Shout out to the class of 2006: TWENTY years ago right now you were prepping up for your freshman year of high school! Maria and Tawny recount their high school memories and it’s safe to say they had very different paths. Next, Maria outlines the Kendrick Johnson documentary (Finding Kendrick Johnson; Starz) and breaks down all the horrific details that prove this case was mishandled. Have you ever lost track of your child for a second and felt the whole world stop?! Same. Tawny and Maria talk about how to better spot your kids and what to keep an eye on in an emergency. The education system expecting all children to be the same is forever frustrating; the women talk about some of the things they wish they would’ve learned & what’s still missing from the classroom. They finish up with some discussion about splitting the bill, paying as much as your coupled friends and how awkward gift giving can be.
TRIGGER WARNING
The Kendrick Johnson documentary is very graphic and this podcast episode goes into detail about the forensic photos.
A debate with a male friend has Tawny questioning people’s logic and once again wondering how we can pretend there aren’t imbalances in the world. She opens up about the first time she ever had to visit sex crimes and what it felt like to be shamed for being a victim. Maria talks about how her self-esteem affected her ability to learn and the women try to figure out how we can help our children be more confident. Team sports are a great way to help your child’s development, but can your behavior as a sports parent tear them down? Tawny and Maria revisit their experience with sports and what it was like to be forced to do things you didn’t want to do (and eat things you didn’t want to eat) as a child. Floored by a school district in Missouri allowing corporal punishment in the classroom the women discuss how they feel about spanking and why they think force from adults is just another show of control. Student Loan debt is being forgiven! For Tawny, this is cause for celebration, but not everyone is happy; Tawny and Maria discuss why they think this is a win and explore some of the trouble that comes from the way the FASFA works.
Maria has visited alllll the doctors lately to make sure her cancer is staying the F away, but the meds helping her fight it have thrown her a curveball. She fills us in on what’s next and the women discuss the importance of having a team when it comes to your health. Getting proper healthcare and finding the right doctors is really hard; and it’s even harder when the statistics are against you. The women touch on Aftershock (Hulu) and the devastating costs of Black women’s pain being ignored. Andrew Tate has been officially banned from Instagram! Tawny delivers the good news to Maria and they talk about why Tate is so dangerous and how easy it is for negativity to spread. What’s worst than a male misogynist? Yup, you know it: a female misogynist. Tawny and Maria call out the newest traitor they’ve come across and explore some of the things she had to say about fat women not being worthy of love. Has our obsession with physical appearance locked us into shitty relationships? The women explore how society has skewed our view of what type of attraction is important and Tawny talks about how her body image struggles affected the way she viewed love.

Tawny and Maria talk about their struggles with memory and how much of it they think is contributed to the constant distractions around us. Jennette McCurdy is an actress who found fame as a child while being abused by her extremely toxic mother and she recently released a book titled I’m Glad My Mom Died. Tawny & Maria discuss the matter of fact title and the importance of holding shitty people accountable. As a mother and daughter pair themselves, the women talk about the jealousy and competition that can exist in mother/daughter relationships and take a look at how it may have popped up in their own lives. Tawny shares some gossip about a popular Instagram page which opens up conversations about entitlement, popular baby names and how to teach your kids boundaries. With social media being a go-to way to make money, it is not uncommon for people to get their children in on the action. At what point are children being exploited and denied consent? How do we protect our own children and those that work in show business?

*For some reason this episode is showing to be an hour and half in length, but is really only one hour. Weird glitch that had me going crazy in post! Hope nothing weird is left behind 😝
Since they finished episodes 1 & 2 before pressing record Tawny and Maria talk about Trainwreck; the latest Netflix documentary. Trainwreck focuses on Woodstock ‘99 and how the reality of the event strayed very, very far from what was supposedly intended. A recent encounter on Tinder has Tawny sick of men (again) and she dives into an old saying that triggers her. Maria works in a male-dominated world and she is the boss of many of them; she talks about the impact of being the only woman in a department and what it was like to take a “man’s role”. Next, they re-explore the Monica Lewinsky/Clinton scandal and discuss how crazy they think it is that people see Monica as a villain. Tawny and Maria also share their thoughts about women being against women, the importance of filing for custody of your children and the aspects of domestic violence not even considered when banning abortion.

Tawny and Maria use this episode for some old fashioned bitching! Not really, but kind of. They start off talking about a social experiment Maria found on Tik Tok which opens up the topic of what's appropriate behavior when you have a blended family. Have you ever had your birthday shine taken away from you? Tawny talks about the importance of not sharing everything. Maria questions why it is so tough for people to take accountability for their actions and where lack of awareness stems from. Tawny opens up about the different ways her anxiety manifests and how she even realized what it was. Since women seem to be blamed for a lot (even things they have nothing to do with), the ladies debate why women are expected to own up to things while being encouraged to pardon men. Tawny asks Maria what has been annoying her lately and the ladies run through some frustrating topics including Roe v. Wade, Pick-Me Women and the dangerous ass conspiracy theorist flooding the media.
This week, Tawny's long-time friend Holly stopped by to Overshare! In addition to taking a trip down memory lane; they open up about the way friendship dynamics change and how they lost & found each other again. As a teacher who believes in inclusion and teaching on the child's level: Holly has had many experiences that make her job feel really defeating. She shares how she manages it all and reminds us exactly why teachers are such badasses. Although Holly always knew she wanted to be a mother, her path there was a traumatic one. She candidly recounts her struggles with infertility, how the process affected her marriage and what it was like giving birth prematurely to a baby who needed NICU care.

This week's topics were inspired by all of the reality TV Tawny has her and Maria sucked into. The return of I Love A Mama's Boy (TLC) brings up a lot of interesting in-law dynamics. Maria explores her relationship with her in-laws and why choosing your battles is important. Why is it that we seem to prepare our sons and daughters differently for the world? Maria talks about the way she loved her children differently and how she feels about it now. Discovery Plus released a new show called Generation Drag that explores children who are making their debut as Drag Queens. Maria was especially touched by the premise and the women discuss the effect the show had on each of them. Seeking Sister Wives has also returned and brings up the conversation of some of Tawny's favorite topics: many wives, polyamory and cults! How does a man with many wives and even more children make himself available to everyone? Dating is hard; especially with the way times have changed. How do you know if someone is being honest with you? What traits are excusable and which are deal breakers? Tawny and Maria try to figure it out (spoiler alert: it's the blind leading the blind)!
Edit: I now know the Bachelor in question was named Colton, not Clayton. Oops. Message still counts!!!
