When we think of warriors in Ifá, we often think of Ogun, Shango, and Ochosi. But what about the powerful female Orishas who fought battles, commanded spiritual forces, protected their children, and demonstrated extraordinary strength?
Welcome back to OUR ROOTS with Joseph Baba Ifa, where Only the Strongest Roots See the Light.
In this episode, we're exploring THE WARRIOR WOMEN OF IFÁ, uncovering the fierce, protective, and often misunderstood aspects of the female Orishas in Yoruba, Ifá, and Lucumí traditions.
We know Oshún for her beauty and sweetness, Yemayá for her nurturing and maternal energy, Oyá for her storms and transformation, and Obá for her loyalty and devotion. But their stories reveal much more than these familiar qualities.
These are not simply stories of love, motherhood, and compassion. They are also stories of power, conflict, sacrifice, courage, wisdom, and survival.
Joseph Baba Ifa takes us deeper into the patakíes, exploring the battles, rivalries, relationships, and spiritual lessons associated with these remarkable female Orishas.
Can a female Orisha be more powerful than a male Orisha? Have female Orishas gone to war against one another? Can Oshún conquer without using physical force? What happens when Yemayá becomes angry? And why is Oyá considered one of the fiercest warriors?
We're challenging the misconception that femininity and warrior strength cannot coexist.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE EXPLORE:
Oyá: The fierce warrior associated with storms, winds, transformation, and the cemetery gates
Yemayá: The powerful mother whose protective nature should never be mistaken for weakness
Oshún: Beauty, intelligence, strategy, and the power of persuasion
Obá Nani: Loyalty, sacrifice, resilience, and her often-overlooked warrior qualities
Yewá and Naná Burukú: Lesser-discussed expressions of feminine spiritual authority
The differences between male and female warrior Orishas
Patakíes involving battles, rivalries, jealousy, and betrayal
How the female Orishas demonstrate strength, leadership, and wisdom
The symbolism of weapons, natural forces, and spiritual protection
Why some female Orishas are misunderstood
What the stories of the Orishas teach us about human relationships
The importance of understanding different traditions and lineages
ARE THE FEMALE ORISHAS MORE POWERFUL THAN WE REALIZE?
Which female Orisha do you believe has the most fascinating warrior stories?
Is there a pataki involving Oyá, Oshún, Yemayá, or Obá that changed your understanding of their power?
Do you believe people sometimes underestimate the female Orishas because of how they're traditionally portrayed?

From Watts / Grape St, South Central LA to Las Vegas to the U.S. Navy to Ifá — Ahmal shares his powerful story of anger, survival, spiritual cleansing, and becoming a therapist. As a child nicknamed “Mad Mo” for his temper, Ahmal never understood why he blacked out with anger until Ifá revealed he is a son of Ogun. After turbulent first years in the Navy, a reading revealed a shadow / spirit placed on him before birth aimed at his mother — and a cleansing + spiritual bath with his godparents changed his intuition and life forever. Now an Ifá-centered mental health therapist, Ahmal bridges Ogun, Esu, Ori, and modern therapy to help our community heal.
What does Ifá teach about death, and is the day we die already written? In this episode of Our Roots, Joseph Baba Ifa explores Ikú, the spiritual understanding of death, and some of the questions people are often afraid to ask. Can divination reveal that someone’s life is in danger? Can ebó help prevent premature death? What happens to our Ori when we die, and does everyone become an ancestor? We also get into reincarnation, funeral rites, the relationship between destiny and free will, and the difference between honoring the dead and understanding the ancestral realm. This is not a conversation about predicting anyone’s death. It’s an opportunity to understand how Ifá approaches mortality, spiritual responsibility, and the choices we make while we’re here. And perhaps the most important question of all: If death is unavoidable, what does Ifá teach us about how to live?Join Joseph for a thoughtful conversation about life, legacy, ancestors, and the journey beyond this world. Our Roots: Only the Strongest Roots See the Light.#Ifa #Iku #OurRootsPodcast #AfricanSpirituality #Orisha #Babalawo #Ancestors #OduIfa #AfricanTraditionalReligion

Our Roots Podcast — Exploring Ifá, Orisha, Lukumí, and our ancestral traditions.
There is a lot of information about Ifá and Orisha tradition online, but how much of it is actually true?
In this episode of Our Roots, Joseph Baba Ifa takes on some of the biggest misconceptions surrounding Ifá, the Hand of Ifá, Orishas, divination, ebó, initiation and African Traditional Religion as a whole.
Does receiving your Hand of Ifá make you a Babalawo? Can you choose your Orisha? Is Ifá witchcraft? Does every ebó involve animal sacrifice? Is your Odu basically a prediction of your future? Are Eshu and Elegua the devil? And if two Babalawos practice differently, does that mean one of them is wrong?
We also get into something that doesn't get talked about enough: **misinformation inside the religion itself.** Social media has made Ifá more visible than ever, but it has also created a world where patakíes, rituals, "signs," Orisha information and spiritual advice can be shared without context, lineage or proper understanding.
Joseph breaks down what the Hand of Ifá actually means, the importance of Ori and good character, the role of ebó, the difference between guidance and fortune-telling, and why receiving ceremonies doesn't automatically make someone more knowledgeable or spiritually powerful.
Whether you're brand new to Ifá, recently received your Hand of Ifá, have practiced for years, or you're simply curious about African spirituality, this conversation may challenge some of what you've heard.
