated was that of a landing case in the West Yorkshire town of Normanton in England. This incident took place only a few miles from where he lived. The case in question was to do two things, the first was to confirm that he was not wasting his time investigating this phenomenon, and the second was to give him a lifelong interest in both UFOs and in particular UFO landing cases.This book looks at UFO landing cases in the UK only (with the addition of the Republic of Ireland) beginning long before the modern era of UFOs began in 1947 right the way through to today. Case histories are separated into decades and come complete with photographs, documents, artwork and much more. The case histories featured in this book are looked at for their ‘high strangeness’ value.

The late Dr. J. Allen Hynek, the man who invented the phrase ‘close encounters’ suggested long ago that an area of research to concentrate on were the cases which were up close and personal, in others words UFO landing accounts. Dr. Hynek argued that the greater the degree of high strangeness the less likely it was that the UFO case in question could be explained away in conventional terms. As UFO researchers we know that most UFO sightings reported have a conventional explanation and at the end of the day there remains only a few that seem to remain ‘unidentified’. The author argues that the closer the witnesses are to these UFO landings then the less likely they are to have a rational explanation. The high strangeness factor increases in a number of ways, the length of time the UFO is in view, how close the witness was to it, more than one witness being involved and so on.

The case histories featured in this book come from some of the authors own investigations along with other UFO researchers, UFO groups, publications and of course UFO books. At no point in this book does the author argue that any one specific theory is better placed to explain these cases than any other. The readers are left to make up their own mind in this respect. Instead, and in keeping with the theme of the book the author has obtained comments from a significant number of his colleagues around the UK and the Republic of Ireland. A wide variety of opinions on the nature and origin of UFO landing accounts are featured in full and unedited providing a fascinating outlook from the British UFO research community. There are many fascinating and bizarre UFO landing cases featured in this book all of which have confirmed, like they did in 1980, that the author is not wasting his time investigating this phenomenon which he has done now for over forty years.

Philip Mantle is an international UFO researcher, lecturer and broadcaster. His books have been published in six different languages around the world.

He is the former Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association and former MUFON representative for England. Philip has written articles and features for numerous publications around the world and has been both editor and assistant editor of high street UFO publications. He is the founder of FLYING DISK PRESS and works from his home in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
