On this episode, my guest Cat Moore and I talk about the importance of holding space for one another.

Cat is a TEDx + Motivational Speaker, a Consultant, an Innovator, a Mom... and the Director of Belonging at the University of Southern California. 

She has held thousands of conversations with people; on the streets, in coffee shops, universities, corporations and even NASA... and Me.

Cat is raising awareness about the importance of holding space for one another. Treating people like Human Beings.

As a leader in corporate, I specifically engage Cat about the workplace.  

- The interview; making sure the we (the employer) will be a good fit for you, so you can be your whole-self... sharing your ideas and energy with the group, in a way that adds value.

- "How Can I Help?" is a question we should all be asking, especially as a leader. (servant leadership)

- C.L.I.C.K. : a method of approaching authentic relationships. CONNECTING with others as we are, where we are. LISTENING first, to understand what is needed.  INVESTINGATING without judgment. COMMUNICATE with kindness. KEEPING in touch from a place of commitment with on another.

- Teaching people to "Interview your next employer", making sure they will be a good fit for you... so you can show up as your whole self and contribute to the group / team, as you are.  Everyone benefits when the environment is diverse and embraces inclusiveness.  

- Holding space for one another.  We are all human beings.

- Think Tiny, Think Little, Think Simple - "it's often in the tiny interactions that a lot of potency can start to change not just individual's lives, but the workplace culture"

- Anytime you put the word "just" before something, it could be a tiny seed moment that could impact someone's life.

Having every opportunity in life, Damon made some bad decisions, getting caught up in drugs and criminal activity which landed him in a Texas maximum security prison, sentenced to 65 years. After 7 years and 3 months he was released on Nov 16, 2015... on parole until 2073.

While in prison he adopted the "Be A Coffee Bean" mantra from a man named Mr. Jackson, which is about affecting a negative environment in a positive way.... and not letting the negative environment infect you.

 "The Coffee Bean Life Lessons" that Damon talks about:

1. Every Day, Work out in 3 areas: Physically, Mentally & Spiritually

2. There are only 4 things that you can control: What You Think, What You Feel, What You Say...and What You Do. (that's it)

I was recently made aware of ”Toxic Positivity”…. as such that, for someone living with depression can feel even more isolated when people try to tell them “it will be ok”… “you will get over this”…. “Life happens for you you”. Yes, I believe all of that…. Power of the Mind stuff… However, when you live in a dark place of depression, it is extremely difficult to think this way. If you know someone living with depression, just be there for them and validate their experience. Just listen. They may not be ready to “problem solve”. They just want to be heard. They just want to know that what they are going through is real… and they want to be acknowledged. This is their journey. Don’t try to help them with solutions. (Not yet)….Just show up, meet them where they are. Love them, acknowledge them, be there for them. I hope you find this helpful. If you want to know more, consult a professional. Every moment we have, we are either taking in energy (experiencing) or putting out energy (influencing). We have control over that energy. Whether we are Experiencing or Influencing… there are one of three areas that will be effected in our moments. Ourselves, the Environment, or other People. And…. There are 4 actions of energy exchanged, that I believe, we can control, wether it’s experience or influence. (Internally) 1. The energy of THOUGHT. We can control what we think… what we tell ourselves and how we filter our experience. 2. The energy of EMOTION. We can control how we feel… our perception of our experience, in a situation… and not the situation, itself. (Externally) 3. The energy of SPEACH. We can control what we say. The words that we chose to speak, are our words. 4. The energy of ACTION. We can control what we do. The physical actions we take and the things we do, are our actions. We choose to (or not to) do them. The important part here…. is to have KINDNESS as the key element. This is positive for you internally and externally. When you show up in the world with Kindness, have awareness of this process and start to practice it… your world and the world around you will become a better place. Maxwell Ishmail and I worked together for the 3 years I lived in Denver, Colorado from 2010 to 2013. I invited Max on the show as my guest, for a few reasons.   

"Thank you, Max", for nudging me to start the podcast.... for putting the idea in my head. 

Maxwell's energy is.... "life giving"... he's always bringing people together. 

Max (a union employee) joined me, in Management (non-union)... and we built bridges and tore down the wall that had been up for more than 30 years, between the two sides.  It was the biggest metaphorical mountain that I've ever had to climb, in my career.  But we did the unthinkable.  We killed an extreme toxic culture, with kindness....with heart centered leadership... heart influence. 

Being Mindful and feeding your Mind with Healthy Content is just as important as what you fee your body.

Slowing down and making time for yourself is important... you can't give what you don't have.

This is my first podcast recording in 2022.

Up until recently, I've been fairly consistent and doing one a week.  However, for the past 3 to 4 weeks, I've been reflecting on my journey in 2021.... all the amazing people I've interviewed... my podcast statistics...  and taking time to pause.... and appreciate the relationships that have come into my life. I truly am blessed.

I believe that it's important to take time... to reflect... and to look at what you've done, what you've learned, how far you've come.... and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small.  Be proud of where you are at today... and the experiences you've had, to get here (even the tough ones). :-)

Have the courage to keep going. Don't stop,  Don't give up...  and...don't compare yourself to others.  It's about you, your journey, your growth, your development.

If you feel like things aren't going well, self reflect before trying to move forward. Give yourself grace. We are all Whole Beings... on our own journey.  We all go through these seasons in life.  It's the natural order of learning and growing. Believe in yourself.

So... today...this is my reflection.
